January 8, 201411 yr Is he one of ours? Portune lives in Hamilton County's Green Township which is a hotbed of GOP corruption, paranoia & racism. He might very well be a mole. Might not. Dimora's town went 58% Romney in 2012, Russo's 65%. Are those Cuyahoga County commissioners?

January 18, 201411 yr headline kinda says it all Todd Portune's improbable dream http://news.cincinnati.com/article/20140117/NEWS0108/301170120/Todd-Portune-s-improbable-dream
January 19, 201411 yr As 2013 drew to a close, Gov. John Kasich crowned his beloved JobsOhio program “the most important economic development tool in America.” Kasich must know something that more than 11 million other Ohioans do not. Because, by any measure imaginable, 2013 was a year in which the JobsOhio results didn’t remotely match the rhetoric. With its rocky rookie season behind it, last year was supposed to be when JobsOhio arrived, when it blossomed into the job-producing economic juggernaut its champions promised. * * * * * The December figures are scheduled for release Friday. But through November 2013, here is Ohio’s monthly job-creation ranking among the 50 states: January - 43, February - 41, March- 48, April - 47, May - 43, June - 46, July - 45, August - 44, September - 42, October - 45, November - 46. http://www.cleveland.com/opinion/index.ssf/2014/01/dismal_numbers_on_ohio_job_gro.html#incart_river The comments section to this article is priceless! Answered many of my questions about how these poor results would be spun.
January 28, 201411 yr This was getting way off topic earlier, so I created a new one for that tangent everyone was going on about how public education may or may not be ruining the next generation.
February 2, 201411 yr In the biggest non story of the political season Todd Portune withdraws from the governor's race http://cincinnati.com/blogs/politics/2014/02/01/statement-why-todd-portune-didnt-run-for-governor/

August 6, 201410 yr We may never know exactly what happened between FitzGerald and a woman who was not his wife, at 4:30 in the morning, in the parking lot of an industrial complex in Westlake. What we do know is that women are far more likely to abandon FitzGerald over the issue than men. I'd like to see a cite for that comment. And the ship just keeps sinking... http://www.cleveland.com/opinion/index.ssf/2014/08/ed_fitzgeralds_campaign_is_ove.html#incart_opinion
August 6, 201410 yr It's an opinion piece, I'd take it with a grain of salt. My opinion? If he has any sense of decency, FitzGerald should man up and withdraw from the race. From Philip Morris' column today: "How else does a man who seeks the job that would give him sweeping control of state government, including oversight of the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles, flout the BMV’s own rules? How is it that a man, who served as mayor of Lakewood and now executive of Cuyahoga County not find it necessary to follow the simplest rules of the road (a valid adult driver’s license), while plotting to gain control of the Ohio Department of Public Safety in the fall election?" August 6, 201410 yr This is all very disturbing. It's ridiculous that a guy of Fitzgerald's stature and ambition could be so stupid. Yet I would still prefer him to be governor than Kasich, who is contemptuous of ordinary Ohioans and whose economic development strategy consists of giving state resources to large corporations -- and who for four years has been given a free pass by a fawning and compliant press.
August 6, 201410 yr I'm seeing a lot of dirty minds. The drivers license thing? beats me. Michael Badnarik proudly refused to get a license in Texas, but I doubt that's why he lost his presidential bid.
August 6, 201410 yr He's not going to drop out of the race. It's three months away. That doesn't mean he is going to be competitive. Kasich has laid low since the whole union busting fiasco 2 or 3 years ago. He expanded Medicaid against the wishes of the state legislature. He is going to win November.

