September 25, 20195 yr Someplace that sells boxers and undershirts and belts. You’d be surprised how many weddings at the 9 I’ve attended where someone forgot to pack an article of clothing and had to Uber all the way to steelyard to pick up something. Hard to do when you’re in a wedding party with a packed schedule!

He drove his 7-passenger Packard down there from Shaker Heights during the Great Depression just to show off (yes, he was an a-hole). The CAC has been there since 1911. September 26, 20195 yr I think it's fine that the building wanted a drop off lane, but it should have come at the expense of the left turn lane instead of the sidewalk. Let the car people fight among themselves.

On topic, they were pouring the floor for the sidewalk entrance to the Athlon. getting close to a clear sidewalk!

On a side note I've noticed the brick crosswalks dissolving away in places creating dimples or holes and was wondering if there are any explanations. I think there might be some underground steam vents that are leaking thru unfortunately.

Steam vents maybe, but I think a major cause are construction crews setting up heavy equipment on it without using protective measures. I feel construction crews are the largest contributor, not to mention freeze thaw cycles probably don't help either.
September 30, 20195 yr now that the sidewalk is mostly functional again, I want to highlight a big peeve of mine: the handicap ramp on the south sidewalk of Euclid by 12th. The ramp is not smooth like the others, it juts out far into the sidewalk, and it is a big tripping hazard. I have tripped on it myself several times. One time I saw an older woman trip and fall on it, and she seemed rather injured. (screenshot is obviously pre-construction)

As UO's retail Queen, nobody would love to have Higbee's (really Halle's) reopen than me, but it's not going to happen. The bones of Higbee's is still in the building, but we would need phase two of the casino to open in order to have the physical Higbee building converted back to a department store. Can we concentrate on the topic at hand? SELF INCLUDED. Lately a lot of threads of veered off topic into other threads. We can do better so the MODs don't have to clean up and move off topic posts/discussion to appropriate threads. Edited September 30, 20195 yr by MyTwoSense
October 1, 20195 yr @Cavalier Attitude Wow its been so long since this part of the sidewalk was closed that I thought they ADDED that in. I had no idea it was there to begin with. It definitely seems like a very odd place to put something like that.

I think the news reporter did a thoughtful job to provoke and make a point of the interviewee's response. Word on the street for naysayers, lay people, and those who don't follow urban development trends is that there won't be enough folk to fill Cleveland's new downtown structures. This story drove home the point that there is room for even more residential development downtown. The point of such news blurbs isn't to alert knowledgeable people about things we already know about, but to share important facts with people who are interested in learning them. I suggest folk top whining about media questions that challenge what is popularly perceived, and questions like his that prompt factual answers for the public. - In my book that's WHAT THE NEWS IS SUPPOSED TO DO. October 4, 20195 yr The curb cut in front of the CAC is absolutely ridiculous. If you compare the curb cuts in front of Heinens, The Wyndham etc. the useable sidewalk is about TWICE what it is in front of the CAC. This is because the sidewalk as a whole narrows at this intersection... so of course lets put a curb cut in the narrowest part of the sidewalk. ?♂️ Edited October 4, 20195 yr by mrclifton88

October 9, 20195 yr ? @MyTwoSense have you seen this sidewalk in person? It’s actually laughable in how ridiculously narrow it is. I’m not sure what anyone was thinking here... I’m glad at least the sidewalk is OPEN. but really ??

There are similarly narrow stretches on the sidewalk of Kalākaua Ave. in Honolulu, one of the most heavily pedestrianized sidewalks in the country. I’m not saying the narrow sidewalk is ideal, but don’t think it’s a huge problem and certainly not one that’s unique to Cleveland.

October 29, 20195 yr Great question. They are still working on the facade. The part at street level was being worked on yesterday- they are also installing up-lighting and sconces. I noticed last night the up-lighting at the top of the building is on. I’ll try to get a photo tonight.

October 29, 20195 yr Let's not forget this building was on the verge of being too far gone to save- the water damage and resulting mold and rot damage was extremely extensive- not only to the inside but to the facade.
