Posted February 2, 200619 yr What I want to know is why hasn't Cincinnati hosted MLB All-Star game yet? We have a new stadium, pretty much all the other cities with new stadiums have hosted one.
February 2, 200619 yr cincybearcat, I have broken this out into its own thread. This is a good question, why hasn't Cincinnati hosted an All-Star game since Great American Ballpark has been built?
February 2, 200619 yr I presume due to the city waiting till the Banks and Fountain Square are somewhat done. "You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers
February 3, 200619 yr ^ Yeah, but get the bid in now, so we don't have to wait 10 years to get one. GAB won't be new anymore.
February 3, 200619 yr unusual has a point, if Cincinnati gets a date I am sure that would put pressure on the county & city to move quicker on the Banks. Although I just want a quality urban development. I would like to think the new ownership will address this topic.
February 3, 200619 yr Cincinnati has hosted the MLB All-Star game in 1988, 1970, 1953, 1938 http://sports.espn.go.com/mlbhist/alltime/allstargames http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MLB_All-Star_Game 2006 will be in Pittsburgh 2007 will be in San Francisco Among the cities in the running for 2008's All-Star Game are Anaheim (whose stadium was so completely transformed in the late '90s and early 2000s that some people almost consider it a whole new entity), Tampa Bay, Minnesota Twins, and Toronto Blue Jays. Comissioner Selig said during the 2005 All-Star Break that the 2008 game will definitely go to an American League city. His statement would put the cities of Phoenix, Washington, Cincinnati, St. Louis, and San Diego in position for a run at the 2009 All-Star Game.
February 4, 200619 yr LA would seem to be soon, because they have not had any since 1980. wow Anaheim hosted the year after Cincy. Dodger Stadium hasn't hosted since 1980 just...because.
July 11, 200618 yr Reds want All-Star game Cardinals' new stadium may have edge for '09 BY JOHN ERARDI | ENQUIRER STAFF WRITER The Cincinnati Reds plan to join the hunt to host an All-Star game. Reds chief operating officer John Allen said the team is putting out feelers for a 2009 bid. Allen is in Pittsburgh this week for the All-Star break and is visiting informally with Major League Baseball officials to gauge their interest in Cincinnati. Baseball likes to showcase its new ballparks, which is good and bad for Cincinnati. It's good because Great American Ball Park opened in 2003. It's bad because several other National League teams have opened, or are preparing to open, new parks. More at http://news.enquirer.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060711/SPT04/607110363
July 11, 200618 yr Cincinnati has hosted the MLB All-Star game in 1988, 1970, 1953, 1938 http://sports.espn.go.com/mlbhist/alltime/allstargames http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MLB_All-Star_Game 2006 will be in Pittsburgh 2007 will be in San Francisco I think the American League and the National League take turns each year ... no?
July 11, 200618 yr I don't know if I would want the All-Star Game to be here without the Banks being completed. The same thing would go for any kind of national/international event (but then again I wouldn't be upset if something of that magnitude were to want to come here).
July 12, 200618 yr ^ Yeah that area needs to be filled in with something. It would look hideous to some visitors.
July 12, 200618 yr The only way it would work is if the Banks became the site of a massive, outdoor, All-Star-related festival.
July 13, 200618 yr What needs to happen is this, Wal-Mart builds a SuperCenter between the Underground Railroad Museum and the ballpark. Then for events such as this, there will be plenty of room in the wonderful parking lots that Wal-Mart is known for creating.
July 14, 200618 yr My thought is that as long as construction has started and we have huge renderings on display everywhere around the site, the Banks not being completed wouldn't be a terrible thing. Seeing construction around a city always brings up my image of it.
July 14, 200618 yr ^I agree....a shitton of construction would show a massive investment in the urban core. It would show that there is life and promise for a midwestern cities (often times looked at in a bad light). Get some cranes up and going and then I cant wait to start taking skyline pictures that are filled with cranes. Who knows, by then QCS II could be under construction as well!
