As promised... more facade lighting is being installed along the bottom as well. Also- pretty sure they are rebuilding the pinnacles that used to line the top.

  • Commercial building permit filed this morning for the retail space in the Athlon which means that someone probably rented the space. No details yet.

  • Beats a totally vacant storefront

It is not done and the scaffolding is not gone.

The owner of the CAC owns my building I currently live in on Huron Road. With my experiences here and with her, she is well intentioned but not someone who is good at "developing". The inside of our buildings lobby is largely the same as it was fifteen years ago and has been "being upgraded" for years now. I would not expect this to be "done" until late this year or early next year.

This is the longest rehab in the history of the world.  If you look at old pics of the Playhouse Square lighting and signs going up, there was work being done in 2013

Nothing seems to have been done over the last 6-8 weeks yet there are workers there constantly! I saw some of the fiberglass (?) exterior molding being delivered recently, so maybe they were waiting on that.

There have been people living there though for a good couple of months.

My hovercraft is full of eels

^The upper floors is probably where all the work is happening. When I toured in June those floors barely had drywall hung. The pool area didn't have wiring in the walls yet, so the tradesmen had to come in and finish drywall, lay tile, paint walls, install cabinetry, install lighting, install carpet, install signage, etc. Probably all the activity you've seen.

They are also working everyday on the ground floor retail bays and entrances / repairing and replacing the sidewalk etc.  Not sure why it is dragging on but at least the sidewalk is *mostly* open.  Looks like the last step in the exterior restoration is to recreate the pinnacles that lined the top of the building.

Are all the apartment units complete?

To be fair it took a year or so just to remove all the trash, debris, mold, water damage, and to replace the roof so that they could begin the total rehab of the building. The building was vacate without heat for about ten years and had massive water damage and was vandalized too.  And it went thru several developers before the existing partnership took over the project in about 2016.

Athlon might be getting close to finishing!

I love seeing all these buildings come on line.  It's taken a decade, but redeveloping all these old office buildings into residential is a marathon, not a sprint.

that would be a hard no for me.

Yikes..some of.that decor pays no homage to the architecture/interior design. Take that back out to the suburbs.

Are those patio tables?

Looks like the inside of a Courtyard Marriott.

While the opinions vary on the interior of The Athlon, this is just plain wrong....

Less sidewalk for e-scooters to block? Sounds like a great idea.

^ Although I don’t like it either, how is it any different to Heinens, Yours Truly, Heck’s etc taking up sidewalk space on Euclid for outdoor seating that narrows the sidewalk just as much?

My hovercraft is full of eels

Keep in Mind that without the curb pull of zone, cars idling in front of the building, including move in trucks would have to park in the right of way, which requires cars to travel into and block the bus only lane. This already happens in areas without these pull offs. Put the transit underground on Euclid! Oh, wait...

I agree, but as someone who's had to run around the broken sidewalk almost every day for 3 years, they really could have handled it better.

"this is just as bad as the other thing that is also bad" is not a convincing argument.

"just plain wrong"? according to who? do you use this sidewalk?

What promotes walkability and urbanity? A wider sidewalk with places and features worthy of visiting and lingering or a wider street for more vehicles?

EDIT: I'm reminded of this graphic.....

Besides the annoying curb cut in. This building is about done. Just need 925 to get started and the Euclid Renaissance in this area is truly amazing

compared to the last 5-10 years.

Well you know what.  Produce multiple renderings and a ground breaking date.  I mean is that too much to ask?

You left out "provide financing" haha.

KJP is now in financing business. Hopefully Nucleus is one of his main clients.  HeHe.

It sounded like you were saying the tweeters were wrong and the narrow sidewalk was fine. Guess I misinterpreted. I think we're both saying this sidewalk should be wider.

Is there only one side walk in this area?

Is there only one street in the area? There was a covered entrance to the side of the CAC, off the East 12th alley.

My grandfather was a regular at the CAC from the 1910s to the 1960s. He was one of many corporate executives who were members. He drove his 7-passenger Packard down there from Shaker Heights during the Great Depression just to show off (yes, he was an a-hole). The CAC has been there since 1911. NOW they need a cut-out for a valet?

Yes, because the north sidewalk is blocked off by the JHB development.

The alley between Halle/CAC has been blocked off by construction since about 2014.

Do they need a valet? Definitely not, but they probably want one because it makes money and helps compete with The 9, and I'm guessing the city let them have it.

Folks, these are good problems to have.

At least the conversation is around a lack of pedestrian space and access because there's so much development in the area.

Replace it with a pocket park!

I guess so, but I'm cranky. this is my backyard! Construction here seems to take longer than it should and disrupt services more than it should.

@YABO713 Grandpa used to drive his shiny new Packard with his family inside around the block a couple of times near a downtown soup kitchen during the Great Depression just to show off to the unemployed. When one of them spat on his car, grandpa decided to drive past the soup kitchen a couple more times and yell "lazy!" at the indigent. Just because I'm related to him doesn't mean I can relate to him. He wasn't a warm and empathetic man.

Anyhow -- point is the CAC catered to the wealthy of this city for 96 years , and many of its demanding clientele drove to the CAC in fancy cars. None of them needed a valet lane.

We all have that one relative...

Also... significant retail at Euclid Grand (cough Target cough) would really help reduce the need for valet.

I also see the valet zone being used by UPS/FedEx/Amazon delivery trucks. By my count they make up most of the parked traffic blocking the non bus lane.

Regarding the sidewalk width, the original width here was about 11 feet because the road widened to add the turning lane at East 12th. At Heinen's and Yours Truly, the sidewalk width is about 18 feet, so you're left with more passable sidewalk at those locations than you are here.

Some old friends are very involved with this conversion.  Part of the reason for the valet lane.....and not that i agree with it......is that they have no parking on site.  So they are offering valet service to perspective renters to overcome the lack of close parking.  Also, while I was talking to them yesterday, they currently have no takers on the available retail space in the first floor.  He mentioned names they have talked too, but so far, nothing.  He did ask, what do downtown dwellers want to have?  I told him that after a City Target or maybe a Discsount Drug Mart, I'm not sure.  Thoughts?

My friend said that Walgreens is interested in Euclid Grand.  And as for Target, he mentioned that he heard they were interested in the May Company building until Gilbert got involved??  that one confused me

That would suckkkkkk... there's literally a CVS across the street and another .25 miles north down Euclid

Thats what I told him.....We don't need more overpriced pharmacies.

There's something to be said for nostalgia. It adds perspective and historical context that provides additional meaning to projects.

Not surprised, considering all the empty nesters downtown.

I smell another retail discussion threatening to take this thread off-topic, however.

And yet, with a pharmacy seemingly on every corner in some suburban areas, there are none at CSU.  Really surprised about that.
