September 5, 201212 yr While I wouldn't call it "America's most beautiful city," it's certainly one of its most special. "You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers
September 6, 201212 yr Nice! Oh, but can't they do something about all those trees blocking the buildings? Other cities bury them underground so that they don't get in the way, maybe Savannah should try that. Also, ColDayMan thinks Toledo is America's most beautiful city.
September 6, 201212 yr Truly a beautiful city, and you did it justice. Haven't been there in 15 years, and I miss it.
September 6, 201212 yr I agree it's America's most beautiful city. I think it would be a blast to live there- great food, perfect weather, good nightlife, nice people, big beaches, etc. I've always loved Savannah.
September 6, 201212 yr Truly does look like a place with a lot of secrets. Tons of character. I'm always in awe when I see an older city that's well kept and still intact like this.
September 6, 201212 yr shelbyville for you eh? so charleston? Not Charleston either. I prefer Savannah over Charleston. "You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers
September 6, 201212 yr As a former resident of Savannah and current Ohioan, if you want to call it the most beautiful go ahead, but I'll continue to keep the opinion that Savannah is a steaming pile of crap that just happens to have one of the most beautiful neighborhoods in the country at its core. Calling Savannah beautiful because the old town is pretty is about as logical as calling Cleveland ugly because Glenville run down.
September 6, 201212 yr ^In general, I agree. The old core of Savannah is a stunner but the rest of the city might as well be inner-ring Augusta (GA). It'd be different if it would take up the majority of the city limits but it doesn't. Boston, for example, has a world-class core but I would hesitate to call the city "beautiful" as the majority of Boston is, well, Dorchester, Roxbury, East Boston, etc. In reality, you aren't going to get a "most beautiful city" (even San Francisco has its Hunters Points and Outer Richmonds) unless you have such a spectacular setting or small city limits (re: Paris). But I still much prefer Savannah over Charleston. "You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers
September 7, 201212 yr But other people apparently pick "the most beautiful shirt" with no other options ;). "You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers
September 7, 201212 yr well if not the topic, you can use the verb "pick" in your reply at least, so thats something.
September 7, 201212 yr Uh huh. And you're welcome boosting up your thread ;). "You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers
September 7, 201212 yr you are a booster! i've boosted a few things myself...but it was during that blackout.
September 7, 201212 yr Savannah is certainly on my list of places to visit, although I do have the impression that it's a VERY nice historic district surrounded by ghetto. But I still much prefer Savannah over Charleston. I'm kind of curious why someone would prefer Savannah to Charleston? I have not been to either one, but my impression is that Charleston is the larger and more active city with some nice beaches near by.
September 7, 201212 yr Savannah is very special. I highly recommend visiting St. Bonaventure Cemetery. Thanks for the tour.
September 8, 201212 yr I'm kind of curious why someone would prefer Savannah to Charleston? I have not been to either one, but my impression is that Charleston is the larger and more active city with some nice beaches near by. I was always under the impression that Savannah was a nicer city (the core at least) whereas Charleston was a little more touristy. I've only ever been to Savannah, though (3 times), but my wife has been to each once, and liked Savannah better.
September 10, 201212 yr Savannah is certainly on my list of places to visit, although I do have the impression that it's a VERY nice historic district surrounded by ghetto. But I still much prefer Savannah over Charleston. I'm kind of curious why someone would prefer Savannah to Charleston? I have not been to either one, but my impression is that Charleston is the larger and more active city with some nice beaches near by. I dig the vibe, the squares, the food, the people, the scene, and well, everything better about Savannah than Charleston. September 10, 201212 yr ^I agree on this. I'll admit Savannah does have a fair amount of ghetto and crappy areas in the city limits, but something about the people there makes me like it more than most other parts of the coastal south (it's not just the historic district and squares). I think Savannah is a lot of fun, but that could be because I've been to St. Patrick's Day on River Street, which is sort of like an Athens Halloween stretched on twice as many blocks (best St. Patrick's in the country IMO due to the perfect weather). I also love Tybee Island, more so than Hilton Head. There are a whole slew of things I dig about Savannah...just a great city in a great location. I'm kind of curious why someone would prefer Savannah to Charleston? I have not been to either one, but my impression is that Charleston is the larger and more active city with some nice beaches near by. Good beaches are close to both of them, but Hilton Head is much closer to Savannah. Savannah also has Tybee Island, which is icing on the cake. Tybee Island is one of the south's best kept secrets. It has a big beach with an awesome lighthouse, but not a ton of crappy condo developments like you'd expect. It still has the feel of a small, local beach town, and is generally not overcrowded. Tybee Island is what seals it for Savannah. Savannah is one of those places that shouldn't be judged solely by the city. The metro area offers a ton of stuff to do, especially when you consider how small it is (140,000 in the city, 350,000 in the MSA). In terms of urban core/pre-WW2, I think Savannah and Charleston are pretty similar in size.
