A respectable, but non-exciting capital.

I've heard Boise is an extremely artsy town. There was a good bit of retail downtown as well. Thanks for the pics...I've never been.

It's one of the healthier, more vibrant downtowns of the smaller state capital cities.

I like how the driveway loops under the front steps of the capitol. I can't say I remember seeing that pattern before.

Thanks for the photos!

E&S: Here is something similar, but it's a city hall rather than a state capitol.

Excellent photos. I think that in summer season Boise has a vibrant street life that reflects the presence and influence of a strong arts community. To see coverage of that, go over to SSP and look for some of Sawtooth's photo threads. The city has a gorgeous natural setting and is very bike-friendly. Public policy there is guided by a strong progressive philosophy, and is also overtlly gay-friendly, quite a contrast with the homophobic atmosphere that prevailed in 1955 during the McCarthy era and resulted in one of the nation's most scandalous witch hunts. For more about that, see this Wikipedia entry.

I wSas there a zillion years ago. The stream that ran through town had lots of tubers. I remember seeing a movie there. Not sure if it was the theater pictured.

There were a large number of Asian graves there & people watered their lawns by flooding them when they could. There were little canals through the neighborhoods.

per Robert's comments about being gay friendly - doesn't Idaho still have the sodomy laws making homosexuality illegal?

Sodomy laws don't mean anything after the Texas ruling. Sometimes cities are liberal when a state is not (again, see Texas: Austin).

Didn't know Boise was pro-gay. Good thing for Larry Craig, I guess.

It looks like Salt Lake City, but I'm sure it's more fun!
