backing on to the topic..

 

There are downtown residents and then there are downtown residents. I feel that some of these Euclid Ave apartment projects will have a larger impact on downtown. They will put people in the heart of downtown and help link the different portions of downtown. It will be great to walk from the two Squares and feel the residential density.

 

Don't forget that the apartments above Corner Alley should be ready by this summer sometime. I've heard that they are very cool inside.

I think what's happening on Euclid is phenomenal, and will transform the downtown.  I hope that stuff like 515 tower, the addition to 1021, etc. happen with the street losing its historic character.

I've been holding out with the faintest hopes that the May Co. Building was going to be the location of the med mart.  I envisioned Beautiful store front windows on Euclid displaying different furniture, medical devices, etc... a bustling economic driver right on euclid... instead we are apparently getting "tequilla ranch - public square".  Doesn't seem to fit well in that area.

Nice pics :)  I've been avoiding that area via car, so I haven't seen it lately.

Oh god, please no.  One thing about the old flats that I liked is that it clumped all the cheesy bars that I would never visit in one place so that I could easily avoid them all.  But without the flats...those bars are free to roam all over downtown...

hey, when a Chili's opens on Euclid we'll know that downtown Cleve is officially back in the big leagues...  :wink:

You're telling me you don't go to the TGI Friday's in Times Square, MTS?  Is this chain place awesome and my wildest dreams?  No.. Will I be happy if it does great business and brings people to the area and they spend money?  Of course..  Think big picture.. not everything can be some trendy hipster place (stupid hipsters).

I'd sooner slash my throat than set foot in a TGIFChiliCheesecakeTuesdayOliveBees but the simple fact is those places serve a purpose, and while I personally loathe them, I can at least appreciate that their presence usually infers that the immediate area is highly trafficked with people with disposable income.

In addition to not liking the type of establishment... what i like the least is how it segments off just a portion of that building... it ensures that the idiots in charge of that building are going to piece meal it up.  I was really hoping for a more comprehensive approach to the ground floor of that building.  Though this is really a conversation probably best suited for the filling in euclid avenue thread...

I'm not exactly wowed by the idea of the medical mart fronting street level. I think it would be a waste of future, prime retail space.

There is a lot of space there for the mart, and street level retail could go on the ground floor.

Oh my God.. they're gonna section off the ground floor so a business can be successful!!  Forget it, lets put a huge restaurant in there that won't be able to draw enough business to meet its HUGE monthly rent payment, just so we can appease the peanut gallery of UrbanOhio..

Agreed, I think one single-use for the entire ground floor (especially if that use were simply showrooms for the medical mart), would be the biggest killer for street life in that section of Euclid.  Multiple street-level business will bring far more pedestrians to the area, and still leave plenty of contiguous building space for other uses.

We already have reached that milestone with the Tequila Ranch mechanical bull.

What would putting in a new groundfloor tenant do to the prospects of a comprehensive redevelopment of the building?  I was under the impression that they would have to do some serious work, probably demoing out an atrium in the middle of the building in order to make that space leasable.

My first thought is that this is a short-sighted project. I wish that someone with big thoughts and big follow-through could get their hands on this property.

 

Best case scenario: the owner fills up the ground floor with some decent tenants. Once Eli Mann and K&D develop their projects for Euclid, Jacobs puts up a tower on PS, and Stark puts some shovels in the ground--then I'd like to see something happen in the May Co. Building. Maybe a department store would go against the grain? Maybe some sort of mixed-use..

 

We have a gorgeous building on our hands and no real plans for it. Cadillac Ranch?--If it is still around in three years, I'll be surprised.

^I still can't believe there's no department stores downtown. The May and Higbee locations are still ideal and I'll hold out hope that someday they'll be utilized for just that. Until then I'll just have to keep watching "A Christmas Story" over and over.

This CaddyRanch sounds so "ick" and without having experiened one, seems like a one trick gimmick restaurant.

 

For those who can remember, May Company's first floor is multi leveled.  So this restaurant could be built in and the remainder of the building can still be built out in a way that it does not interfer with the restaurants operations.

 

If my memory serves me correctly, there was a cafe on the first floor near the hough bakery area.

No and I didnt even know there was a TGIF on Times Square.  Dave and Buster, Ruby Tuesday, Red Lobster, Bubba Gumps, Chillis, Apple Bee's etc. aren't my kind of places.  Yet, that is not to say I've never been in one.  Ruby Tuesday's grape martini is yummy.

 

Yes, I agree those places play a roll and make folks feel safe and are "family" oriented businesses.

 

I wouldn't mind if these place were lumped together near CSU (say on Prospect & Carneige or on Chester & Payne) or sprinkled throughtout downtown.

Oh goodie, another steak/pork chop party house. Why doesn't downtown Cleveland have a vegetarian restaurant in which NYC has 200+ of those!?! Not that I am against a shithole like this place filling in another void, I am positive I will never dine there. Hell, I thought Hoggy's in Valley View already epitomized this stuff. Vegeterranean in Akron is solid and I hope a developer can see how successful a vegan restaurant popped up in downtown Akron. But what is the difference between all these steak out places. The only difference between this place and a Ponderosa and Houlihan's is the name and logo.

^ I think what's bothering most people is the high profile location of this cheese house. Nobody wants our "technology corridor" and main street to look Niagara Falls tacky.

 

But if people want to come up here from the suburbs and go there, well, good for them. At least more people would be coming into downtown.

Quit bitching and go open one yourself if you think there's a huge veggie market that is being unfilled.  I'm gonna guess these places do studies before deciding to invest large sums of money to open a restaurant..
