The 2012 NHL Lockout has officially caused the cancellation of all regular season games until October 25th (though likely longer). Players and owners cannot agree to a CBA. NHL Commissioner, Gary Bettman, is now presiding over his third lockout since taking over as commissioner in 1993.

PS: How is there not an NHL thread yet?

Islanders to move to Brooklyn in 2015

The hockey puck stops here -- in Brooklyn!

The Islanders are moving to Barclays Center in fall 2015, after signing a 25-year lease with the new Brooklyn arena and agreeing to relocate several slap shots west from their current Uniondale, LI, home.

"Go Brooklyn, go Islanders!" Mayor Bloomberg said today during the big announcement.

The team, which won four consecutive Stanley Cups between 1980 and 1983, will remain the New York Islanders at the insistence of NHL officials. Arena managers, eager to score a second major tenant for Barclays, owner Charles Wang and borough leaders had no problems with that demand.

^ I'm happy to hear about that the Islanders will move to Brooklyn, remain on Long Island (technically) and in a great arena by what I have hear. The only good news out of the NHL since the Kings won the Stanley Cup last year.

I, personally, could care less if there's a season this year. I'm tired of the stupid antics of some of the owners and (especially) the players and the commissioner.

an interesting factoid is barclays will be the smallest capacity arena, below winnipeg, but could be expanded to 15k max eventually.

Interesting news about the Islanders moving into Brooklyn's Barclays Center.  And unlike the New Jersey Nets, they won't be changing their name!

In non-interesting NHL news - in fact downright depressing news - the lockout plods along.  The NHL cancelled all November games.  Which kills any chance at a full 82-game season.  Next up for cancellation is the Winter Classic outdoor game.  It was scheduled for New Year's Day in Michigan Stadium.  It might get the ax next week because of a deal between the NHL and UM that requires payment of a non-refundable fee for use of the stadium.

More information and updates at the SBNation - NHL lockout 2012 storystream

If the lockout continues, next up for cancellation are the December games, the January games and then the January 27, 2013 All-Star Game.  Which, by the way, is in Columbus this season!  I've already posted in the Blue Jackets thread why a long lockout and/or cancelled season might be likely.  I'd post a frowning emoticon here but there isn't one big enough!

I almost have to question the league's future at this point.  What's this, four lockouts in two decades?  How come other major professional sports leagues seem to be able to have more long-term labor stability?

because other leagues make more money.

Im not sure how they will come back from this. Advertisers can't be happy at all.

i wonder what happen to the nassau coliseum aka the slightly older, smaller and crummier cousin of the richfield coliseum?

seems like just yesterday there were plans to redevelop it and the surrounding area, including building a 60 story 'lighthouse' tower!

I really think the league needs to get out of the sunbelt.  retract and work from a core that actually makes money.

The lockout grinds along.  Half of December's games and the All-Star Game (which was in Columbus) get the ax.

ProHockeyTalk: NHL cancels All-Star Game, schedule through Dec. 14

Crap, well that stinks.  I don't know how the NHL can possibly make this up to Columbus.  How far in advance are these games scheduled?  Probably at least half a decade before the league can promise another All-Star Game to the Jackets.

^It likely won't be as bad as that for Columbus and the All-Star Game.  If the NHL follows its past pattern, Columbus would likely get the next available All-Star Game in 2015.  There won't be one in 2014 because of the Winter Olympics.

+1 for that. but also from a quality point of view. there is just not that much talent for a way overexpanded league like the nhl. thats why i lost interest in the pros. i will say i've been to a handful of rangers games and its a good time the fans are fun, so i like it as a sports event, but as far as interest in the game itself i stick to the college game.

More and more it looks like this season is over.

Has "h-e-double hockey sticks" frozen over?  Maybe it has.  The NHL ownership and players came to what they are calling a "tentative agreement" to end this season's lockout.

It's not final because the full ownership and players still to vote on it.  But the leadership of both sides seems to think they have a deal that will be approved.  If approved, other details for a shorted season would still need to be worked out - like scheduling and season length.  According to the ESPN source linked below, a 50-game season could start January 15, or a 48-game season could start January 19.

ESPN: NHL, union have tentative agreement

^ So far, so good.  The owners unanimously approved the new CBA yesterday.  Now it goes to the players for a vote on Friday and Saturday.

The NHL players ratified the new CBA, so the new 2012/2013 season is officially a go!

The NHL's shortened 2013 season generally follows the pattern of last year's abbreviated NBA season.  Instead of an 82-game marathon, it will a 48-game sprint.  One interesting twist is that teams will only play teams within their own conference.  So, the only time an Eastern Conference team and Western Conference team will face each other this year, will be in the Stanley Cup Finals.

Games start this Saturday, January 19.  Instead of the regular season ending at its customary first week of April, it will finish up in the last week of April.

  • 2 weeks later...

