October 26, 201212 yr Hilariously, these photos remind me of Delaware, Ohio (though I know both cities aren't really that similar overall). "You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers
October 26, 201212 yr While the new infill was interesting to see, it appears to have replaced this: http://www.flickr.com/photos/mmahaffie/4295756142/#
October 26, 201212 yr I love how the Flickr photo characterized it as old and crumpling. It actually seemed pretty solid to me
October 27, 201212 yr I spent 2 1/2 years assigned to the Air Force base just a few miles from town (fifty years ago), and grew to like Dover. The relationship between military personnel and merchants was good and we were always treated well. State government buildings are nicely laid out around a large green adjacent to the downtown and it's a pleasant town just to walk around, with a lot of history. It's about forty miles from where Delaware Bay opens into the Atlantic Ocean, and the beaches were great when I was there. I liked going to the beaches to walk even in winter, just for the solitude. I had two good job offers, one with a bank, waiting for me when I finished my enlistment, and now sometimes I want to kick myself for walking away and coming back to the Midwest.
October 28, 201212 yr Pretty much what I would expect for a smaller colonial city. Nice looking town. Rob, you wouldn't have been happy in Dover. Not much train action there! But Wilmington? That's another matter! "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
October 29, 201212 yr Pretty much what I would expect for a smaller colonial city. Nice looking town. Rob, you wouldn't have been happy in Dover. Not much train action there! But Wilmington? That's another matter! KJP, The PRR still ran the Blue Diamond from Wilmington through Dover as far as Delmar, smack-dab on the Delaware-Maryland state line in 1965, although when I encountered an overbooked flight back to Philadelphia after Christmas leave in 1964 and Dad took me to the PRR station in Fort Wayne to send me back to Dover, I'm pretty sure the agent never mentioned it. I think he claimed the closest he could get me to Dover was North Philadelphia Station. I ended up taking a coach seat on the General back to Phildelphia and renting a car to get to Dover. That miserable ride on the PRR mostly quenched any budding interest in trains until after the inception of Amtrak.
