Posted February 3, 201312 yr Not too far from Pittsburgh lies a model company town credited to Olmsted and Eliot. Vandergrift is a real treat with common worker housing on densely packed along curvilinear, tree-lined streets and commercial blocks bookended with rounded corner buildings. February 4, 201312 yr Wow...thanks for sharing!! My great great aunt, who is 97, grew up in Vandergrith. She's always talked about it but I've never been. I looked at your thread imagining her as a young girl in the 20's roaming those charming little streets...thanks again!!
February 5, 201312 yr One branch of my family is named Vandergrift and reportedly were involved in the founding of this town. I love compact towns like this that are nestled among the hills of Pennsylvania and other northeast states. They all feel very cozy to me. Funny how that original town plan is presented upside down with respect to north. And I am pleased to see the steel mill is still a going concern under ATI which is building a $1.1 billion hot rolled mill in nearby Brackenridge that will probably need support facilities like Vandergrift's....... http://www.atimetals.com/businesses/business-units/ludlum/Pages/default.aspx "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
