Posted December 1, 201212 yr the old brooklyn navy yard (1806-1966) built a lot of historic ships such as robert fulton’s steamship, the ironclad monitor of the civil war era, the ill-fated maine, ww2 battleships such as the missouri, the first modern aircraft carrier the antietam, jfk’s pt109, etc. during its peak years, the big deuce era, it employed over 70k people 24hrs a day. after several decades of floundering, its gone fully commercial. now the home of steiner studios, artists lofts, yadda yadda. there are lots of beautifully crafted, historic old bldgs. some are listed as historic, but not all. more: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brooklyn_Navy_Yard downside is you can’t visit without a pass. i got a quick tour the other evening. too quick to do it any justice unfortunately. these two suck, but it was an awesome little bldg that is used today for making whiskey of all things. i was trying to get a shot of the stills inside. there were piles of mash in back, it was pretty surprising. this is the oldest yard, where they built the ironclad monitor *** despite the crappy drive-by pics i think you can get the gist, locally speaking it reminded me of a cross between cleveland’s tyler village and the old lorain shipyard. ***
