November 28, 20177 yr the triangle building is called via 57 by bjarke ingels --- and yeah its both striking and a goofy out of place dubai type building. however, all in all its definately adding to manhattan, a mish-mash of varied structures from very different eras like no other place. as for hy and the rest of these waterfront buildings blocking things for nj viewers, in five years they won't matter because a slew of supertalls are underway or planned, so there will be a new higher level of iconic structures behind all of them. and i wouldn't worry about the classics, the esb will always be the esb. btw the mini-hudson yards like development you can see going up just north of the triangle building in the photo is called waterline square. its three apt buildings by 3 different architects, so even more mix&match mish-mash.
November 28, 20177 yr I walked around Hudson Yards for the first time a few weeks ago. I hated it. I thought I had been transported to downtown Houston on a Sunday afternoon (not that I've ever been there) or to the waterfront section of Toronto where tons of new development, but essentially soulless, is being built. It was awful. Even when lots of people start working there it's just going to look like a slightly less bland skyscraper version of a suburban office park. Look at these (presumably) tourists in the picture. They're probably saying to themselves "we wasted an hour walking all this way to look at this?!" http://www.mainstreetpainesville.org/
November 28, 20177 yr what's to hate or like? its a construction site. the west side development of it is years away.
November 29, 20177 yr ^^I'm surprised that's your reaction. I think it looks gorgeous, a complete rebirth of Western Manhattan with unlimited potential. Old meets new with the trains disappearing under those behemoths. Look up Lakeshore East in Chicago. Pretty similar to Hudson Yards and an absolute treasure for the city.
November 29, 20177 yr I 100% agree about HY obscuring Empire and Chrysler from the west. Particularly Chrysler. I do like the project but NY's skyline does feel a little less iconic than it did 15 years ago. I don't think the tall thin condos just north of the commercial center of Midtown/Times Square are helping either. You can throw in the new WTC buildings as well. I know the old one's were just giant boxes but they looked impressive. The new WTC buidlings are tall but their volume seems smaller when you see it from a distance compared to the old WTC. Yeah the new Freedom Tower is a yawn. The old WTC duo was much more impressive and the way they were offset created all sorts of subtle variations. For longtime New Yorkers, the WTC towers threw everything off-balance but if you grew up with them they were just part of it. When they were gone, the Empire State Building was once again the tallest building. Now there a half-dozen buildings as tall or taller, none of which are iconic.
November 29, 20177 yr That's definitely an objectively false statement. Currently the only buildings as tall or taller than the ESB are 1 WTC (which is indeed a bit of a snooze), 432 Park which is iconic whether you like it or not, and the Bank of America Tower which is pretty distinctive for 21st century corporate architecture. And coming we have 111W57th which will be stunningly gorgeous, 30HY which you incorrectly claimed leans (it tapers, zero leaning occurs in Hudson Yards), Central Park Tower (renderings aren't quite detailed enough to really know how it'll turn out), One Vanderbilt which will very likely become an icon of East Midtown, 2WTC which has always had the most polarizing designs but is still a mystery as to what will really be built, and 45 Broad Street which will very well likely become a distinctive piece of Lower Manhattan. Several of these new buildings employ super high end finishes, design aesthetics, structure, etc. and are absolutely going to be icons. In 20 years people will absolutely look at some of them as icons. The old WTC may have had more of an overbearing presence, but that's because they literally tore down an entire functioning neighborhood to build a really terrible series of buildings and plaza. The WTC employed every bad idea from the new urbanism phase of the 60s. They may have looked interesting on the skyline but were awful buildings and sucked the life out of a corner of Lower Manhattan that used to be diverse neighborhood. The new complex doesn't have the most interesting towers in the world, but the site planning is where it excels and its integration of the transit hub into the area is what is most iconic about it. It's switching from an idea of a powerful skyline to a powerful site plan which is far more important to the operations of a city.
November 29, 20177 yr while it may not impress from a distance as the twins did, the new wtc, or freedom tower or 1wtc, if you have ever been next to it or inside it, is indeed iconic in its materials. for example, i dont think ive ever seen higher quality glass, its stunning. there are supertalls at hy on the way that will stand out behind the waterfront bldgs, like 50hy and the spiral. we will see how striking they are, but regardless in the end the hy area is sure to be more of a typical manhattan mix. and as for more icons dont forget 9 dekalb in brooklyn, as gothic a supertall as there ever could be if the renders hold up. on the jersey side, 99 hudson is an absolute behemoth, i dont think people realize whats coming lol. it will be tallest in jc. as for the jenga building, its called urby and two more are supposedly on the way. i think three of them will be pretty iconic. and lastly, dont forget all the other 1000’ers planned or on the way. for example, while i dont have high hopes for the russian fifth ave apt bldg, i do for the 1400’+ 80 south st down at the seaport. the point is that the city is always changing and currently construction permitting is running at an all time high, so its inevitable new icons and new mini-city developments like hy and lic and the like shake out along the way. if you are just plain impatient and want to see something new and unusual, if not iconic right now, check out the domino sugar plant redevelopent.
