Posted October 16, 201212 yr I don't know if this deserves its own thread, but I'm going to start one. I have a friend who lives in Michigan and has been offered a job at UC. She has turned to me, a native of Cincinnati, for apartment advice. She would like to live downtown, OTR and Clifton and I, of course, congratulated her on this decision. However, I haven't lived in Cincy in eight years and I'm not quite up to speed with some of the rental opportunities out there. She'll be living by herself in a 1BR so obviously I want to suggest a safe location. She has sent me a link to an apartment she has found on Craigslist on Mulberry Street and asked for my opinion. I really don't know anything about that area. In general, what areas/apartments should I tell her to avoid? to consider? any other thoughts? She loved her interview experience, which is the only time she has been to Cincinnati, so I'm feeling a lot of pressure to make sure she's in a great spot!
October 17, 201212 yr I would recommend adding Northside to the white list. There's offers for rentals online thru the message board & thru the weekly enewsletter @ http://www.northside.net easy drive, bus, bike to UC. Probably a little more neighborlyish than some of the areas you listed. Probably cheaper, too.
October 18, 201212 yr ^I second adding Northside to the list. Pretty cheap and the bus goes right down Hamilton Avenue and takes you to UC. I would say avoid CUF/The Heights. Parking is a PITA and there really aren't great bars around there. Clifton Proper (Ludlow area), Northside, Downtown, or OTR would be my recommendations. Some very cool bars around Ludlow and great food as well. And you avoid the hassle of dealing with the obnoxious drunks in Clifton Heights. For OTR these are your best bets: https://twitter.com/OTRApartments http://www.urbansites.net/ - I currently rent from Urban Sites and have had no issues with them. They are very quick to respond to maintenance requests in my experience. Others I know have had issues with them. I would say that Mulberry is questionable. For someone unfamiliar with OTR/Cincinnati I would say avoid living on Mulberry/East Clifton. Generally North of Liberty isn't the place to be unless you know what you are doing. The area just North of Liberty on Main/McMicken is ok, but I would avoid living west or north of the Rothenberg School at the corner of W McMicken/Main Street. Pendleton and Prospect Hill can have great apartments and are generally considered safer than OTR outside of Main Street/Vine Street IMO and sometimes significantly cheaper than OTR. Prospect Hill has some decent 1 bedrooms if one opens up.
October 19, 201212 yr Ehhh Northside is ok. But it's pretty cliquey and kind of dead sometimes. All of the excitement in the City right now is in OTR & Downtown. Mulberry is ok but not great. I second Ryan's recommendation of Prospect Hill. I have several single girl friends who all live on Boal or Milton in Prospect Hill (Just across Liberty from OTR and Pendleton. Just found this listing online: LIVE .5 BLOCK FROM WASHINGTON PARK !!! (MYURBANLIVING.COM) $550 1BD 600SQFT CALL 513.407.1164 FOR SHOWING. Marco Lacina | lacinainterest realestateteam, Realty Connections, Inc. | (513) 407-1164 1425 Pleasant St Apt 4, Cincinnati, OH Live .5 block from Washington Park. I know a younger girl (early 20's) who lives in that building and works at the Anchor. Don't know how nice it is, but it's in a GREAT location that is only getting better (surrounded by $200k townhomes) This could also be a good one: http://cincinnati.craigslist.org/apa/3292707700.html If she wants to go to a quieter, more stable neighborhood (rather than one that is in transition and getting better) she should choose Clifton, just make sure her apartments say Clifton Gaslight in them and are around Ludlow Ave. CUF (the "Clifton" area by UC is very college-y and a little crappy. Clifton Proper (Clifton Gaslight) is nicer, mainly graduate students, professors and families). For that area, I would recommend gaslightproperty.com as a starter.
October 20, 201212 yr So, is the chick a bar hound? Nobody's mentioning nearby churches..... Anyway, you can buy in Northside for less than rent. Here's 1 for $133/month. Unlimited pets, probably room for a small garden. Near bus lines. Doesn't look like there's any parking, tho. http://www.cbws.com/property/details/128379/MLS-1332780/3911-Apple-St-Cincinnati-Northside-OH-45223.aspx
October 20, 201212 yr ^ There's a curb cut and a gravel/dirt driveway. With a car parked in it on Google Streetview.
October 20, 201212 yr ^so it's perfect! Looks like you wouldn't be aggravating any neighbors with loud music & such. :-)
October 20, 201212 yr Not a lot of "eyes on the street" either, but if the building is in decent shape the price is definitely right. And the location is great.
October 20, 201212 yr Not sure if someone who is just moving here for the first time would consider buying. I would advise AGAINST buying immediately for someone who has never lived in the area.

You wouldn't be talking about a blonde girl with short hair would you? If so, I know her too! She's actually 30 now:) Anyway, her apartment is nice and I think that is the same building. Great price for the location!
October 25, 201212 yr I think UO user jakemecklenborg lives on Mulberry... I recommend asking this question on the Cincinnati subreddit reddit.com/r/cincinnati
