As recently as May 2004 the Turret Building was rental. I looked at 3 different units in the building.  At that time they were large, open, uninspired spaces. About 1500 sq ft as I recall.

I also believe the movie Artworks actually used one of the building's units for many scenes.

A couple of things from today....

Jonathan Meadows (Walnut Hills/Evanston) - Ground was broken (ceremonially) several months ago for a bunch of new townhomes on Jonathan Ave. by Walnut Hills HS.  I drove by there today and not a damn thing has been done.  A map of the site is at the bottom of this post.

Jordan's Crossing (Roselawn/Bond Hill) - Construction is proceeding nicely on the building at the corner of Reading and Langdon Farm.  Sorry, no pics.

The 1.25million that guy spent on reading road and now he might get a nice view of Family Dollar!

Today I noticed that this piece of crap at McMillan and Boone in Walnut Hills was gone.  Good riddance.

The lot is now covered with straw.

It seems this is a Neighborhood Development Corporation Association site.  Unfortunately, their website doesn't work.  Idiots!

While I think we all will miss the Barrellhouse Brewing Co., this is a great use for a building that was way underutilized.  The renovation and all the students should really help out the area.

Here are a few pics from the website (http://www.artacademy.edu/whatsnew/building.htm), there are many more.....

Excellent.

"You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers

Wow, looking good.  Other than The Barrellhouse, was there anything else in the building?

As far as I know it was more or less empty other than storage space.

I like the moving around in that area.  I don't miss the Barrelhouse because I never went there and I'm too young to legally drink.  It's good that the site though will be enhanced.

The building looks great from the outside now with the new windows.  With the new garage and condos going in across the street, it is a welcome beacon of investment in the neighborhood.  And a very stark contrast to areas just a block or two away.

I would love to see the Academy sponsor art projects throughout the neighborhood such as murals, sculptures, or maybe even painting some buildings. So many little things could be done to enliven the neighborhood. Hey Kendall, got a paintbrush?

Any exterior pics?

Here is a pic, but they usually don't last long from the auditor site.  If not shown, go to hamiltoncountyauditor.org and type in 22 E twelfth st under the "address" search.

  • Author

^ You can put that pic in as an attachment.

Grasscat, how do I do that?

  • Author

^ First, the pic needs to be saved on your hard drive.  (You can delete it from your HD after you've uploaded it.)

Instead of Quick Reply, reply by using the "Reply" button.  Under the message box is "Additional Options".  When you click on that, there's a box for attachments.  Hit "Browse" and select the file you wish to use.

All images must be under something like 156 KB (auditor's pics are usually WELL below that).

I did it on the one above, it should be there.

More to come....

As a PR resident, I have an interest in the upcoming changes in the Ridge/Highland area.  There is a meeting April 5 at the PR comminity center to disccuss the problems and solutions.  I'll go to see/hear what people are proposing since that's the main gateway into PR and the intersection and surrounding area is a disaster on many levels.  Since im new to the area, I looked up Columbia Township's website to see what is exactly included in Columbia Township, and it's the most scattered "township" Ive ever seen.  It's all broken up and all over Hamilton county.  SO I ask the local veterans..."what's up with that?"  Check out this map if you dont know what I mean.

http://www.columbiatownship.org/township%20maps.htm

Columbia Township is named after Columbia, the first settlement in the Symmes Purchase. Columbia was settled even before Cincinnati. It disappeared because it was vulnerable to flooding. A pioneer cemetary remains near Lunkin Airport.

Columbia Township was once a respectable township as far as size was concerned. It has been eaten away from all directions by the City of Cincinnati, City of Norwood, Village of Fairfax, Village of Mariemont, Village of Golf Manor, Amberly Village, City of Maderia, and City of The Village of Indian Hill. A few fragments are all that remain. Columbia Township is the most disjointed township that I know.

The Columbia Township building is located in the City of Maderia.

Why don't they just desolve the Twp.

A township can be dissolved only if it is completely annexed. In Hamilton County, Storrs Township, Cincinnati Township, and Millcreek Township have been dissolved.

The Columbia Township building is located in the City of Maderia.

That is just fantastically cool!  I wonder how many other jurisdictions can say that...

  • Author

Yeah, I thought Springfield Twp. was all over the place, but Columbia Twp. is just ridiculous.

EDIT: Eighth and State, I merged your other post in for you.

Cincinnati should annex the main part of Columbia Twp. (the shopping district described in this thread), upgrade the sidewalks and Ridge Road to create a cohesive shopping district with Center of Cincinnati and the proposed Millworks site.  Let the other pieces of the township go to the largest contiguous municipal unit.  We're talking about a key corridor joining Cincinnati and the inner ring suburbs.  Given the difficulties these areas are faced with due to sprawl, a highly fragmented governance/decision making structure is the last thing that is needed.

Does anyone know where Columbia Twp. kids go to school?

  • Author

^ Columbia Twp. kids go to Cincinnati schools.

It's great to see some investment in neighborhoods that don't get enough.

An update from the 3/18/05 Cincinnati Post:

Ford Fairfax now history

Former factory leveled to make way for retail

By Jon Newberry

Post staff reporter

When it opened in 1951, Ford Motor Co.'s plant in Fairfax was its first facility to manufacture automatic transmissions. The abandoned plant is now in the final stages of demolition, as workers are clearing the site to make way for a retail and office complex.

