March 19, 20196 yr ^^ That interior shot is disturbing. It looks like some kind of endless human/maze/beehive/anthill. It is Orwellian, or like something from a mall in hell. The outside is so much better. It is amazing though how it all has been coming together. Especially when you look at the first page and the mess of a railyard the site was. Other cities can benefit from seeing how NYC has done this(one in particular that should cover up the damn railways through it's grand lakefront park, but I won't mention it.) March 24, 20196 yr a roundup of vessel h8 via hyperallergic: There is so much hate for Thomas Heatherwick’s “Vessel” in Manhattan’s Hudson Yards, and here are my two favorites (though you should make sure to read Michael Kimmelman’s take on Hudson Yards at the New York Times). First, Feargus O’Sullivan at City Lab: Because, frankly, many of Heatherwick’s projects stink. Time and again, his designs crop up in urban ensembles that look as if the dystopian world of Orwell’s 1984 had been given a kooky Wes Anderson makeover. It’s not aesthetics that are the inherent problem, however. The issue is that the kind of developments that Heatherwick’s structures brand appear playful but are actually loci for a queasy mix of distraction and surveillance, places that promise cheerful hi-jinx but which enforce consumption-driven regimentation on their users. Look at the Vessel (which some wags have already informally renamed “the Shawarma,” thanks to its resemblance to a spinning meatloaf-cone). Here’s a fun $200 million tower of staircases that invites visitors to clamber—but only under ludicrously strict conditions and control. Like many of his projects, it’s essentially a gaudy monument to being only ever-so-slightly free. Then, Kate Wagner at The Baffler: It is a Vessel for capital, for a real estate grift that can charge more for an already multi-million dollar apartment because it merely faces it. It is a Vessel for a so-called neighborhood that poorly masks its intention to build luxury assets for the criminally wealthy under the guise of investing in the city and “public space.” What is public space if not that land allocated (thanks to the generosity of our Real Estate overlords) to the city’s undeserving plebeians, who can interface with it in one of two ways: as consumers or interlopers, both allowed only to play from dawn ‘til dusk in the discarded shadows of the ultra-rich? Unlike a real neighborhood, which implies some kind of social collaboration or collective expression of belonging, Hudson Yards is a contrived place that was never meant for us. Because of this, the Vessel is also a Vessel for outrage like my own.
March 24, 20196 yr They're full of shit. The Vessel looks awesome, is accessible to the public, and will be enjoyed by tens millions of people over time. This overanalysis is desperate and bourgey, and I bet they would have criticized the Eifel Tower with the same exaggerated rhetoric.
March 24, 20196 yr yup the internet media content vacuum that needs to be filled is just insatiable, isnt it? i bet reality is that its an inverse proposition where the more they write like that the more the people will like the vessel. if they want to fling mud in hy ok maybe save it for the ridiculously high end shoppes in the new mall? or hows about just praise hy and the vessel for the amazing engineering and design feats that they are? no chance of that i guess. positivity doesnt sell.

March 30, 20196 yr I agree with a post upthread (or maybe the Highline thread?) that called the Vessel alien or sinister looking. I get a foreboding feeling just looking at it. Despite that it's very creative and will be an icon for that area.

April 1, 20196 yr info and renders on the the other section of the yards, the west side rail yards -- the decking over is supposed to break ground this year. WEST SIDE WONDERLAND New renderings revealed for western expansion of Hudson Yards park By SYDNEY FRANKLIN • September 28, 2018 Finally, we have a visual of what the rest of the rail yards at New York City’s Hudson Yards will become. CityRealty reported that new renderings have been revealed of the expansion of the 17-million-square-foot megaproject, detailing how the development will take over the entirety of the Amtrak railyard. more: https://archpaper.com/2018/09/nelson-byrd-woltz-hudson-yards-park-expansion/
April 1, 20196 yr ^^ Great pics posted earlier-you have a good eye for showing things off for the best. The Vessel looked pretty good-love the elevator. If rich people need a place to live and work, well it is better that it is going in over railyards and not displacing anything really. I like the idea of a skating rink in winter. Kind of reminds me of Rockefeller Center with the skating and the Xmas tree-the Vessel kind of reminds me of a high tech inverted Xmas tree as well. What are the lighting schemes for the Vessel? I also know that the northwestern part of the diagram is part of Javits Center-are they planning anything for that parcel they own? Also looks like there is a lot of underutilized property north along 11th. I guess that will go/is going highrise too? *The people in the pics you took do look sort of like "rendering people" other than that they are dressed for colder weather and maybe in a bit darker clothing. Hardly a fattie in the bunch! lol. Edited April 1, 20196 yr by Toddguy
April 7, 20196 yr ^ yes there are plenty of plans for the area to the north in front of the javits convention center -- stay tuned! btw that area is also the hudson yards. many people have been understandably confusing hudson yards (the decked over rail yard) with hudson yards (the greater neighborhood), which includes the new park and all of the area you are referring to. this neighborhood was basically the last major tabla rasa in manhattan. its funny but i could never understand why something...anything...was never built across the street from the javits over all the years, like some mini mall or strip plaza of chain restaurants, but it never happened. of course thats for the better now that the neighborhood is such a hot development area.
April 7, 20196 yr i went to the opening of the shed performance hall yesterday and then back later in the afternoon for a performance. its like 9 levels inside of various venues and galleries. and it can be rolled in for outdoor performances, so that will be something to see in the summer. unfortunately there is frit on the glass to block the glare if you know your big shot arts people this is curator hans ulrich obrist, harvard art historian benjamin buchloh and composer steve reich there were a scrum of germans there, not sure if gerhard richter himself was, but the art work is his. August 21, 20195 yr Was at Hudson Yards for the first time last week. For me it still feels a little too new and shiny in a quickly-built-Chinese-second-tier-City way. I know it’s built better than that though, so am hopeful it will age well. We both thought the Vessel was both ugly and utterly pointless. Edited August 21, 20195 yr by roman totale XVII My hovercraft is full of eels
August 28, 20195 yr geez i can see sterile, but quickly built? its the opposite of that. chinese construction is built on fields and hy was built on a decked over open railyard, so it couldn’t be more different. also, the quality of the materials of many of those hy buildings is top shelf. otoh the vessel is the vessel. im indifferent. i liked the views though, did you go up in it? its still very popular, so people must like it. i have no idea how the mall is doing, its full of mostly ridiculously expensive shops and restaurants. i wonder what will happen to that over time? same fate as any mall i would guess. its all still a work in progress, so we will see. on a positive note, the observation deck that opens next year should be a good one, so thats something to look forward to, as is the western railyard development and the surrounding wider hy neighborhood developments.

