ODOT is going to be showing its plans for reconstructing the I-270 interchanges with 315, US 23, and I-71 (again) next week.

The Meeting will be on Wednesday, June 9 at the Worthington Schools Admin building (200 E. Wilson Bridge Rd) between 5-7 PM.

think anyone will say something like to combine all three into a really wide interstate? i just hope they remember about bike trails when they decide this.

If you go up the ramp from 315 NB to I-270 EB (or in many cases, sit there), you can see work on extending the Olentangy "All-purpose trail" over the Olentangy and somehow around the I-270/Oh 315 interchange (why the path wasn't kept on the east side of the Olentangy through there, I'll never know).

That is will be the only bike trail in that area (to my knowledge).

While it looks like the "downtown cap" is falling victim to finances, ODOT's proposed design for restructuring I-270, 71, 23, and 315 was unvailed last night. The highlights...

Plenty of forced, or channeled weaves (meaning alot of roadway bridges so drivers aren't contending with as much merging traffic) along I-270 between US 23 and SR 315.

Removing two of the existing cloverleaf loops between 315 and I-270 and replace them with a "flyover" ramp (from 315 NB to 270 WB) and what I would describe as a "paperclip design" ramp from 315 SB looping over both directions of 315 to connect with the ramp from 315 NB to 270 EB.

The cloverleaf interchange between I-270 and US 23 would be changed into a "Double Point Urban Interchange" with cloverleaf loops to 270 from 23, but signalized intersections for traffic coming onto US 23 from 270 (the interchange would look like the Hamilton Rd or Georgesville Rd interchanges along I-270, but with more lanes for traffic)

Replacing the cloverleaf loop from 270 EB to 71 NB with a mini (setback?) flyover ramp (they would be taking land from Anheiser Busch, and not touch Sharon Woods Park)

And the main feature....

Making seperate grades for traffic along 23 between 270 and the Camp Mary Orton entrance (that ridge you go over between 270 and the county line), with through traffic being routed under the local traffic with an open cut tunnel (where there are no intersections you can look down on the traffic below).

ODOT has an AVI file so you can envision driving through this "tunnel" (Beware 7 MB large), but has not, as of yet, added maps of the proposals to their website on this project.

Total cost, supposedly 500 Million.

If they do this shit before they replace the Brent Spence Bridge (total cost $750M) I will kill someone.

Let us know when maps come out. I'd like to see them.

Supposedly work would start in 2006 with the rebuild on the 270-71 interchange. Work would start on the 315/23/270 complex in 2008.

That's what ODOT was telling everyone yesterday.

What about the I-75 rebuild? I think I-75 needs a hell of a lot more help than these corridors. Some of it is in its original 1950s-1960s construction.

These are just my opinions, of course.

My understanding is ODOT developed some sort of scoring system to rank projects concerning priority and funding (the only good thing that came out of Easton).

There are plenty of Central Ohio citizens who would say fixing I-270 north and I-70/71 is more important than any project in Cincy or Cleveland. It's just a matter of what you experience.

I-270 between Dublin and Westerville has been a mess for 20 years. Doubling the width has freed up through traffic. Now they want to make so you can get on/off the interstate without waiting 20 mins or getting sideswiped by merging traffic.

I would say that the Brent Spence rebuild should be the #1 priority in the state, but perhaps I am just a bit biased. It just seems to have such an importance nationally with the vast amount of truck traffic. As for other I75 rebuilds, I think they are important, but can wait. Those left hand exits (Hopple street off of Northbound, for example) can cause traffic problems and it would be great if they could be dealt with. The repaving of a couple of years ago through downtown did wonders, however... I remember the tire ruts that had dug so deeply in there that you could practicly drive without touching the steering wheel.

Crazy stuff, hopefully it makes getting from 315 to 270 a bit easier...trying to merge onto the highway, especially during rush hour, is near impossible, especially with 23 only a few miles away.

these are quite confusing, it'll make it fun to go up to the north side to go in the tunnel

Thanks for the maps, Magyar. I haven't been to your site to read your comments, but I'll check it out when I get a chance.

ODOT has already approved 350 million to Dayton and 450 million to Cinci for the I-75 construction about 4 months ago. I do believe that is Ohio's top priority right now. But unfortunately, it also going to take longer to design and build. So other projects are going to get done first.

As for a tunner over Ft. Washington Way (if that is the tunnel this thread is about), I honestly hope that never happens. That is my favorite part of driving through downtown...looking at my windows up at Scripps, Enquirer, Atrium, and soon Queen City Square. I hope they never cover that up!