The Cincinnati Automatic Transmission Plant, as it was known, built the initial Fordomatic and Merc-O-Matic models, a three-speed design licensed from Borg Warner. They were introduced as a $180 option for 1951 model-year cars.

These are projects that are in the works for the city of Covington that haven't been covered anywhere else in this forum.  As any of them begin to see the light of day, I'll split them off and start a new topic.

This list as of January:

Jacob Price Homes: With the need for major renovation in the near future, the Covington Housing Authority is exploring the feasibility of replacing Jacob Price's 163-subdizided apartments with a mix of apartments and single-family homes spread throughout the city. The project mirrors a national move to decentralize public housing. The project would happen in stages. What would be done with the six acres on which Jacob Price sits isn't clear.

Land near I-71/75: The straightening of Death Hill's S-curve in the early '90s freed up 10.6 acres of prime land on the east side of the interstate. Covington rezoned the land for professional office and has been marketing the site since. Two major companies, one of which would bring 750 jobs, are interested, and the state says it would build an access road to the interstate. An announcement could come this year.  (GRASSCAT: One of those companies was Cincinnati Bell, which recently announced that it will be staying in Cincinnati.)

Park Place Square: Restaurants and other businesses were to complement condominiums and a $3.5 million park and public plaza in a design plan unveiled in 1998 for the area around Park and Court streets. Questions surrounding the jail have held up Park Place Square, but the city says a developer is accumulating buildings and may come forward with a presentation soon.  (GRASSCAT: The main holdup is the lack of a means of funding the new Kenton County Jail, which has put this plan in limbo.  As you may also recall, this is the general area of Jack Quinn's, who has threatened to move if the city can't deliver on this project.)

Riverfront Commons: Southbank Partners, the economic development group, is championing the idea of Riverfront Commons, a 10-foot-wide, three-mile-long path connecting the Port Bellevue development on Bellevue's riverfront with Covington Landing at the foot of Madison Avenue in Covington. Estimated cost is in the millions for the project, which was unveiled in 2003 as a way to promote pedestrian traffic in the river cities.  (GRASSCAT: Covington had asked for $4.9M in federal money for the project.)

Hopple Crossing has finally started to go up.  All of the wood framing work looks nearly completed.

Also, things may be moving on Jonathan Meadows in Evanston.  Excavation and fill work is going to be done at 1527 Jonathan Ave.

I don't know much about Art Academies, but this facility looks first-rate and it can only raise the institution's stature.  Not to mention the tremendous impact it will have on the neighborhood.

"You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers

^Amen.  Lots of businesses around, easy access to downtown and the freeways, and some great housing stock.  I lived on Hackberry for a while, and it was definitely a street on the upswing - lots of rehabs, some new construction, lots of stuff going right.  I was renting a floor sander at Schulhoff Tool Rental on Friday and saw some guys on the roof of the Krug building, just across the street (just north of Burdett on Woodburn) - just look at this place:

guy on the roof:

...that's just one building of many.  That neighborhood is just itching to revitalize.

I live close to those N. Avondale condos and those are a monkeys ass.  I thought they were apartments I hate that look but I hope that they attract good people (with shitty taste probably) and my neighborhood benefits.

Jonathan Meadows in Evanston now has two units undergoing excavation and fill: 1524 and 1527 Jonathan Ave.  New housing could be on the way.

Also, hillside stabilization/foundation work is going on at 308-316 Boal St. on Prospect Hill, near Sycamore.  These will have killer views (they're on the north side of the street).

More planned development....

Downtown

Ninth and Race (Brittany Condos)

15 units, 1-2 BR, 1000-1300 SF...$185,000-$210,000...in pre-redevelopment

(pictured below)

Brittany Condo looks like it has some real potential.

With all these "random" developments going on which seem to never end, how is it still estimated that Cincinnati will lose population by the 2010 census? And how are places like Hyde Park and Mt. lookout loosing people when it seems that there is endless demand for houses and apartments there?

I'll try to keep the 830 Lincoln project documented as it goes...if we're in town, I normally hit Giminetti's every Saturday morning for some breakfast sandwiches and some bread, then I tool around thru Walnut Hills on the way home...

Re: Jonathan Meadows

* The city is providing Jonathan Meadows LLC a deferred forgivable $881,519 loan to construct 24 housing units on Jonathan Ave. near Walnut Hills HS.  The total cost of the project is around $4.7 million.

* They were to be built as 12 side-by-side townhomes.  Each will be a minimum of 1,992 square feet with 3 bedrooms, 2 full baths and a 2-car garage.

* It now appears that it will be 22 townhomes, and they should be completed within 22 months.

If you'd like to read the contract/funding agreement, it's here:

http://city-egov.rcc.org/BASISCGI/BASIS/council/public/child/DDD/12886.pdf

As to the 2010 population, if there is a drop in population I suspect it will be coming from the west side. Notice how we almost never hear about development going on over there? It's not because we aren't listening.

i work right next to the site, but unfortunately missed the smokestack coming down.

kinda would've liked to see it incorporated into the design of the new development, as they did with the leblonde stack at rookwood.  oh well.
