Some impressive buildings, both old and new. Duluth is bigger than I imagined. It once had an inclined-plane railway.

And you didn't even stop by to say hello!  ;) For a city that size, at 86,000 residents, it has a very dense downtown, not to mention a couple other dense business districts (not in as good shape as Downtown, but still). I don't know why I wasn't expecting skywalks to show up. And hey, they even have a Pizza Luce up there:can't be that bad.

That brick, Romanesque Revival building was sweet.

Did you eat/drink at Tycoon's? Neat concept.

Bob Dylan!

Duluth isn't a bad place.  It's almost Appalachian-by-the-Lake, in a sense.  Friendly people, decent food, and a nice setting.

One of America's best cities. Thanks for sharing!

Excellent treatment of an under-appreciated city. Looks like there's been some significant downtown infill since i was there almost 20 years ago.

That did a very nice job with their lakefront access for a city of their size. BTW did you hit up the Red Lobster!

I was only in Duluth in the dead of winter. I remember it to be a dreamlike, quaint but very hard-edged looking city; the place could definitely benefit by adding some splashes of color.

They really seem to embrace their maritime heritage, which is a great thing.

Hey, is the Fon DuLuth casino still downtown?

I very much liked Duluth.  The hills leading up from the lakefront reminded me of Seattle or San Francisco, shrunk and plopped down in the Upper Midwest.

Now if only the winters weren't so bone chilling.  You just don't go outside.  The summers are amazing.  Hardly need A/C.

distinctive and solid -- what lorain should have been :(

I can't resist....just a few miles from Duluth is some of the best surfing in America. It's no longer a secret either. Pro surfers and big time sponsors like Red Bull are now routing through Duluth, which I think is just outstanding.

p.s. for the record mrnyc, Lorain isn't so bad a surf spot either : )

Wow, that was a blast from the past. My company used to have a our back office functions in Duluth, so I traveled there frequently.  You actually got a really nice shot of my office building in one of the early frames.  I think Duluth is an awesome little town, but it always drove me crazy how many international tourists they were able to attract compared to Cleveland.  A former distinction of both Duluth and Cleveland - having one of the highest concentrations of millionaires in the *world* in the early 1900's.

This post stirred me to dig up a couple of my favorites from Duluth.  The first one is from a -20F day that was awesome.  The cold, snow and sun were invigorating.  The lake looked like it was being tortured and was steaming mad.  Walking outside for just a few moments to take some photos by Fitger's Inn was all I could take.  Summer was nice too.  The area behind Fitger's Inn will always hold a special place in my heart.

The upper Great Lakes are pulling heavy tourism from overseas now. I certainly noticed the uptick at Pictured Rocks and Sleeping Bear. Duluth is landing this tourism too.

Awesome! Lake Superior can whip up some good surf! In the summer, it's probably the same, if not warmer than the Pacific.

The winter shots of Duluth blow my mind. It looks like an excellent place for cold weather photography with all the fog, ice, and mist.
