July 21, 201014 yr I don't think high-end ritzy hotels really bring business travelers... I'm a businessman and I always prefer to stay in La Quitna's because of the free newspaper, dial-up Internet and low rates even with lots of amenities. after a long day of working n extremely important multi-hundred dollar contracts, business deals, etc. I need amentaties but also low rates. So I'd love to see one of those come to down town. Many companies have contracts with brands like Starwood, Hilton, Marriot and IHG (formerly know as Holiday Inn) all of those loyalty programs include high end hotels like W, Westin, St. Regis or the Luxury Collection for Starwood; Hilton has the Waldorf; Marriot has JW Marriot, Park Hyatt, Grand Hyatt, IHG has Inter-Contientals. When I was at BP we had Marriott and Hilton. Now my company has Starwood and Hyatt. Those contract drive sales to various brands. In addition, based on an employees level, there are probably company restrictions on Travel. such as what type of ticket you can buy or how much per night a hotel room you can book. For instance, Domestically, I can fly FC anywhere or sleep in a hotel room that cost up to $800 a night. But my subordinates who are SVP's can only fly BC if the flight is longer than four hours and they cannot stay in a hotel room that is more than $300 a night.
July 21, 201014 yr Also, many companies/organizations buy blocks of discounted rooms. I layover at anything from a 2-star to a 5-star hotel. The airline buys the rooms and pays for them whether they are used or not (cancelled flights, etc)

Also, to give an idea of the cost to the airline, I've stayed at 5-star properties and only paid $45.00/nite on the discount.

Before we bought the house in LA I was staying at the Peninsula at $600 a night. The thought of what I could do with that extra money.
July 30, 201014 yr I see construction for the apartments for the homeless has begun at Euclid and E. 75th - right?
October 1, 201014 yr A quick summary if what's being built on Midtown Euclid Ave: 1) Emerald Alliance V -- 7515 Euclid Ave 2) Euclid Corridor Senior Housing -- E. 73rd/E. 74th and Euclid Ave 3) "Authorizing the Director of Economic Development to enter into a Tax Increment Financing Agreement with Dunham Square Land, LLC, or its designee; to provide for the construction of a mutli-tenant office/technology center located at 6700 Euclid Avenue" http://planning.city.cleveland.oh.us/designreview/drcagenda/2010/093010/100110DraftAgenda.pdf I'm pretty sure that last one is across the street from Dunham Tavern.
October 1, 201014 yr ^Thanks for posting those! 6700 Euclid is the Geiss development: http://www.terrycoyne.com/ourproperties/detail.asp?id=208 Doesn't look like too much has changed with the two housing development designs since the last time they popped up. Nothing exciting, but not really offensive either. Decent street edge background stuff.
October 1, 201014 yr Well... if they are going to put subsidized housing on Euclid Avenue, I suppose around 75th is the best spot. I have more faith in Euclid growing out (over a long period of time) from CSU towards 55th and from the Clinic through UC, than I do for the area between 55th and and the Clinic.
October 4, 201014 yr this could maybe go into demos, but this thread is more specific... A good summary of Euclid Ave losses over the past few years: http://www.clevelandareahistory.com/2010/09/euclid-avenue-what-weve-lost-and-what.html
October 7, 201014 yr A nice little opinion: http://blog.cleveland.com/letters/2010/10/euclid_avenue_could_pave_way_t.html
October 8, 201014 yr Thanks MurrayHill, that was my letter. I live at Reserve Square and work in Landmark at Sherwin WIlliams. I was active on the forum here a few years back but took some time off to move back from Columbus, change jobs and do some other things in life. I plan to be back on here now, good to be here (again). The inspiration for writing that letter was a friend of mine who plans to move to San Francisco as soon as she can. I asked her why, and she said that the urban-ness is attractive, as well as the lack of need for a car. I agreed with her that it's tough to be in Cleveland without a car and that we need to work on that, but that I'll be interested in seeing where we are in a decade or two if the health care economy starts to take root along Euclid. It really could be the pathway to success - startups in UC, mid-size companies in Midtown, and larger established companies headquarterd downtown. You could even brand it, maybe the "innovation artery" to play on the heart theme.
October 13, 201014 yr Does anyone know what's been going on at Dunham Tavern? I thought they were finally repainting it. They had scaffolding on the right side and it looked like paint was chipped off the front window frames, but the scaffolding is gone and the front and side clapboards still have several tones of body color due apparently to poor paint matching. I see no sign of work being done each day. Are there still plans to demolish the ugly hulk to the tavern's left? The mural adds something positive but it's still a huge eyesore. And I mean HUGE. Sure I would have liked it rehabbed but I think that ship has sailed....
October 17, 201014 yr Was downtown last night for Blue Man Group. I noticed that the inside the first floor of the former NCB, now PNC building 4 story building along Euclid had steel framing going on inside (kind of across from 668). I didn't know if this was office renovation or perhaps new retail. New retail opening to the street between E6th and E9th would be awesome.
October 21, 201014 yr New retail? I'd say very unlikely. Unless the whole exterior facade is changed, this space has no exterior entrances so it would have to be a shop or shops off the lobby space. I'd assume this is just PNC-related offices going in. I did ask someone in the take-out place but - not suprisingly - she knew nothing. Yes, I'd really, really like to see more decent stores on the street!
October 21, 201014 yr I forget the name of the company that is putting in offices where you are describing. Rosetta maybe? EDIT: Is this what you are seeing? http://www.cleveland.com/business/index.ssf/2010/01/digital_agency_rosetta_plans_t.html
October 21, 201014 yr Yes, Rosetta software. What is happening in the building next door to 1010 Euclid? "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
October 21, 201014 yr I thought Rosetta is going into the old national city bank building. While not clear, it appears that urb-a saurus is describing the four story section of the newer NCB (now PNC) building which attaches the tower to the old section (although again not sure if that is his reference point). Don't believe Rosetta is going into that section.
October 21, 201014 yr Rosetta is taking up the top few floors in the back of the old national city building. They have nothing to do with the newer 4 story building
October 21, 201014 yr Those are PNC offices... just some interior office remodeling. Though they do have something called the memory project in there, open to the public which is a pretty cool exhibit with pictures and artifacts tracing to the founding of national city...
October 21, 201014 yr I'm referring to the first floor of the 1980s PNC building - to the east of the entrance right by the sidewalk. Rosetta is going to the old NCB building - to the roof area, if I recall. I think that construction is going on, too, because of the street's being closed off.
October 22, 201014 yr The unbroken wall is still there separating the construction area from the narrow hallway that has the exhibit. Wish they'd do away with the wall had have a wider, more inviting space for all those who pass through there every day. Whatever they're constructing could perhaps off that enlarged interior space. I've always thought that corridor is one of the dumbest spaces in downtown Cleveland. Most of the time there were just blank walls on both sides. Sometimes there has been an exhibit along the northern wall, such as there is now, which does make a difference.
October 22, 201014 yr Really wish there was some kind of rotating picture collection. Partially because I'm selfish, I walk by that wall every day and staring at the same pictures is a bit of a bore. Although I will admit that I do catch something new in each pic every once in a while. And it is really small, heaven forbid three people try to walk through there side by side at once.
October 25, 201014 yr Yes, it really has been a dumb space all these years. An uncomfortable space, so to speak.

