Antigua

On a wonderful trip last year I went to Guatemala for three weeks. Antigua is definitively one of Guatemala's best. It is a tourism town located about an hour from Guatemala City wedged between a number of volcanoes (some of which are still active). The City used to be the capital of Spain's Central American colonies yet a huge earthquake in the 1700s led them to abandon the city and move the capital to Guatemala City. Yet some residents remained and maintained the City for a much smaller population. This is like Guatemala's version of Rome with numerous ruins of churches and prominent governmental buildings. Currently the City is very well maintained with beautiful cobbled-streets, colorful homes, and hundreds of beautiful courtyards. While it is not the most "authentic" place in Guatemala due to the high number of tourists and English speakers, a trip for an urban enthusiast to Guatemala would not be complete without a visit to Antigua.

Another Ruin. This place used to be a convent but has been converted into a museum, hotel and wedding area. I felt like there was an endless amount of areas to explore.
