Posted October 9, 201212 yr you rilly gotta play this first :wink2: mt. vernon, ny (1664; 4+sq mi.; pop=70K) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mount_Vernon,_New_York http://cmvny.com/ what do ossie davis, ruby dee, art carney, capt. lou albano, p.diddy, heavy d, harvey kurtzman, pete rock, cl smooth, betty shabazz, robin givens, al b. sure!, denzel washington, e.b.white, malcolm x, sidney poitier, floyd patterson, dmx, stephanie mills and more all have in common? money earnin’ mt. vernon! the 'mtv' tour starts in the SE and goes counter-clockwise first thing is st. paul church+cemetery, a national historic site hutchinson field the forelorn memorial field and grandstand (1920) a sign said it was under redevelopment & would be done in 2010 :( otherwise, some big box shopping around e. sanford ave and typical middle class suburbia on garden and grandview aves wilson’s woods park pelham pond e. lincoln ave fire dept hq i swear every town has a pinky :D devonia rd heading toward NW mt.vernon hunt woods park fleetwood metro-north station a look under four bridges right in a row here 8-) NW mount vernon is the fleetwood neighborhood it has its own older tod/downtown near the station i went up on a parking garage for a look around this is looking NW looking S back on the ground more big apt blocks on fleetwood ave gramatan ave n the circle --this is the middle of mt. vernon hartley park war memorial btw for the record did i mention mt vernon was by faaaaar a majority african american city? just about everyone i met was black. yep! ;) :mrgreen: anyway, there were two things in mtv i really always wanted to see -- here is the first: that’s right -- it’s heavy d’s bandshell from his money earnin video -- did you clik the youtube link at the top of the thread? coupla views from the park heading downtown now mtv also has a significant brazilian population, mostly people from pocos de caldas, brazil this is gramatan ave city hall police hq ^ plaque on the old bank bldg above mt vernon east station s4th st is known as the avenue buster brown is still around? who knew? old signage the local crank ranting at everybody :-o mt vernon’s more official slogan interesting very old front in a newer, crappier strip finally, this was the second thing i really wanted to see in mt.vernon: ^ that was denzel washington’s boys & girl’s club :clap: do you remember the tv commercial? October 12, 201212 yr That's a really interesting community. Seems like there are some wealthy and impoverished areas but mostly middle class neighborhoods. Has the city always had this type of make-up or has it recently improved?
