Posted December 26, 201113 yr 2 library branches to be replaced By Dean Narciso, The Columbus Dispatch Thursday, December 15, 2011 - 8:52 AM Columbus Metropolitan Library board’s trustees voted (December 14, 2011) to begin the replacement of two outdated branches, authorizing $839,500 for architectural services to replace the Driving Park and Whitehall branches. The Driving Park branch, 1566 E. Livingston Ave., was built in 1972 and, at 6,000 square feet, is the smallest of the system’s 21 branches. The replacement, to be designed by NBBJ, will be more than double that size and cost as much as $6 million. The Whitehall branch, 4371 E. Broad St., was built in 1959 and renovated in 1993. It has 7,466 square feet of building space at the busy intersection of Broad Street and Yearling Road. The replacement, by Jonathan Barnes Architecture and Design, could almost triple its size at a cost as high as $8 million. December 29, 201113 yr Oh man, when I was a kid, a ton of the library branches in Columbus looked like the Driving Park one inside and out. I bet it's the last one.
December 29, 201113 yr There's an old one in the 2900 block of South High that's been turned into health care.
December 23, 201212 yr The Columbus Metropolitan Library Board of Trustees voted earlier this month to approve a land purchase at 1422 East Livingston Avenue. This purchase clears the way for construction of a new $6 million, 15,000 square foot Driving Park Branch Library. This new building, designed by NBBJ, would double the size of the current Driving Park branch located three blocks east of this new site. The new Driving Park Library is scheduled to break ground in 2013 and open in 2014. More about this at the below article links from the Dispatch and Columbus Underground. Also below is a map showing the current and future Driving Park Library locations, and a rendering of the new library: Columbus Dispatch: Driving Park library site purchased Columbus Underground: New Driving Park Library Announced
February 6, 201312 yr The Dispatch had a recent article titled "Buying old Deaf School won’t hinder library upgrades". The title refers to the Columbus Metro Library system buying the Old Deaf School building and property that is adjacent to the system's Main Library in downtown. The article also looked at the system's branches that are slated for renovation or replacement over the next four years. Below is a chart of this:
August 1, 201311 yr Library launches $120M building program with Driving Park groundbreaking By Jeff Bell, Staff reporter Business First - July 30, 2013, 2:51pm EDT It’s one down and nine to go on groundbreaking ceremonies for the Columbus Metropolitan Library after it celebrated the start of construction Tuesday for a new Driving Park branch. The $6 million project off Livingston Avenue on Columbus’ east side is the first of 10 projects in the library system’s $120 million building program. It calls for the relocation of six branch libraries and renovations and expansion of four others, including the Main Library downtown. Library Executive Director Pat Losinski recently said construction is expected to start on a new Whitehall branch this fall, and schedules for the other projects are still to be determined. All the work is expected to be completed by 2020. MORE: http://www.bizjournals.com/columbus/news/2013/07/30/library-launches-120m-building.html

October 5, 201311 yr More about the new Driving Park Library design from a Business First article about how the CML system is evolving its libraries to be relevant in a digital age. The full article should be viewable to non-subscribers. If not, the below excerpt gives you the gist: Columbus Library faces new demands as it expands By Jeff Bell, Staff reporter Business First - August 2, 2013, 6:00am EDT Columbus Metropolitan Library CEO Pat Losinski looks to a period in 2009 when his belief that public libraries have become more than places to borrow books was reaffirmed. ... Those expectations, he said, are driving Columbus Metropolitan Library’s $120 million building program that will relocate six branch libraries and renovate and expand four others, including the main library downtown. Groundbreaking for the first project, a new Driving Park branch off Livingston Avenue on Columbus’ east side, started July 30. Construction will begin on a new Whitehall branch this fall. The Dublin, Martin Luther King, Parsons Avenue and Shepard libraries also will be relocated, while the Hilliard, Northern Lights and Northside branches will be renovated and expanded. The schedules for those seven projects still are to be determined in a building program expected to take five to seven years to complete. ... The building program will touch nearly half of the Columbus system’s 21 locations, many of which are 40 to 50 years old and said to be inadequate to meet the demands of a growing community. Those demands include meeting rooms where community groups can gather, tutoring spaces for students, more public computer terminals. (. . .) Those are among the goals NBBJ architect A.J. Montero has as lead designer for the $6 million Driving Park branch as well as creating a building tailored to the needs of the east-side neighborhood it will serve. Montero sat in meetings the library staff held with community members who cited needs for more meeting rooms and areas for education and training programs. In response, the new 15,334-square-foot building will have three conference rooms able to accommodate up to 120 people instead of the current 16. Areas designated for teens and children will more than double and triple in size, respectively. The new building will house 47 public computers compared with 30 now. ... The Driving Park design also is intended to create a library that is a beacon for the community, Montero said. Describing the process as “turning a library inside out,” he said book stacks will be in the center of the building and social spaces will be along the walls where large windows look out on Livingston Avenue. Such transparency is aimed at pulling people into the library. MORE: http://www.bizjournals.com/columbus/print-edition/2013/08/02/library-faces-new-demands-as-it-expands.html
October 7, 201311 yr The article also reports that DesignGroup was hired as the architectural firm to design the planned Northern Lights branch library and that construction on that project is slated to begin in mid-2014. Ball, Staff reporter Business First - October 1, 2013, 10:57am EDT The Columbus Metropolitan Library trustees have approved the selection of Turner Construction Co. as the construction manager at risk for 10 projects slated to cost $120 million through 2020. The projects consist of relocation of six branch libraries and the renovation and expansion of four others, include the main library downtown. The library plans to build the new 10,000-square-foot library on a 3.2-acre tract at 2400 E. Fifth Avenue. The existing 6,005-square-foot Shepard Branch at 790 Nelson Road dates back to 1985. October 4, 201410 yr Community to Welcome a New Library in Marion-Franklin By Jesse Bethea, Columbus Underground September 12, 2014 - 2:42 pm The Columbus Metropolitan Library is set to open its 22nd branch. The 4,000 square foot library will be CML’s first branch in the Marion-Franklin area, which tends to be cut off from the rest of greater Columbus by railroads and busy highways. The new library will be in the space formerly occupied by the Beery Middle School media center, leased to CML in 2013 by Columbus City Schools for $1 a year over five years. CML needed only a couple of months to renovate the space, which is now ready to open on Sept. 15 with standard library services, including public computers, wireless internet access, a Reading Buddies program and a Homework Help Center sponsored by Bob Evans. Ball, Staff Reporter Columbus Business First - Sep 25, 2014, 1:02pm EDT The Columbus Metropolitan Library has hired NBBJ to design another branch, this time replacing the 24-year-old Northside Branch at 1423 N. High Street. “We have no immediate timetable on the demolition of the existing building,” library spokesman Ben Zenitsky told me, “but expect to begin construction in the latter half of 2015 and open a year later.” The new 27,000-square-foot branch will offer more than three times the existing 7,728-square-foot library and total project cost is $11.76 million. ... The project will not incorporate commercial space as Pizzuti Solutions originally had suggested. Zenitsky said the mixed-use option “encountered some major issues.” MORE: http://www.bizjournals.com/columbus/news/2014/09/25/library-hires-nbbj-to-design-expanded-northside.html