April 17, 200718 yr From the Reds Mailbag http://cincinnati.reds.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20070416&content_id=1904585&vkey=news_cin&fext=.jsp&c_id=cin When is Great American Ball Park going to get a shot at the All-Star Game? It seems like when a team gets a new park it gets the All Star Game. When is it our turn? -- Bob M. As it looks now, Cincinnati has no chance to land the All-Star Game until 2011 -- at the earliest. After San Francisco this year, MLB will return to alternating between National and American League locations. With so many new facilities in the league now, newness isn't an overriding criteria anymore. The 2008 game will be at Yankee Stadium in that historic park's final season. In 2009, it will be at St. Louis. It's back to the AL in 2010. Last week in Arizona, Commissioner Bud Selig said that Cincinnati would be considered for getting another Midsummer Classic at some point. The last time Cincinnati hosted the All-Star Game was 1988 at Riverfront Stadium. It's a long time, yes, but other cities have gone even longer.
April 18, 200718 yr Like I said before...I can wait for that. By 2011 the Central Riverfront Park will be just about complete, and most likely the majority of The Banks. This will look fantastic to outsiders when they come for the All-Star Game! I say go ahead and wait until 2012 and really blow the pants off of those who haven't been to Cincy in awhile...let them see the progress that has been made!
April 14, 200916 yr Reds pursue All-Star Game The Reds are pursuing an All-Star date for 2013, Karen Forgus, the club’s senior vice president of business operations, said on Monday. “We’re pushing hard on it,” Forgus said. “We’re actively pursuing it.” Forgus said the team’s desire to host an All-Star Game is one reason it sought the Civil Rights Game, which will be played June 20 against the Chicago White Sox at Great American Ball Park. April 14, 200916 yr Reds pursue All-Star Game http://news.cincinnati.com/article/20090413/SPT04/304130065/1055/NEWS The Reds are pursuing an All-Star date for 2013, Karen Forgus, the club’s senior vice president of business operations, said on Monday. “We’re pushing hard on it,” Forgus said. “We’re actively pursuing it.” Forgus said the team’s desire to host an All-Star Game is one reason it sought the Civil Rights Game, which will be played June 20 against the Chicago White Sox at Great American Ball Park. Henry Aaron, Muhammad Ali and Bill Cosby are scheduled to be in town that weekend to accept awards. President Obama has also been invited. “We want to illustrate how great of a city Cincinnati is,” Forgus said. She said hosting the Civil Rights Game will not preclude Cincinnati from an All-Star date. The Reds last hosted the All-Star Game in 1988. The city has hosted four games in all. The game alternates between American League and National League cities every year. St. Louis is hosting this year. With Arizona getting the next National League date in 2011, Cincinnati’s next three chances are 2013, 2015 and 2017. Forgus said the team has done mock time lines to check the availability of venues such as Duke Energy Center as it targets prospective years. She added that Bob Castellini, the Reds president and chief executive officer, is also lobbying MLB commissioner Bud Selig. “If they come here, they’ll be the event in town,” Forgus said. “We can do things on both sides of the river. We’ll bring riverboats in. We’ll go all out.” I will shit my pants if we land an all-star game. It's been TOO long.
April 14, 200916 yr I saw this on the news earlier and was happy about it. An All-Star game in 2013 would be great.
April 14, 200916 yr I will sh!t my pants if we land an all-star game. It's been TOO long. Start stocking up on the Charmin! ;-) "It's just fate, as usual, keeping its bargain and screwing us in the fine print..." - John Crichton
April 14, 200916 yr Was at the '88 events - Homerun Derby and the like. Sadly it rained. It was a big part of the Bicentennial festivities. I think Cincy can do this well and by '13, Roebling Point should be quite a ways along. Maybe we can host a few playoff games before then.
April 14, 200916 yr I will sh!t my pants if we land an all-star game. It's been TOO long. Start stocking up on the Charmin! ;-) Charmin? Hell, get Depends!!!
July 15, 201212 yr You heard me. "Like" this page on Facebook to help make it happen: https://www.facebook.com/BringTheAllStarGameToCincinnatiIn2015
July 16, 201212 yr thanks for posting this. Castellini wants it in 2015 but some are saying 2019 is Cincy's year.
July 23, 201212 yr wait, isnt there an automatic rotation for this? i think there is, although i think it gets tweaked sometimes when new ballparks open.