December 3, 20177 yr i forgot to add the vessel is officially topped out now, it should open in 2018.
January 23, 20187 yr stunning aerial drone video of the westside and the hy: this is a screenshot of the vessel and culture shed
March 10, 20187 yr i think some people into planning will enjoy this long video. developer stephen ross talks about hudson yards and takes questions from harvard architecture students. they really brought up basic issues, like why he chose the tower forms over other possibilities. he is very straightforward about it all.
April 19, 20187 yr if you are so inclined, this is a pretty cool existential takedown of hudson yards! Superhuman City Hudson Yards, a mega-neighborhood built from scratch, comes into view. By Justin Davidson Related hired a bouquet of architects as a hedge against corporate uniformity. Then it imposed corporate uniformity on them all. more: http://nymag.com/daily/intelligencer/2018/04/superhuman-city-a-walk-through-hudson-yards.html
May 16, 20187 yr excavation work has wrapped and foundation work is starting on the norman foster 50 hy. people sometimes complain about gentrification, but this block buster is literally replacing a drive thru mcdonalds lol: Spanning an entire city block, 50 Hudson Yards will be the fourth largest commercial office tower and the most expensive one in New York City upon completion. Its total cost is expected to be just shy of $4 billion. Once complete, the 985-foot tall structure will yield 2.9 million square feet within. The building has already secured one anchor tenant, with BlackRock agreeing to lease 850,000 square feet. more: https://newyorkyimby.com/2018/05/excavation-wraps-for-foster-partners-50-hudson-yards-as-foundation-work-begins.html
May 16, 20187 yr also of note in the above link -- i had heard phase two aka the western yards decking may start this year: 50 Hudson Yards is the final tower to rise in Related Companies’ phase one of Hudson Yards. Phase Two, as known as The Western Yards, will be located across the several blocks between 11th and 12th Avenue. The seven-building development will create residential space, one office complex, and a school for K-8th grade education. Of the 6.22 million square feet created, two million square feet will be office, four million will be for residential use, 100,000 square feet will be retail, and 120,000 square feet will be for the school. trouble ahead for the western yards? The 50 hy lot has been in the news lately because of a dispute between Related Co. and the Building and Construction Trades Council of Greater New York. The tension has risen following the proposal to use “open shop” crews for phase two, according to The Real Deal. hy master plan
June 21, 20186 yr eater has this article on hudson yards for foodies — all you need to know: https://ny.eater.com/2018/3/12/17097606/hudson-yards-restaurants-nyc-guide seems like everything is supposed to open at once in march 2019
July 18, 20186 yr Looks like it belongs in Houston! mw is still u/c, but already its way too tall/massive and the glass is too quality for anything houston would need. also, its literally built over an active transit railyard, which is the opposite of sprawly texas.
July 18, 20186 yr speaking of tall and massive, this is the biggest tower inside the hy site — its 30hy aka the north tower
July 18, 20186 yr ^ good question. various performance events i guess? it opens spring 2019. keep an eye out here for more info: https://theshed.org/
July 18, 20186 yr this is hy area news this week — a hotel will go directly in front of the javits center at 11av/w37st. not sure anyone will miss that check cashing place on the ridiculously underused scrubby site lol. https://ny.curbed.com/2018/7/17/17582728/nyc-hotel-hudson-yards-javits-center-450-eleventh
July 25, 20186 yr In that picture there's what, 2 buildings that existed a handful of years ago? Both in the lower right. To think there's still so much more to come out of the Hudson Yards and Hudson Boulevard area.
August 2, 20186 yr its not all for the richy rich — the city has rfp’s out for two major city owned sites next to the hudson yards which must be developed w/100% affordable housing: http://rew-online.com/2018/04/25/city-issues-rfp-hudson-yards-development-sites/
August 6, 20186 yr I don't like this glass modern architecture. It's so mundane, the only originality in the structure is the shape it takes on. The facades don't tell any kind of a story.
August 6, 20186 yr That's not really true though in person. 10 and 30 are fully blue glass (which I'll get to below) but the rest each do something with their facade to differentiate them beyond just form. 15 Hudson Yards has a differentiation in the facade treatment that transitions with the interior usage as well as notates which area the culture shed will be accepted when fully closed. 35 Hudson Yards has a gradient of glass and stone that becomes more glassy at the top. 55 Hudson Yards has a really nice black steel framing detail to its windows that becomes more clear and appreciable as you get closer to the building. The two fully blue glass buildings, 10 and 30, have a variety of glazing treatments, the most noteworthy of which looks like the scales of some sort of reptile up close. In the next phase we'll continue to get new buildings by different architects. I'm not saying the towers in Hudson Yards are the greatest ever, but they're definitely not mundane or all the same. Each one does feature something unique, albeit often subtle, through its facade.
August 12, 20186 yr I don't like this glass modern architecture. It's so mundane, the only originality in the structure is the shape it takes on. The facades don't tell any kind of a story. there is nothing mundane or unoriginal with the base of 10hy aka the coach tower, that is for sure. its the most unusual i have ever noticed. its bi-level with main entrances both on the ground and at the elevated highline park level inside what is now temporarily its own courtyard. it also straddles over the soon to open highline park stub. i mean, how many towers are built over a railyard with multilevel entrances and an elevated city park running right through them? quite a design, engineering and construction feat and quite unusual!
