I didn't know Coretta Scott King went to Antioch College

ATLANTA - Coretta Scott King will be given a public viewing in the rotunda of the Georgia Capitol at the governor's invitation, her family announced Thursday in a measure of how far the South has come since the civil rights era. In a statement, the King family announced funeral plans for the widow of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. that include a viewing at the Capitol on Saturday; another viewing on Monday at Ebenezer Baptist Church, King's longtime pulpit; and a funeral in suburban Atlanta on Tuesday at the 10,000-seat New Birth Missionary Baptist Church, where the Kings' youngest child, Bernice, is a minister. King, 78, died Tuesday at an alternative medicine clinic in Mexico where she had sought treatment for ovarian cancer.

"The King family is overwhelmed at the generous outpouring of support, prayers and condolences from all over the world," said Chris Garrett, a family spokesman.

Ah, Yellow Springs. What is probably the best small town in the entire state. Great hiking, also has Young's Jersey Dairy which has the best milkshakes in the state. How can you go wrong?

And how could I forget; Dave Chapelle's hometown.

Coretta Scott King majored in Music Education at Antioch--where her sister was one of the first-if not the first-black students to be admitted to Antioch.  Although Ms. King reportedly did not face "serious" issues with race at Antioch, she was unable to find a student teaching job in the area because of her race.

Antioch awarded her their distinguished alumni award a couple of years ago and she attended and spoke at the event.  They also dedicated a center for cultural and intellectual freedom in her name.

I saw Coretta Scott King speak last March at UD...although certainly physically frail, she delivered a very powerful message--not only about race relations, but also about gender, sexual orientation, economic, and other issues.  She was truly a friend to many and will be missed.

God bless her.
