Ohio State chemists have grown a brain from skin cells – and they think it could be a business

Ohio State University chemists have grown a nearly complete embryonic brain in a dish from adult skin cells – and they think it could be a business.

Rene Anand, professor of biological chemistry, pharmacology and neuroscience, introduced the “organoid” he’d grown at a scientific conference this week. The university describes it as about the size of a pencil eraser and developed with neural structures analogous to a 5-week-old human embryo, but it lacks blood vessels.

Anand and partner Susan McKay, a research associate in biological chemistry and pharmacology, in May incorporated NeurXstem LLC and are seeking federal grants directed toward small businesses commercializing scientific research.

Huh, makes you wonder if the next generation of computers are going to be partly organic [shudder].

Nah, organic neural networks are still very different than electronic ones. They have a completely different way of storing and manipulating information. Even more importantly though I think is the fact that electronic computing still has a surprising amount of room to grow; Intel has some extremely fast chip technology in development and they are getting much better at building quantum processors. I do not think it's far-fetched to anticipate that we will be able to fully simulate a human brain in a traditional or quantum computer before we understand enough about a real organic brain to integrate it into a machine.

'One of the largest human experiments in history' was conducted on unsuspecting residents of San Francisco

Kevin Loria

...

Over the next 20 years, the military would conduct 239 "germ-warfare" tests over populated areas, according to news reports from the 1970s (after the secret tests had been revealed) in The New York Times, The Washington Post, Associated Press, and other publications (via Lexis-Nexis), and also detailed in congressional testimony from the 1970s.

These tests included the large-scale releases of bacteria in the New York City subway system, on the Pennsylvania Turnpike, and in National Airport just outside Washington, DC.

In a 1994 congressional testimony, Cole said that none of this had been revealed to the public until a 1976 newspaper story revealed the story of a few of the first experiments — though at least a Senate subcommittee had heard testimony about experiments in New York City in 1975, according to a 1995 Newsday report.

Last line breached? Deadly gene resisting all forms of antibiotics found in China

Published time: 19 Nov, 2015 12:07

Scientists have identified the first gene helping bacteria resist the only antibiotic group known to be effective when all others fail. Chinese and British experts came to the alarming conclusion that our last line of antibiotic defense has been breached.

The conclusion follows a large body of prior research that warns humanity about the dangers of becoming completely resistant to antibiotics. Now, Chinese doctors cooperating with UK specialists from Bristol and Cardiff Universities say we could soon be looking at the spread of uncontrollable superbugs.

In the research published in the journal Lancet Infectious Diseases, the researchers predict a return to the Dark Ages, when even common germs like E. Coli put a person in mortal danger.

The movie is hysterical, clever and worth watching and paying 3.99 or whatever I paid to watch it, online.

It's truly prophetic, unfortunately.

Not actually that crazy of an assertion. A lot of respected theoretical physicists basically agree. Maybe "almost definitely" is too strong.

The Robots Are Not Coming for All of Our Jobs

https://www.jacobinmag.com/2020/02/robots-jobs-united-states-gdp-wages-productivity-growth-economy

...

GDP growth — which has been slow by historical standards — has also been producing larger declines in unemployment than you’d expect if old relationships were still in effect. If the robots were moving in, you’d expect just the opposite — job growth badly lagging economic growth, unemployment stickier than it has been. But these things are just not happening.

From the same article, a reason why despite low unemployment the current GDP growth sucks for the average worker.

Then, around 1995, productivity accelerated with the commercialization of the internet and the dot-com boom, which came with a surge in corporate investment in IT. Solow’s quip was retired, and the dawn of a new era was pronounced. Curiously, that productivity acceleration was a time of low unemployment and rising real wages — unlike the present, when unemployment is low but wage growth sucks.

Idiots ‘BURNING 5G masts’ after conspiracy that ‘radiation sparked coronavirus’ is spread by celebs

Quote

The theory originated last month after a video filmed at a US health conference claimed Africa was not as affected by the disease because it is "not a 5G region".

The myth was quickly debunked after the World Health Organisation confirmed there were thousands of Covid-19 cases in Africa.

The government has also confirmed there is "no evidence to suggest that 5G has anything to do with Covid-19".

Celebs have been slammed for sharing the conspiracy theory, including Jason Gardiner and Callum Best, who posted similar claims that 5G can impact the immune system.