January 13, 20196 yr Hudson Yards multidisciplinary arts center sets opening date The Shed will debut on April 5 with several notable commissions By Amy Plitt@plitter Jan 9, 2019, 9:30am EST Big things are happening at Hudson Yards this year: By the end of March, many of its public amenities—the shopping center, a bunch of restaurants, a public park, and Thomas Heatherwick’s Vessel—will debut, bringing the long under-construction parcel of land on the west side to life. And now, the megaproject’s cultural center, the Shed, is getting ready for its close-up; the venue announced today that it will open on April 5. more: https://ny.curbed.com/2019/1/9/18175164/hudson-yards-new-york-the-shed-opening-date
January 13, 20196 yr Hudson Yards: A timeline of the megaproject’s biggest buildings Checking in on the ambitious, multi-billion dollar megaproject By Ameena Walker and Amy Plitt Updated Jan 9, 2019, 2:38pm EST In the decade-plus since the 2005 rezoning that created the Hudson Yards Special District, the area within its borders has become a neighborhood transformed. Though many developments have capitalized on the rebranding of the neighborhood, the megaproject known as Hudson Yards officially sits atop the rail yards roughly bounded by 10th and 11th avenues, and 30th and 34th streets. This particular parcel, developed by Related Companies and Oxford Properties Group, is now giving rise to supertall towers, high-end apartments, new parkland, and more. While the entire Hudson Yards project still has a long way to go before it’s actually a neighborhood—construction on the West Side rail yards has yet to even commence—the ambitious, multi-billion dollar project has made plenty of progress. On March 15, 2019, all of the restaurants and food halls are expected to open, along with a host of high-end stores and the project’s new public park. more: https://ny.curbed.com/2018/4/4/17115600/hudson-yards-construction-timeline-building-status-nyc
January 13, 20196 yr mock ups for 509 w34st aka the spiral from rob harper's insta -- the pit for the spiral -- the foreground pit is for related's norman foster 50 hy (1,011') pit work and just recently, the crane going up render from developer tishman speyer (1,032') Edited January 22, 20196 yr by mrnyc
January 22, 20196 yr topping off the tallest hy bldg so far -- 30 hy (1,268') and all about the observation deck -- opening in march:
March 15, 20196 yr at last the decked over 28 acre eastern railyards portion of the hudson yards neighborhood opens today. the $25B mega site is the largest private real estate development in usa history. here is a stunning 6 year long time lapse of the build out: https://nypost.com/2019/03/15/stunning-video-shows-the-birth-of-hudson-yards/
March 15, 20196 yr NYC is on a whole other level of construction. It's absolutely thrilling to watch!
March 16, 20196 yr for opening day yesterday i walked around after work. i came from grand central and it was strange to be on the 7 train at the last stop with lots of people on it as normally no one goes to hy. well thats about to change lol. then getting out it was weird to see the construction fencing down and all the openness after so long. its not often a whole neighborhood opens up in a day. it was stunning to see the towers up close and the vessel thing is just enormous, much larger than i thought and it looks just stunning up close. the mall is a mall, but it has what i believe these days they call a nicely 'curated' variety of high end shops and restaurants. who know how well it will do, but you can't say they didn't try. there were dj's and flash mob dance performances inside and out and all in all it was quite a nice opening day celebration. if you go, for right now there is nothing to do but look around or go in the new mall. the towers are still u/c and the shed performance center the observation deck are not open quite yet. the shed opens next month with performances. not sure when the observation platform opens, but i saw you can access it inside the mall. you will need to sign up for free timed tix to walk up on the vessel for a while they said so they can control the crowds. after a look around i walked home on the highline. walking away i saw a large line on the street below the coach tower for what is supposed to be the spain version of eataly called mercado little spain.
March 16, 20196 yr On 7/25/2018 at 4:09 PM, mrnyc said: i took this one yesterday and oh boy i gotta share — yeoow! Tell me more about the Jetsons-looking building in the front. All it needs is to be on very tall stilts and it would fit right in the show. I like Hudson Yards-such a good idea to develop this over all those tracks.
March 16, 20196 yr 4 hours ago, mrnyc said: and my instas did you go to the top of the Vessel? I'm experiencing vertigo just looking at it. Have they taken precautions to prevent those with suicidal tendencies from jumping off? You know that's going to happen sooner or later. http://www.mainstreetpainesville.org/
March 17, 20196 yr I hate to say it, but the top tier of The Vessel appears to be an ideal place for suicides.
March 18, 20196 yr ^ i know right? its worrying looking. i got tix to go up next week so we will see how easy or hard it is to climb on or how safe. btw the jetsons bldg is an apt bldg along the highline by zaha hadid.
March 18, 20196 yr I can't wait to visit the Vessel. NYC really hit a home run there, it's going to be an epic tourist destination.