After the NHL screwed hockey fans for the second time in eight years, there was justifiable concern if they would return when this season started up last Saturday.  The answer to if fans would return - at least for week one - is an overwhelming yes.  Below are a bunch of links to TV ratings articles from SB Nation that track rating over this past week:

Saturday (1/19) Opening Game Ratings: NBC scores best hockey ratings since 2002, local numbers huge

Saturday, Monday, Tuesday Ratings: Saturday's regional coverage draws best NHL numbers since 1999

Wednesday Ratings: NBC Sports Network sets all-time ratings record for Bruins vs. Rangers

Thursday Ratings: TSN hits four-year high, local ratings continue to roll

Go Avs! Nice back-to-back home wins, now they gotta take it on the road.

Today was an unexpectedly busy news day for the NHL.  First up is news that the lengthy negotiations to allow NHL players to participate in the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi, Russia has finally concluded.  More about this from ProHockeyTalk:

Done deal: NHL to participate in 2014 Winter Olympics

And because the Winter Olympics break is now cooked into the schedule, the 2013-14 NHL schedules can now be released.  ProHockeyTalk goes into some of the highlights at http://prohockeytalk.nbcsports.com/2013/07/19/five-highlights-from-the-2013-14-nhl-schedule/.  Probably most interesting is the six outdoor games set for next season.  That's right six!  Starting on January 1, 2014 with the outdoor game between Toronto and Detroit at Michigan Stadium that got cancelled due to the lockout.

Finishing up today's NHL news blast are the new division names in next season's realigned NHL.  (All the previous news about this got wiped out because of the server crash.  Columbus and Detroit - previously the only two Western Conference teams located in the eastern time zone - move from the Western to the Eastern Conference.)  The new NHL division names: Pacific, Central, Atlantic and Metropolitan.  Below is the new alignment:

WESTERN CONFERENCE                                        EASTERN CONFERENCE

Pacific Division        Central Division                    Metropolitan Division        Atlantic Division

Anaheim                    Chicago                                Carolina                              Boston

Calgary                    Colorado                                Columbus                            Buffalo

Edmonton                  Dallas                                  New Jersey                          Detroit

Los Angeles              Minnesota                              NY Islanders                        Florida

Phoenix                    Nashville                              NY Rangers                          Montreal

San Jose                  St. Louis                                Philadelphia                          Ottawa

Vancouver                Winnipeg                              Pittsburgh                            Tampa Bay

On Monday, the Philadelphia Flyers fired their head coach after an 0-3 start to the 2013-14 season.  That's right, they fired their coach 3 games into an 82 game season.  Pro hockey has a reputation for dismissing coaches at the drop of a puck.  But even by those standards this is early - and is the earliest ever firing in the NHL.

To put it in perspective, less than 4% of the regular season has been played.  In MLB, it would be like firing your manager after 6 games.  In the NFL, it would be like firing your head coach after the opening game.  In college, it would be like firing your head coach at halftime of the opening game!  The only other comparable pro firing was when Mike Brown got fired 5 games into the L.A.'s 82-game 2012-13 season.

The NHL had their Board of Governors meeting earlier this week.  It was announced that the salary cap will be going up from $64.3 million this season to $71 million next season.  A good sign of revenue growth rebounding from last season's lockout shortened schedule.  There was even some expansion talk, although its more speculation talk than anything official.  The expansion speculation is (from the ESPN post linked below) "Seattle and Quebec City are considered by most as the front-runners, with a second team in Toronto another possibility.  Houston, Portland, Kansas City and Las Vegas also have been mentioned in the past as potential expansion cities."

The NHL held its 2014 Winter Classic in Michigan Stadium on New Year's Day.  The game set an NHL attendance record of 105,491, surpassing the previous record set during the 2008 NHL Winter Classic.

This was one first of six outdoor games the NHL will have this season.  The next two will be this weekend.  Tonight will be a game at Dodger Stadium.  Yes, Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles.  California.  Which expects a high of 80 today.  But the game will be held at night when the temps dip into the 40's.  And they say the ice will be OK.

nhl_g_dodgers_stadium_b1_576x324.jpg

The next outdoor game this weekend is the first of two games at Yankee Stadium.  The first is Sunday with the New York Rangers facing the New Jersey Devils.  Then a second game on Wednesday with the Rangers facing the Islanders.

GAME1-master675.jpg

all of these outdoor games have gone over very, very well. a brilliant move by the nhl.

^ They really have.

I was amazed how well the L.A. game went off without a hitch.  Despite the high daytime temps, the gametime temp at the 7PM start was 65.  Which is about the indoor temp is an NHL arena.  This opens up these outdoor games to warmer locations, as long as its a night game.

NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman must be grinning his trademark Cheshire Cat Grin.  He got teams from the top two media markets in the Stanley Cup Finals.

- In L.A., the Kings won their third straight Game 7 in this year's western playoffs to advance past Chicago to the Finals.  It's the Kings latest trip to the finals since 2012 when they won the Cup.

- In NYC, the Rangers advanced from the east over Montreal into the finals.  It's the first time the Rangers have been in the finals since 1994, when they also won the Cup.

So the NHL gets a marquee matchup between the New York Rangers and the Los Angeles Kings.  And if you don't think the two largest cities in the U.S. aren't excited, take a look at the prices the tickets are going for at http://espn.go.com/nhl/playoffs/2014/story/_/id/11021881/2014-stanley-cup-final-tickets-games-los-angeles-new-york-costly

(Got some Blue Jackets news to post, but wanted to update the finals before moving on to the CBJ thread.)