^ While I agree that it's nice to look at the buildings while driving through there, I think that FWW in its current state is at least a psychological barrier to most people. I think it's important when the Banks come to fruition to tie that in with the blocks north of Third St. so that it seems less like an "island" or some remote "destination" and more like part of the urban fabric.

^Bingo.

I think Kentucky owns the Brent Spence (along with most of the Ohio River at Cinti), and ODOT is a only minority player in its reconstruction.

^ Yeah, the ODOT money would only be for the Ohio approaches. The main holdup is federal money, and Kentucky seems to be having budget problems as well.

From ThisWeek Newspapers, 5/12/05:

33/270 interchange is the worst

By MICHAEL RACEY

Villager Staff Writer

This should come as no surprise to Dublin commuters: the intersection of U.S. 33 and I-270 is the worst-performing interchange on the outerbelt between Sawmill Road and I-70.  The Mid-Ohio Regional Planning Commission and several consultants are undertaking a study of the I-270 corridor between Sawmill and I-70 as well as U.S. 33 between Dublin and U.S. 42.

The commission and its consultants shared preliminary results from their study on Tuesday night at the city's Municipal Building.  "(That interchange) arguably causes the most problems in our study area," said Tim Newman, a consultant with CH2M HILL.

The clover leaf-shaped interchange has the highest accident rate in the corridor and is the most congested.  Its current design is hopelessly out of date, having been something engineers came up with in the 1950s.

Ohio 161 project nears starting line

By JASON MAIN

Advocate Reporter

With construction set to start next year, the Ohio Department of Transportation is making the final preparations for the realignment of Ohio 161 between New Albany and Granville.

ODOT needs about 670 acres of private land to reroute a portion of the highway north of the existing road, construct three interchanges and expand it to four lanes. Department officials hope to acquire all the property needed for the project's first phase by the end of the year, as well as finalize engineering documents.

Among the land ODOT has taken for the project is Lee Conner's home along Mink Street in Jersey Township. Conner and his wife, Sherry, recently moved to a Pataskala subdivision after coming to an agreement with ODOT for their land, which will become an easement along the new highway.

The Conners moved to their former home about six years ago from California to live closer to their family. They enjoyed the peace of country living that their home afforded them, Conner said. When his grandchildren came to visit, they would shoot bows in the yard or go fishing with him at their neighbor's pond nearby, he said....

I love this project, it is a great alternative to 70 for Zanesville residents. At least to get to the north end of Columbus! 161 comes out 1 exit north of Easton, so a lot of area residents use this way to get there. 161 and 16 will combine to make an expressway that will go from 270 to 77. Zanesville has 3 exits off of 16, so I don't think the project will hurt any with some people using it to bypass 70. I know I'm rambling, so I will stop!

ROAD TO FUTURE

Ohio 161 project takes off in spring

By JASON MCALISTER

Advocate Reporter

NEWARK -- Motorists should expect few delays and no detours along Ohio 161 this spring, as construction begins to widen the road.

Tree removal this winter will mark the first signs of construction of the Ohio Department of Transportation project, according to Cindy Brown, a spokeswoman for ODOT.

The project will add another major connector between Newark and Columbus, and is being built to reduce traffic along the corridor.

"Where you have congestion, you have safety problems and potential accidents," she said.

With spring comes the shovels to begin the two-phase project.

The first phase includes widening the road from New Albany to Watkins Road and -- weather permitting -- will be completed by winter of 2007.

It has not yet been decided if traffic will flow on the first phase once it is completed....

I dont know if anyone else has heard any info on the proposed upgrade to I-270/1-71 (North Side)? I was reading in the Janurary issue of Columbus Monthly that ODOT is planning on building a stacked flyover ramp from I-270 eastbound to I-71 northbound to replace the aging and very dangerous loop ramp. I looked on the ODOT site but any info about that interchange was from 2004.

The I-71/I-270 project is a go and will look similar to the SR-161/I-270 interchange when finished.  My company put in a proposal to do the project but we didn't win the bid.  Columbus Monthly also said that the Sullivant Ave./Demorest Rd. improvement project would be constructed this year which is great news for me.  That was the first project I ever worked on when I graduated from OSU in 1999.  The planning for that project started in 1994, but was delayed because of all the hoopla surrounding the city's curb ramp standards.  It seemed like they came out with a new curb ramp standard every month back then.

Just an update:

There will be an advisory meeting to update study recommendations and to seek input, to help develop a strategic plan, etc., etc., etc.

I don't believe this is open to the public, but I might be wrong.  You might want to check with MORPC.  An e-mail link for Nick Gill is on this project page:

Either way, there should be some kind of news about the meeting within a week.

I didn't realize that interchange was that old (1950s).

It isn't.

None of I-270 was built in the 1950s.

