1900 population ~10,000

1950 population ~74,000

Today the population is quite a bit more, but it really isn't relevant to the downtown size, so I'm just using the 1900/1950 numbers for NC cities. Currently the third largest in North Carolina.

Has an historical marker sign that said Vicks Vaporub was invented 150 yards north of the sign.

In a region big on textile manufacturing.

Probably what Charlotte looked like before they mostly razed it for the craptastic stuff they have now.

Lived here for 7 years.  Very comfortable...... seriously, I can't think of a better way to describe it.  Unfortunately, like the rest of the South, it is still very segregated.  One side of downtown had predominantly black colleges (A&T and Bennet) while the other side had predominantly white colleges (UNCG, Greensboro College, and Guilford College).  What was great about living there during my school years is the amount of college students within an hour drive or less with the schools mentioned above + Elon, WSSU, Wake Forest, Duke, UNC-Chappel Hill, UNCC, NC St., and more I'm surely forgetting.  Also, it was great to be within a few hour drive of either the ocean or the mountains....... and, most importantly, just a 7 hr trip up 77 to go HOME

Anyone know or care to guess the historical significance of the Woolworth store shown above?

I'll just sit-in wait for the response :).