The L.A. Kings demolished the N.Y. Rangers in 5.  The Kings have now won the Stanley Cup in two of the last three seasons.  And they bring nearly everyone back next season.  The Kings are right in the sweet spot for a string of championships.

The tradition of the NHL is all about ice and cold and Canada, and then some more ice and cold and Canada.  But when L.A. wins the Stanley Cup, here's where they get to take it:

Expansion talk flared up again last week with a report from Yahoo Sports that Las Vegas, Seattle, a second Toronto franchise and Quebec City might be added by 2017, the 100th anniversary of the NHL.

http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nhl-puck-daddy/nhl-expansion-to-las-vegas-and-the-dumb-deal-on--done-deal-065603703.html

Other reports added Kansas City to the mix of expansion targets.  While the NHL itself confimed nothing.  But the expansion talk has been getting greater traction since the lockout ended and the league rebounded quite nicely over the next two seasons.  Although the Yahoo report cited a 4-team expansion to 34 total teams, others have said that Seattle and Las Vegas would give you the perfect 32-team mix – four divisions of eight teams.

Enough with these teams in desert/tropical cities...and in fact enough with expansion. They should just move some teams to get these cities in the mix. Quebec City definitely needs a team, but rather than another Toronto club, how about expanding to Hamilton, Ontario?  Seattle? Okay, I guess.

I like the Twitter account @NHLinCLE.

There's been some talk that the NHL might start selling ads on game-day jerseys - like soccer teams and some european pro hockey teams do.  But apparently it won't be happening, for now:

The puck dropped on the 2014-15 season last night.  And the Canadian viewers got to see it via ref-cam (see video of it below).  Apparently only the Canadian broadcasts will feature this, not the NBC or NBCSN broadcasts.  Too bad, cuz the highlights I saw on the NHL Network looked great.

^ That news inspired The Hockey Writers website to speculate about what NHL sponsored jerseys might look like: http://thehockeywriters.com/breaking-what-will-nhl-jerseys-with-sponsors-look-like/

Would it be as horrific as the Swedish Hockey League?  Very unlikely.

15788512855_8b3753a052_d.jpg

Might it be more low-key as in the Russian KHL?  More likely.

15168564424_f7c49b97f8_d.jpg

Or would it end up looking like the sponsored practice jerseys that some NHL teams currently have?  THW concludes that somewhere in-between these practice jerseys and the KHL's game jerseys is most likely.

Edmonton Oilers win top pick in NHL Draft Lottery: http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=764037

Edmonton beat the odds to win the #1 pick in the 2015 NHL Draft.  The Oilers had an 11.5% chance to win, after finishing third-worst this season with a 24-44-14 record, and vaults over Buffalo and Arizona. (I went over the rules of the draft lottery over here in the CBJ thread.)  This is the fourth time in six years that Edmonton was awarded the #1 overall pick - 2010 and 2011 for finishing dead-last and 2012 after winning a similar draft lottery over the CBJ.

Edmonton has previously used their #1 picks to draft forwards Taylor Hall (2010), Ryan Nugent-Hopkins (2011) and Nail Yakupov (2012).  They are expected to select another forward, Connor McDavid, with this #1 pick.  McDavid is widely viewed as a "generational talent" on a par with Sidney Crosby.  To paraphase one comment at the NHL article, if Edmonton can't start to win with four #1 picks and a "generational talent", they need to quit running a hockey team and just buy lottery tickets.

The 2015 Stanley is now set after the final back-to-back conference finals Game 7 was played last night:

- Chicago advanced past Anaheim in the West

- Tampa Bay advanced past the New York Rangers in the East

This will be the third Stanley Cup Final for the Blackhawks in the last six seasons (they won it all in 2010 & 2013).  This is the first Stanley Cup Final for the Lightning since they won it all it 2004.  Tampa Bay was been an "Original Six" killer in these playoffs - they've eliminated Detroit, Montreal and the N.Y. Rangers.  Now they face the final "Original Six" team remaining in Chicago.

  • 3 weeks later...

All hail the Blackhawks - three Stanley Cups in the past six seasons qualifies as a dynasty in this modern salary-cap era:  http://espn.go.com/blog/nhl/post/_/id/38471/third-cup-proves-blackhawks-are-among-the-eras-best

And you have to feel for the Lightning.  They knocked out three "Original Six" teams before being ousted by the last remaining "O6" team in six.  Only the final game of the series had a greater than one-goal win margin.  And Tampa Bay's dominant goaltender had to play through an injury since game #2 (missing game #4): http://espn.go.com/blog/nhl/post/_/id/38473/devastated-lightning-can-only-wonder-about-what-could-have-been

Yeah I was rooting for the Lightning. I'm getting sick of the Blackhawks winning. Lightning have only won one time (2004).

Hopefully we can get the Blue Jackets (or Red Wings) on track to the Stanley Cup next year. Columbus showed they have the ability to win games down the stretch. Hopefully the injuries aren't as bad next year.