September 26, 20195 yr ^ those aren't apartment buildings, they are office buildings, a hotel and a train station. eventually when its built out the western yards will be mostly residential.

There are apartments/condos adjacent to Hudson yards. That is what I'm referring to. Related built a ton of residential surrounding the development.
September 27, 20195 yr ^ i still can't tell what buildings you are referring to, you can't just say? there are quite a few apartments within hudson yards: - the decked over apartments around the vessel and the mall being developed by related and oxford - more still in manhattan west, which is also a decked over part of the hudson yards and being developed by brookfield - and then many, many more in the 'adjacent' or surrounding greater hudson yards neighborhood by a variety of developers so its confusing, but there are so many apartments around there now and yet to come of all stripes no one can keep up with all of this.

January 8, 20205 yr On 9/22/2019 at 8:45 AM, mrnyc said: i walked by the base of 1 manhattan west recently — up close it looks very top shelf quality. 1 Manhattan Square is a seriously underrated office tower. It's incredibly simple without being a basic box. The rounded corners, subtle taper, and beautiful base/lobby really make it stand out in a crowded market of "just okay" office towers in the immediate area. It has a quality to it in person that the others in Hudson Yards don't. Hudson Yards' most prominent office towers, 10 and 30 HY by KPF, seem to have taken the same approach that Honda and Toyota take with their cars these days. They don't know when to put the pencil down and reduce. They just keep adding and adding. I don't hate 10 and 30, but they don't have the elegance of Manhattan Square. When 2 Manhattan Square is finished the scale and relationship is going to evoke aspects of the original World Trade Center but does it in a way that isn't, well, horrible to the pedestrian experience.
January 8, 20205 yr ^ its very graceful. i cannot wait for the courtyard to open so you can walk around it, but that will have to wait while they build its twin. speaking of graceful and for something a little different -- snohetta is renovating a midtown courtyard at philip johnson and john burgee's 550 madison. https://www.6sqft.com/snohettas-transformed-public-space-at-550-madison-avenue-will-bring-a-much-needed-oasis-to-midtown/
January 16, 20205 yr 3 hudson blvd aka the girasole is back in play after being a stagnant hole in the ground for a long time. its bumped up to around 1000' now, so its the newest supertall. it will have glass that changes tints during the day, otherwise kind of a boring office building from the renders. https://nypost.com/2020/01/15/look-inside-3-hudson-boulevard-hudson-yards-next-office-tower/
February 11, 20205 yr i dont think i posted anything about this, but with cuomo's actions redeveloping in and around penn, and some uncertainty with future plans with that, the decking construction over the western hudson yards is delayed. i'm sure the developer related will keep pushing hard though, because i heard that is the section where they will finally get out of the red on the massive undertaking and actually make money on hudson yards. Second phase of Related’s Hudson Yards development stalled by LIRR POSTED ON FRI, AUGUST 9, 2019 BY DEVIN GANNON While the reason for the delay is not clear, a source told the Post that “Related pushes them every week,” to approve the project’s plans. “LIRR and MTA are working with Related to help them develop a design that satisfies their obligation to preserve life-safety and operational flexibility for the LIRR at Hudson Yards,” a representative with the MTA told the Post. The next phase, which involves the area from 11th to 12th Avenues between West 30th and West 33rd Streets, includes bringing six new buildings that will offer space for apartments, office space, and retail. The project, expected to be completed by 2024, also includes a K-8 school. https://www.6sqft.com/second-phase-of-relateds-hudson-yards-development-stalled-by-lirr/

June 26, 20204 yr yeah it sure is. i think the actual bulding designs are just placeholder ideas for now and are unknown. for example, here is another: below is the actual site plan, which i do not think has changed. and yes that is another cantilever building over the highline on the sw corner, that should be interesting. of course nothing is going to happen with phase two until amtrak/lirr allows it. i heard related was asking like once a week, but there is no movement on it for now. maybe the new penn south may help move it along, i dk. more: https://therealdeal.com/2019/12/27/related-no-longer-giving-timetable-for-finishing-hudson-yards/

November 6, 20204 yr a render of the apparantly white zoomer focused office conversion of the former neiman marcus mega department store -- that went bust in the hy mall:
November 9, 20204 yr Well that was fast. Went to The Edge this past weekend. Mall was super eerily empty. The Edge is pretty cool though. Most observation decks are more or less the same, but being so far separated from the rest of Midtown offers a pretty cool perspective where you can see all the other landmarks quite clearly. Not worth $32 necessarily, but still fun to do with friends in town.
