I'm working to throw a decently sized charity event in October of this year and I need some suggestions/help finding a venue (hopefully in the CBD or OTR).

It's a beard competition where the proceeds will go to a yet-undecided charity (but yes, all proceeds my group makes from the event will go there). If you haven't been to a beard event before, they're fantastic and you should go (there's one in Cleveland on April 6th if you're interested) and almost all of them are for charity.

I'm hoping to draw around 250 people and we'll need booze available. Originally i was thinking about the Know Theater, but they're booked for Saturdays in early October.

Any ideas?

What time of the day will you hold the competition? Japp's/Japp's Annex could work.

I was also going to suggest the Japp's Annex, assuming the time doesn't conflict with their normal Saturday night business. Give them a call at (513) 381-1524.

The Moerlein facility on Moore Street has hosted a few charity type events that I have been to before, not to mention Bockfest.  I think they have even been willing to donate their beer for charity too.

The Moerlein brewery/event space is another good option.

Typically this sort of event is an evening/night thing and some of our members have talked to Japp's before about it. We would have to hold it as a closed/ticketed event and let the owner take whatever comes frown the bar.

Is there anything going on with the Hanke building? And does the Emery have events? Their webpage is pretty out of date, but I was there for MPMF.

Edit: typos...on my phone.

Venue 222 is another option http://venue222.com/

Some other random ideas: The Avenue in Covington, the upstairs bar at Mainstay.

Yes, and they do have a liquor license.  And there is always Grammar's (available for rent).

Damn, Venue 222 charges a lot of money for a space. I love bockfest hall, maybe we can work something out there. Or Grammers would be awesome, although I'm not keen on them shutting the place down. I thought about Arnold's or Neon's (even though I hate their bathroom situation).

We're quite new as an organization and all the money for this either has to be raised over the next few months or comes out of pocket, so the cheaper the better. Unlikely, I know.

I went to an event held upstairs at Arnold's. It is likely VERY inexpensive.

Grammars has been closed for a couple years. It's only open for private events so they wouldn't be closing anything down.

The jail alley space would work.  Just pull an F license which is very inexpensive.  2 floors, 2 bars with a large stage.  Contact Polly at the Stough Group and tell her I sent you.  Neons, Japps and the Annex are all problematic if it is a weekend and a ticketed event.  If the proceeds finds its way to an OTR Charity, my company may be willing to donate some money and or resources to help you secure the location or operate the bar.

Another reason to do that space is its proximity to the 700 space garage.  We should have that as the official parking for Main Street by mid Feb.

^^ Grammer's also has the look and feel of a place that should be hosting a beard competition.  I'd imagine there were some excellent beards in there in 1880.

Glad to hear this is moving forward.

^Just working out details now plus way finding.

I'm not familiar with the jail ally. It sounds like a place I would want to check out.

Whoops, I wasn't clear...my issue is that they shut it down and now only open once in awhile. I imagine they'd want a profit for opening it up for a day. Still, it's worth looking into.

Jail Alley is Michael Baney Alley today (old habit).  Down the Alley on the south side of Japps directly behind the Have A Nice Day space.

How about Pallet 23 in Northside? Just open and Northside loves Mustaches. That may even be their motto now.

I think Northside Tavern would be a great place for a competition, and it's one of my favorite bars in the city, my only fear is that with folks coming in from out of town (and we will have a good number) it's a bit far from hotels. Downtown/OTR really fits perfectly and shows off the city in a way that Northside doesn't.