The NW corner is only 35-40 years old.

Officials Announce Top Road Projects For 2006

I-270/S.R. 161 Construction To Continue

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- In 2006, there are more than 400 scheduled road projects, but six major projects top the list.

Interstate 270/State Route 161/Sunbury Road Interchanges

The interchanges at I-270/S.R. 161 and S.R. 161/Sunbury Road will continue their complete reconstruction in 2006, the third year of the 3 1/2 year Northeast Expressway Transformation project. There will be various lane and ramp closures throughout the project. This year, crews will continue construction of the tunnel from S.R. 161 west to I-270 south. The ramp from SUnbury Road to eastbound S.R. 161 will be closed for 180 days during the 2006 construction season. The ramp from eastbound S.R. 161 to northbound I-270 will remain closed throughout the year.

Sullivant Avenue/Demorest Road Project

Sullivant Avenue will be widened to 5 lanes between Wilson Road and Athens Avenue. Turn lanes and sidewalks will be added. Demorest Road will be reconstructed between Glorious Road and Parkside Road. Traffic will be maintained on Sullivant Avenue. There will be a long term closure of Demorest Road. This project is expected to be completed in late fall of 2006.

U.S. Highway 62/Morse Road Roundabout

A modern roundabout that will accomodate two lanes of traffic in each direction will be constructed at the intersection of U.S. 62 and Morse Road. Other improvements include construction of new storm sewers and a leisure trail that will direct pedestrians and bicyclists away from the roundabout. Traffic will be maintained throughout most of the project on a temporary road. The roundabout will be completed in 2007.

Norton Road Widening

Norton Road will be widened between West Broad Street and Hall Road. New curbs, an improved drainage system, and a new structure of Big Run will be added. The project will make changes to improve access for bicyclists and pedestrians. There will be various lane restrictions throughout the project, which is expected to be completed in 2007.

Main Street Bridge Construction

A new landmark Main Street Bridge will be constructed over the Scioto River beginning in 2006. This bridge will have unprecedented pedestrian accommodations and a unique inclined arch design. Demolition is expected to occur in the summer and work will continue until the bridge opens in early 2009.

I-270/Interstate 71 (north side) Interchange Ramp Project

The existing loop ramp from eastbound I-270 to northbound I-71 will be replaced with a flyover ramp to eliminate weaving and merging. There will be various short-term restrictions in the area. This project is expected to be completed in mid-2007.

It's good to know that they will be working on the I-270/I-71 north interchange.

^ Yep...by far one of the scariest interchanges out there.  It'll promote sprawl...but save lives, so I'm all for it!

A big "finally" for the Main St. bridge.

Holy shit I can't believe they're finally going to start the Sullivant/Demorest project.  The company I used to work for started designing that project in 1994!  When I graduated from Ohio State in 1999 the design for Sullivant/Demorest was almost finalized, or so we thought.  I left that company in 2003 and changes were still being made to the project (mostly curb ramp modifications).  Sullivant/Demorest was one of the first projects I ever worked on so I can't wait to see the final product!

What is a curb ramp?

Curb ramps are the concrete ramps that are usually found at intersections which allow people in wheelchairs to go from the sidewalk down to the pavement and vice versa.  A few years ago a lot of municipalities, including Columbus, were being sued for not providing ADA compliant curb ramps (ADA specifies the max slope, min. width, etc for curb ramps).  During that time period any project with curb ramps involved was pretty much put on hold until the City Engineer, City Attorney, and the ADA folks could come to an agreement.

^Is that why every municipality under the sun is putting those bricks with the little traction humps at intersections?

Yes.  They are either using bricks with the bumps, or rubberized mats with bumps.  In some Columbus neighborhoods the installations were done so poorly, they had to rip out the concrete and bricks entirely and do it over a second and third time.

yep, those bumps are called "Detectable Warnings" and are there for those that are blind or have compromised vision.  My favorite ADA addition is the audible crosswalk signal.  You can hear it at Vine & High in front of the Columbus Convention Center.

^We have one of those in Oxford, I absolutely hate it! All that beeping drives me nuts. When you touch the button, it screams "Wait! Wait!" and then when the light changes, "Proceed with Caution!" Sometimes I want to punch the thing's voice box right into traffic!

I've never heard one that actually talks.

You are a lucky man.

Go to the intersection of Mill and Granville St in Gahanna.

I like the crosswalk signals in downtown Indianapolis which count down the seconds until the signal changes from "Walk" to "Don't Walk".

Those are awesome. Louisville has them also. I wonder about their durability however, the City of Fairfield installed some and in just a couple years more than half didn't work. They have since been replaced and haven't had any problems. I hope to see their use grow in the coming years.