July 23, 201212 yr ^2015 is available to the National League (Cincinnati Reds). I say wait until 2019 to host the ASG in Cincinnati. 1869 is the birth of the Cincinnati Red Stockings and Major League Baseball. For this reason, I think Cincinnati should host the ASG on the 150th anniversary of professional baseball/Reds. I would be more than happy to host it in 2015, but I think 2019 would be more symbolic
July 23, 201212 yr The sooner the better or wait until 2022. I wouldn't want everyone in town while the bridge and I-75 is being worked on.
January 22, 201312 yr http://news.cincinnati.com/apps/pbcs.dll/artikkel?&Dato=20130121&Kategori=SPT1101&Lopenr=301210147&Ref=AR Great news for the City to bring some national attention and spot light to the happenings in and around Cincinnati. Between the Banks, new hotels, and OTR revitilization there will be a lot to show off by mid-2015. Reds ownership showing their commitment to the city and pushing to be back in the spotlight. I woner what kind of economic impact is generated by such an event?
January 22, 201312 yr From the Kansas City Star: "Estimates suggest All-Star Week generates anywhere from $60 million to $90 million in revenue for the host city along with harder-to-measure benefits in terms of worldwide publicity, civic pride and general good will." http://www.kansascity.com/2012/07/02/3688078/seligs-promise-of-an-all-star.html
January 22, 201312 yr Compile list of "projects that need to be done" by July, 2015 here. The cage liner had an article speculating what Cincy will look like. We have 30 months folks! Banks - Phase 2, (3, etc.) Banks Office Tower and Hotel Riverfront Park Streetcar Fountain Place Condos Casino Hotel (EDIT: NM, can't build before 2016) What else am I missing?
January 22, 201312 yr Considering it's just 2.5 years away, nothing that isn't already in motion is likely to magically appear. More OTR development is something you might include. Mercer Commons will be complete, as well as some smaller projects.
January 22, 201312 yr What are the fountain place Condos? http://www.bizjournals.com/cincinnati/news/2012/11/26/developers-look-to-keep-macys-store.html?page=all
January 22, 201312 yr I rather have everything done right instead of rushing before the All-Star game.
January 22, 201312 yr What are the fountain place Condos? http://www.bizjournals.com/cincinnati/news/2012/11/26/developers-look-to-keep-macys-store.html?page=all soo apartments.
January 22, 201312 yr Banks Hotel, Streetcar, and more of the Riverfront Park are the top of my list. These are the most noticeable projects that will make Cincinnati look best in the national spotlight. Apartments, condos, and office towers are at the bottom of my list in terms of importance for the All Star Game. More shops/restaurants at The Banks would be nice too, but I think the hotel is the most realistic and the most important.
January 23, 201312 yr Having the streetcar open by July 2015 should be a top priority. Connecting the Banks, Ftn Sqr, OTR, Washington Park and Findlay Market would multiply the effect of the ASL.
January 24, 201312 yr It's not going to happen unless Duke speeds up dramatically. I just read the bid document the enquirer had posted. Read the schedule part, it's clear Duke is the entire hold up.
January 24, 201312 yr It's not going to happen unless Duke speeds up dramatically. I just read the bid document the enquirer had posted. Read the schedule part, it's clear Duke is the entire hold up. So how long will Cincinnati's progress be held up by Duke? Will we keep accepting excuses ad infinitum?
January 25, 201312 yr ^ Do you have another option? Atlanta is rumored to be delaying their streetcar another year due to slow progress from the utility.
January 25, 201312 yr It blows my mind why Phase 2 of the Banks hasn't started yet. What the hell are they waiting for!!!!!
June 18, 201410 yr BIG Event with BIG money just about a year away maybe time to talk about preperations that will take place over the next year, including security, transportation, ticket prices, national media coverage and everything else!!
June 18, 201410 yr Am I wrong for feeling like this may cut down on the "fun" factor??? I think street vendors are so important in creating a festive vibe. www.cincinnati.com/story/sports/mlb/2014/06/17/star-game-prompts-vendor-restrictions/10686623/
June 18, 201410 yr I don't think it's that big of a deal. Vendors can still camp out north of Fifth Street on Main, on all of the bridges from Kentucky, and near Fountain Square. I'm sure they will shut down the streets in The Banks and host some pretty cool events. Street vendors will still be allowed to sell in the restricted zone if they only sell peanuts, water, and other food items. Just no memorabilia.
