Posted October 23, 201212 yr Harvard on the Hocking... Building 26/former TB unit at The Ridges, marked for demolition
October 23, 201212 yr Easily one of the state's best towns. "You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers
October 23, 201212 yr The old Woolworth storefront had been boarded up with blue painted plywood for at least a decade. The owner had stubbornly refused to lease or sell to anyone (though there were apartments above during this period). This rehabilitation has been one of the most welcome changes to Court Street, along with the rebricking of the street's lower portions.
October 23, 201212 yr ^Here is a picture of the plywood you are referring to from 2008. Interestingly, the Taco Bell is also gone, and so is the old theater marquee and storefront.
October 23, 201212 yr That had to be an unusual Taco Bell. I never ate there; we usually had trouble keeping food down the next day.
October 23, 201212 yr ^It was suprisingly normal, actually. You really couldn't tell that it used to be a theater. It was dated and dirty though. They moved to the far end of East State Street and Chipotle took their place (and took the marquee down).
October 23, 201212 yr The apartments above the old Woolworth were amazing. Before I graduated, there was an insane buildout of hyper-fancy luxury lofts downtown. Those ones above the empty storefront were some of the best. I went to some great parties there and you could access the roof. The ones above Broney's also were shockingly nice for a party town like Athens. Of course, on Court Street, rents were getting San Francisco-level. I lived in six (maybe seven) different places in Athens, and I'd say Court Street ones were always my favorite. A great way to experience it is to avoid the year-long leases if you can and do subleases. You'll save a little money, but still experience Athens at its best. It was a great place to live (I'd go to grad school there in a second if offered), but expensive beyond belief. Only the alcohol was cheap. Still, Athens is far and away the best college town in Ohio and easily one of the best party towns in the country. Most big cities cannot hang with it. Athens is one of those places where bar closing is just the start of your night. The lifestyle is not conducive to academics, but the social education is pretty impressive. The most successful grads I know are major account managers, sales reps, and marketing execs on the coasts. Ann Arbor or Berkeley this is not...but it's a lot more beautiful! It's also close to Hocking Hills. I did a bunch of trips there when I went to OU. It's as functionally urban as anywhere in Ohio, yet it's surrounded by great wilderness. The Hocking-Adena bike trail has no equal in Ohio. There were times I rode to Nelsonville and had the whole trail to myself! *I've heard about this Ridges demolition and I'm upset. Great memories there exploring with friends. **And unrelated, but did anything ever happen with the old Burger King space?
October 24, 201212 yr ^^ yeah, actually the burger king space is going to be turned into some sushi/asian themed place to be open as late as bar-closing. There was an article in the A-News not too long ago. Google will probably help.
October 24, 201212 yr Is that a pedestrian scramble? Nice. That's the corner of Union and Court street at the NE corner of College Green. It's a pretty weird intersection. The photo is taken looking north up court street. Court street is one way going north. Union is oneway into court st from the left and the street from the right is two way traffic. Cars go through the intersection all the time and end up going the wrong way down union. The coffee shop on the corner keep a tally on the wall.
October 26, 201212 yr Oh Athens, so many good memories. Court Street is always a good time. Does anyone know (I really can't be more specific because of my inebriated state) the name of a pizza joint on Union going towards Court Street up from the Union Bar? I remember waiting outside in a line that went down the block just to eat some pizza and it was good. Being from Youngstown you have high expectations for pizza, and this place didn't disappoint.
