Posted October 28, 201212 yr Le Plateau Here are lots of photos taken from Montreal's Le Plateau. This neighborhood was developed in the late 19th century and contains thousands of examples of Montréal's distinctive rowhouse chateaus. This in my opinion was the most extensive gentrified neighborhood in the area. October 28, 201212 yr There is no wildlife in Spanish cities, urban obsession toppled nature a while ago in Barcelona. As for Montreal, one wonders why it doesn't get more play internationally.

You mean why it is not more in the international spotlight? Yea I wonder too. Such a nice urban environment and so within reach for my Americans on the East Coast.

October 29, 201212 yr Nice photos! I also went to Montreal over the summer and had a great time. After NYC it's my favorite North American city and it also has what I think is the second best transit system after NYC's. The Plateau is an amazing neighborhood for sure and seems pretty much ideal to me. It has some gentrification along St. Laurent Blvd for sure, but for the most part I thought it was pretty authentic with a good mix of trendiness and old school charm. It's certainly not as gentrified as what I have seen in other cities. Did you go to Schwartz's? That place is good but it's no Slyman's!
October 30, 201212 yr I'd love to spend a year (alright, a summer and fall) in a Montreal neighborhood like this. Montreal is much cheaper than comparable American cities, yet quality of life seems higher.

October 31, 201212 yr Montreal rent is about 1/3 San Francisco and Manhattan right now. The city has had some of the best bang for buck in the world for quite some time. http://www.numbeo.com/cost-of-living/city_result.jsp?country=Canada&city=Montreal Yeah, it's amazing more people don't try to move there. It must be the brutal winters...but the city has a great tunnel network and arguably the best mass transit system in North America. Oh, and the girls are gorgeous, every bit on the level of any wealthier cosmopolitan city. Montreal is low cost of living with extremely high quality of life.
October 31, 201212 yr Yea $900 for a single bedroom is not bed, although definitively more expensive than a Cincinnati, Cleveland, or Pittsburgh on average in their attractive areas.
November 1, 201212 yr ^Montreal is on a whole different level from those cities. It is comparable to New York and San Francisco. Is Cleveland really any cheaper in its attractive areas? I've seen similar prices in downtown Cleveland. Is Pittsburgh still any cheaper in nice neighborhoods? Cincinnati, yeah, that's a fair argument, but you give up a ton in lifestyle. Keep in mind a crappy neighborhood in Montreal is still better than a nice neighborhood in Ohio. It's far more functionally urban and safer. It's also going to have better public schools. Montreal can't be touched on bang for buck. Nothing in America comes close. Our comparable places are ridiculously expensive (and we don't have many comparable places). *You can find $500-700 apartments in "bad" parts of Montreal. These areas are still safer and have far more amenities than the nice urban areas in Ohio, not to mention all of Montreal has a transit system 100 years ahead of Ohio on its best day. I think only Philly might have some comparable urban areas with similar bang for buck. Philadelphia is about the same size as Montreal too, but the transit system is inferior. Damn, I need to learn French and figure out a way to get a work visa in Canada! Or figure out a way to get a scholarship/student visa at McGill...
November 2, 201212 yr i liked the little castle house. talk about your home being your castle -- that one takes it all the way!

Yea you can get cheaper rent in some of Cleveland's nicer neighborhoods. Definitively in Ohio City, Shaker Square, Lakewood, Clifton, and probably even Tremont. You have to remember that most of Cleveland's nicer areas are still not 100% gentrified. Downtown Cleveland is a bit a anomaly with ridiculously high rents. Pittsburgh seems to have pretty high rent prices in places like Shaddyside and Squirrel Hill but it seems you can still get a pretty good deal in Lawaranceville, Bloomfield and Friendship. Not sure if I buy the argument that Montreal's crappy neighborhoods are much better than Ohio best. Can you really say that a crappy Montreal neighborhood is better than Ohio City, Short North, German Village, Hyde Park, The Oregon District, Mount Adams, etc. Even Montreal's nice neighborhoods have problems. For instance Le Plateau has some serious drug problems. I saw a guy shooting up in broad day light in one of their pocket parks and some locals were mentioning the neighborhood is not always safe. But yes you are probably right that for the price it is hard to match Montreal.
November 3, 201212 yr ^^^ One thing about Montreal is there is a good mix of families, blue collar folks, and hipsters in many neighborhoods. Unlike in the US where you have the trendy urban professional neighborhoods vs. the ghetto neighborhoods vs. the immigrant neighborhoods vs. the old blue collar neighborhoods. Yeah, there are certainly neighborhoods that are trendy and are immigrant heavy but you don't see the polarization of good and bad areas that you see in US cities. I doubt Montreal really has any truly bad areas by US standards, just areas that are less trendy than others and poorer. And even those lesser neighborhoods have good functioning urban amenities.