For whatever reason it really surprises me that Fitzgerald would do something like this. Sheesh, get a hotel room already. I'm wondering how the Kasich team even plays this up come election time.... if they need to.
August 6, 201410 yr for four years [Kasich] has been given a free pass by a fawning and compliant press. No Republican ever gets a "fawning and compliant press." They have a small, vocal minority of the national media landscape as ideologically sympathetic (Fox News, much of talk radio), but it's extremely rare to see a local outlet with anything approaching Republican default assumptions about government and politics (or economics or culture, for that matter). Kasich has been able to avoid open warfare with the mainstream press; that's about as good as a state or local Republican can do.
August 6, 201410 yr I don't see the problem with the fact he did not have a license. He lives in the city, he can use public transportation.
August 6, 201410 yr I don't see the problem with the fact he did not have a license. He lives in the city, he can use public transportation. I don't think the fact he did not have a driver's license is the problem - it is the fact that he continued to drive....for 4 years without one.
August 6, 201410 yr I don't see the problem with the fact he did not have a license. He lives in the city, he can use public transportation. He was driving. Lakewood has records of reimbursing him for mileage that he drove on the job. Small potatoes. The story with the woman bothers me more, not because he was cheating, but because that's how guys get blackmailed while in higher office...
August 6, 201410 yr I don't see the problem with the fact he did not have a license. He lives in the city, he can use public transportation. People are upset that he was driving around illegally. Normally not that big deal, but it raises questions because Fitzgerald sells himself on law and order, honesty, integrity etc. Plus it gives the bad impression of an elitist disconnect from the laws from which regular people like us must abide.
August 6, 201410 yr The driving without a license issue doesn't really bother me much, either. Obviously, it would have been a bigger issue in hindsight if he'd gotten into an accident (or if it comes out later that his vision has materially degraded since his previous test), but it's not like any of us really think that we're so much better drivers the day after we get our license renewed. I doubt that the streets of Cuyahoga County were really any less safe just because he forgot to get the DMV seal of approval.
August 6, 201410 yr I don't understand why he would have a temporary permit. I didn't realize he was only 15 in 2008
August 6, 201410 yr just because he forgot to get the DMV seal of approval. 4 days can be considered forgetting, 4 weeks may even be forgivable, but 4 years? That shows a conscious disregard. I happen to like Ed but no one can claim ignorance of a lapsed driver's license for that long.
August 6, 201410 yr But is any news, good news? I have always heard that he didn't have name recognition, now he does.
August 6, 201410 yr I don't understand why he would have a temporary permit. I didn't realize he was only 15 in 2008 He was out of state with the FBI for a few years. It's all very weird.
August 6, 201410 yr But is any news, good news? I have always heard that he didn't have name recognition, now he does. Somewhere south..... Heard that Fitzgerald character been with a gal in the car at 4am, and it weren't his wife neither. [google image search of Joanne Grehan] Well he's got my vote.
August 6, 201410 yr Here's an article from the other side of the pond. http://www.politics.ie/forum/mayo/228677-mayo-woman-embroiled-controversy-over-sitting-parked-car-ohio-gubernatorial-candidate.html It also shows a picture of the two together OBVIOUSLY SITTING TOO CLOSE TOGETHER.
August 6, 201410 yr http://www.dispatch.com/content/stories/local/2014/08/01/fitzgerald-cancels-campaign-events-calls-press-conference.html FitzGerald said during Friday’s news conference that he wound up driving the woman — a close family friend who was part of a visiting Irish delegation in October 2012 — because the others piled into an SUV to return to their hotels after a long night of drinking. The Cuyahoga County executive said he became separated from the other vehicle, there was confusion over where the woman was staying, so he pulled into a vacant industrial-complex parking lot. Was it politically foolish, or was it ingenious to include the part about the long night of drinking ha ha. Also, has it been proven that team Kasich's is behind this?

Normally not that big deal, but it raises questions because Fitzgerald sells himself on law and order, honesty, integrity etc. Plus it gives the bad impression of an elitist disconnect from the laws from which regular people like us must abide. Again, still don't see the big deal. I mean, public transportation is closed at that hour, and as good as public transportation may be, it is a lot easier for him to get a little "something" in the car than it would be for him to get it on the Rapid. - lol
August 6, 201410 yr Was it politically foolish, or was it ingenious to include the part about the long night of drinking ha ha. Supposedly, FitzGerald has never been drunk in his life.
August 6, 201410 yr this whole story is so dumb, you couldn't make it up. It really does make me question the guy's judgement, which is too bad because I've been very impressed with his leadership & accomplishments thus far as Cuyahoga County exec
August 6, 201410 yr Was it politically foolish, or was it ingenious to include the part about the long night of drinking ha ha. Supposedly, FitzGerald has never been drunk in his life. Well, if he's Irish, isn't it just a natural state? Looking at the guy, I would guess he still gets carded...
August 6, 201410 yr I personally believe Fitz's story about what happened with that woman. He was the designated driver for some Irish folks (across-the-pond Irish, not Irish-American). I don't know about you guys, but the few Irish people I know frequently stay out drinking until 4am! It's the other detail about the drivers' license that's a little troubling. It makes me question Fitz's judgment... though I still plan to vote for him over Kasich. I think Fitzgerald has been a very good county exec, but a pretty underwhelming candidate for governor. Still, we need to do something about the gerrymandered hold that the Republicans have on the state of Ohio. I don't see the state House or Senate switching soon, so the governor is the best option to fix this problem. A drivers license isn't enough to make me vote against a guy with a pretty good track-record.

A drivers license isn't enough to make me vote against a guy with a pretty good track-record. This is really what it comes down to. We live in what is undeniably a purple state, but we're on the precipice of getting ourselves a second-term governor who wants to try to impress conservatives nationwide as he runs for President and an extremist legislature that will be all too willing to help him bolster his credentials. It's not going to be pretty and any moderate-minded person should be voting for divided government, a counterbalance to that potentiality, even if it comes in the form of a dimwit like FitzGerald.

