Posted September 5, 201212 yr These were taken outside of Rapid City: Deadwood, final resting place of Wild Bill Hickok, namesake for the poker hand known as "dead man's hand", aces and eights, supposedly what he was holding when he was killed. Deadwood was an awesome show on HBO by the way. Is that a swastika? Items left at the gravesite - jack daniels bottles, money, cigarettes, a bullet At Mt. Rushmore late in the day with the sun setting behind. I guess the time to go is in the morning when the sun is facing the monument.
September 5, 201212 yr I visited Deadwood around 1981 & again around 2008. The difference was amazing. I think I liked the old version better. Did you visit Scenic?
September 5, 201212 yr No - I didn't see Scenic. Was the 1981 version less touristy? Is that why you prefer it?
September 5, 201212 yr I was curious about the swastika as well, so I did a quick google search. According to the two sites I went to, it's a native american symbol for good luck. The arms bend to the left, vs. the traditional swastika where they bend to the right. I guess that would be an important distinction if you're trying to be a tourist destination.
September 6, 201212 yr Awesome! "You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers
September 7, 201212 yr the "swastika" is also called a fylfot cross. It's got occult meaning out the wazoo. yeah, Deadwood was a tourist place but small time. The bar where Bill got shot was one floor & when I was there a passed out biker was AOK. Now they serve seafood & stuff. WTF? Scenic is a teeny tiny "town" on the edge of the Badlands S of Rapid and, if you see it, you will see some outdoor jail cells. They were made in Cleveland.
September 7, 201212 yr I visited Deadwood around 1981 & again around 2008. The difference was amazing. I think I liked the old version better. Deadwood was one of the three original Main Street communities (Galena, IL and Madison, IN being the other two (and fantastic towns)). I have heard the place has changed since the 1970's/80's revitalization, with so many buildings housing casinos. I was just out at Mt. Rushmore a couple weeks back and truely enjoyed Rapid City. Although it is in the middle of a very touristy area, it balances being a place for tourism and a city in itself pretty well.
September 7, 201212 yr i dont think i'd ever visit this particular place, but its interesting to see and i do love those wide open spaces of the first photos.
September 8, 201212 yr Scenic is a teeny tiny "town" on the edge of the Badlands S of Rapid and, if you see it, you will see some outdoor jail cells. They were made in Cleveland. I knew I could find picture somewhere Scenic
