Fences have gone up around the property.

Bypassing Walton Hills is interesting because it pretty much denys Cuyahoga County any leverage.  Still, the Ford plant is next door (literally, the buildings almost touch) and that will be closing.

Northfield Village -- Developers of a planned gaming and entertainment complex at Northfield Park have been granted permission by village officials to begin construction.

Brent Reitz, vice president of operations for Northfield Park Associates, said Oct. 5 that ground breaking is expected to take place in four to six weeks.

"Right now, we're working to finalize the plans and we will have more information later in the month," said Reitz. "Even though the village approved it, we're doing some tweaking."

Northfield Park is starting construction on its new Hard Rock-themed racino and expects to open late this year.

“Everything is moving forward now,” harness track owner Brock Milstein said Wednesday. “All the financing is in place ... We’re going to start to see some serious construction here in the next couple of weeks.”

Northfield submits formal application for racino

Northfield Park has submitted a formal application to the state to launch its racino.

The horse-racing venue is the last of the seven tracks in Ohio to apply for a state license to offer slots-like video lottery terminals.

The application was submitted Friday.

The Ohio Lottery Commission still is waiting for additional paperwork from Hard Rock International, the company partnering with the track, before starting its initial review, agency spokeswoman Danielle Frizzi-Babb said.

Hopefully with their little village coffers flush they'll allow the main drag of route 8 to move up to 35 mph... I avoid Northfield as much as possible because of that and I live very close.

I live in the village itself, in fact I often walk my dog through the Northfield Inn parking lot and say hi to the cruiser that is usually there.  Ever notice that they sit there but don't seem to pull a lot of people over?  I wonder if there's statistics anywhere....it seems like Walton Hills is way more aggressive.  It seems to me they are just keeping an eye on things.  Bedford and Maple aren't that far away...

My concerns have more to do with the traffic flow (of course, as a known resident, the speed limit doesn't really apply to me lol).  I'd like to see them patch the parking lot into Oak Leaf and maybe even add a ramp to the freeways.  But they are talking about....adding traffic lights.

Hey, maybe they will start clearing instead of plowing over the sidewalks on 8.  :)

Northfield Park racino to be named ‘Rocksino’

Hard Rock International is creating a new brand for its first gambling venture in Ohio.

The new racino, under construction in Northfield, will be called Hard Rock Rocksino Northfield Park, the Orlando-based company announced Monday.

The Rocksino name pays tribute to Cleveland as the birthplace of rock ’n’ roll and is a play on the word racino, the industry term for a combined horse track and casino.

I'm glad they explained that.

Rocksino project on schedule for December opening

NORTHFIELD: The interior of the new Hard Rock racino doesn’t look much like a gambling and music venue — at least right now amid construction.

Wires hang from the ceiling. Dirt and materials cover the concrete floor. Sparkling steel studs are everywhere, creating a huge, shiny metal skeleton upon which the state’s newest gambling attraction will be built.

I bet the internet cafe in Northfield Plaza shuts down the day before it opens

The new Hard Rock Rocksino Northfield Park in Northfield will open Dec. 18, as promised.

Racino officials had pledged earlier this year to open that date.

The company made it official Monday night, announcing that the gaming and entertainment venue will open to the public at 5:30 p.m. that day.

A special ceremony is planned for 4 p.m. and a “guitar smash,” the traditional way Hard Rock opens a new venue, at 5 p.m.

I'm already planning on taking Walton Road to Sagamore and wiggling through the back streets to get home that day.    The building looks tremendous though.

I think this will, in the long run, end up being a benefit to the downtown casino experience even if it hurts the revenue.  The Horseshoe will tilt more towards the high-end, high-stakes gaming, while these other places will entice the opposite sort of gamer.

We'll see, but the Horseshoe will continue to attract the more hard core serious gambler, while the casual, more "experience" oriented one will probably head towards Northfield.

The low-stakes hard-core gambler will head towards Thistledown.

Table games will continue to set the Horseshoe apart from other local competition, so I expect them to play that up and improve amenities for table gamers.  Slot players may prefer the Rockcino which looks very spacious in pics vs the tight quarters downtown.  Hopefully the Horseshoe folks figure out the situation with the poker room so they can host a WSOP event here.  We've now been shafted 2 years in a row.

The "soft opening" was Monday night.  The buzz around the Village (pretty much all the local PTBs went) is that the place is absolutely incredible.

I never knew it had 1,900 seats for concert space.

I've heard this place will set a new standard for gaming in this market.  It will be interesting to see how Rock Gaming responds to the first gaming threat in the Cleveland market, and the Hard Rock name is very recognizable.  Too bad the complications of the phase 2 site means that to accomplish what Hard Rock has done will take twice as much money for new construction.  I just don't see it happening now, and that doesn't have to be a bad thing.  Compared with the $600M cost that was stated years ago for the new construction phase 2 (I'm sure that estimate has gone up), I can see dropping another $300M into Higbee to spread out the gaming in a more spacious arrangement, maybe an upscale hotel on the upper floors and if mechanicals allow a rooftop lounge.  How cool to party while looking up at the terminal tower bathed in color changing light.  Rock could also buy the mall and make it special again.  I know the original thinking was not to compete with existing amenities downtown, but these additions would compliment the area and make the downtown casino unique enough to stand out.

The 1,900 seat concert space - which sounded impressive - appears to be nothing more than a ballroom that is configured for concerts. The concert setup I saw/they discussed on TV looked liked nothing more than a portable stage  at one end of rectangular room - with folding chairs set up about 50 across on one level. Reminded me of the setup of the tent amphitheater at Tower City a few years back... Lame vs the "theater" I had thought they'd built.

The Cleveland casino already has two attached hotels, the Ritz Carlton and the Renaissance.

I have such mixed feelings on Tower City.

One side of me says that I hope Rock buys Tower City. Currently Tower City is a joke, and all we have seen is more and more vacancies, and the loss of quality store being replaced by crappy stores. The building is also looking worn. Look down at the tiles on the floor. The whole place needs a massive renovation. It would be awesome to see the place revitalized and brought back to life. This would help the casino tremendously.

On the other hand Id love to see the whole Tower City mall idea scraped, and allow retail to flow back onto the streets.

Right now we have the worst of both worlds!

The stores reflect the population served.

The floor tiles looked like that when The Avenue at Tower City opened in 1990. The reason? The floor dates from the original 1930 Cleveland Union Terminal.

Considering that more than 40,000 commuters flow through Tower City on a typical weekday, the retail component there isn't likely to go away anytime soon. But it will constantly change, just as the retail market always does.

This is true.  In my mind I was thinking more a boutique gambling hotel (if such a thing exists)...basically Vegas style tricked out suites not available at the Ritz or Renaissance.  If that were the plan then a few upper floors of the Higbee could be great.

Something like that could be in the works since they kicked Key out when they bought the building. you dont just get rid of a paying tenant like that without something worthwhile planned...

How so?  I was under the impression that this was just slots, not exactly high roller stuff.  It's a step up from scratch-offs at the gas station, I'll give it that much.

Well its definitely nicer than the casino in erie. Dropped a twenty in the vlts. I'll come back when there's a good show i guess or if i have a $20 bill to get rid of.  I noticed it didn't seem to negatively affect the rest of the economy in Northfield.

Well, that could be that there isn't much, at least of interest to anyone living more than a couple miles away.

Supposedly MGM just paid just over a billion dollars for the Rocksino.