I saw Fitzgerald marching in the 4th of July parade in Cincinnati. He had no energy about him and people barely knew who he was.
August 6, 201410 yr I personally believe Fitz's story about what happened with that woman. THey had to climb into the backseat to figure out where her hotel was?
August 6, 201410 yr I'm no kasich fan by any means but this does not look good Even if nothing happened like Fitzgerald said(which I doubt), it still looks bad. I'm surprised Kasich leaked this out there now & not closer to the election. But still, Smart political move by Kasich and the GOP. Dirty, yes. But now no one is talking about kasich and his record
August 6, 201410 yr I saw Fitzgerald marching in the 4th of July parade in Cincinnati. He had no energy about him and people barely knew who he was. It should have been Strickland.
August 6, 201410 yr I saw Fitzgerald marching in the 4th of July parade in Cincinnati. He had no energy about him and people barely knew who he was. I don't know about the energy thing but, yeah, nobody seemed to know who he was. Same with Kundrata. who? The Dem running against Chabot. The apathy of the local Dems is amazing.
August 6, 201410 yr I'm still shaking my head that FitzGerald was apparently the best the Ohio Democratic Party could come up with to pit toe-to-toe against Kasich. This story only further validates my opinion about his sorry candidacy, but Dem state party chairman Chris Redfern is the real idiot here for being so eager to sign off on it. That he and the party didn't even vet FitzGerald properly for derpy things like this that could derail his campaign and wreck the entire slate's chances in November is pure incompetence. But really, Mr. Redfern? A one-term county executive? 8 key cities with 8 mayors, all of them currently members of your party, and a Josh Mandel-esque one-term county executive in a state with two such unique positions among 88 counties is the best you can come up with?? I'm admittedly not much of a fan of running legislators for executive roles, which pretty much takes us back to Voinovich. But former Congressman Strickland at least got us jump-started and headed toward the 21st century in 2006. Then we ended up with the rail and urban-hating former Congressman and Wall Street/Lehman Bros. man Kasich, and we've been fast-forwarded in terms of our state-level social and urban policy backwards to 1954. Kasich should not be allowed to cruise completely unchallenged into lame duck status and his even lamer presidential ambitions by default. But that's where we are right now, and it looks like we're going to be stuck with him until January 2019. Yay for inept and corrupt two-party politics. :wtf: :x
August 6, 201410 yr The stuff about the temp drivers license does not look good. That's a basic responsibility even us in the proletariat address ASAP. Bizarre that he let that situation persist and frankly raises questions about basic personality defects. www.cincinnatiideas.com

August 7, 201410 yr Anyone think mark Mallory could have challenged kasich ? He certainly could have. If he had started laying groundwork statewide when FitzGerald did, and then they battled it out in a serious primary. Just like some have suggested that this recent series of negative coverage for Fitz will actually boost his recognition, a contentious primary could have done the same thing. Constant coverage of the primary would have been a huge chance for the Democrats to get their message out, with nothing exciting on the Republican side to balance it out.
August 7, 201410 yr Was it politically foolish, or was it ingenious to include the part about the long night of drinking ha ha. Supposedly, FitzGerald has never been drunk in his life. I'm actually kinda surprised you even know who Ed Fitzgerald is.
August 7, 201410 yr I live in Akron and I barely know who FitzGerald is. As for the likely extremism flowing from Kasich's presidential ambitions, maybe if he thinks the the only thing that matters is the primary, but if he really is thinking about a White House run (and his name hasn't shown up in the conversation as much in the last few months), he's also got to think about accomplishments he could present to a general election audience. And in fact, on water rights and gas extraction taxes, he's stood up to the Republicans in his own General Assembly. I do wish that he were better on transportation issues (both local and regional). But that's not likely to be anything close to a fatal flaw in the general election.
August 7, 201410 yr I don't think that the gas extraction tax situation was ever satisfactorily resolved and while I'll freely admit that I'm more cynical than others regarding politicians, I believe that his "standing up" to the Assembly on that issue played out exactly as planned.
August 7, 201410 yr I couldn't give a you know what about what he was doing in the car and with whom. But the driver's license thing is just...weird. I mean, who the heck goes around for four years with only a learner's permit and WHY would you do that, especially if driving is a part of your job? It's not like going for a license is so cost-prohibitive that he couldn't afford to do it, and has been pointed out, it's not really something you would "forget," which means it had to be purposeful, but why. I'm not generally a conspiracy type, but the Feds are strange bedfellows. If he was doing "something" with them for several years beforehand, there could be a related reason, though again, I don't know what. Something that would come up if they entered into an official state record? Dunno. Too weird to overlook completely without an adequate explanation.
August 8, 201410 yr I don't see the problem with the fact he did not have a license. He lives in the city, he can use public transportation. Well he was driving publicly owned cars, does that count?

People nationwide won't realize that both his opponents have been guilty of political malpractice.