Rosetta is going to the old NCB building - to the roof area, if I recall. I think that construction is going on, too, because of the street's being closed off. I work for Rosetta. (we do interactive digital marketing, btw. not really software) We'll be on floors 11-15 of the old National City building, plus we're building a new "penthouse" level on the roof, which will be level 17 (16 is a mechanical floor). It's construction of the penthouse level that's caused that crane to be parked on East 6th now and then. That will probably be the last floor to be completed, sometime in spring. Currently, there are people from Rosetta working in the building. I'm on in a temporary space on the third floor and some of my coworkers are on 12 and 13. Hopefully the 11th floor will be done soon (which is where I'll ultimately be) and when the rest is done, they'll shut down the Beachwood office and move everyone downtown. Sorry if this is off topic but just wanted to answer some speculation. No, the PNC renovations have nothing to do with us.

October 26, 201014 yr Thats the truman building... it is related to the schofield redevelopment, it has its own thread: http://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php/topic,21129.0.html
October 26, 201014 yr Thanks. I posted my thoughts there. "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck

They are seperate buildings I believe. The Holiday Inn Express is in the original NCB building that houses the large bank lobby. The building to the West of that is where Rosetta is moving. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.
October 26, 201014 yr I always believed that holiday in is just in the front part of the building. I think that Rosetta is moving into the back of the building, facing vincent.
October 28, 201014 yr I always believed that holiday in is just in the front part of the building. I think that Rosetta is moving into the back of the building, facing vincent. Correct. It's one building, but we're more in the back. Even though our address is 629 Euclid, we're really more on Vincent. And you can get to our elevators quicker by entering on Vincent than you can by entering on Euclid.
October 28, 201014 yr BTW, they changed the standpipe signs on the fron of the building to read "Rosetta Building" Any idea when they are planning on putting their name on the side that used to have the NCC ad? I thought I saw that on the Cleveland Planning site at one point.
October 28, 201014 yr This is indeed confusing. Is Rosetta going into the building at the corner of E. 6th or the building where the hotel is, which still has the bank lobby and has or did have the NCB sign on the east side? That's the one with the Maron's penthouse and I thought Rosetta is going into that bldg. next to the penthouse, on the Vincent side.
October 30, 201014 yr lafont - There's a couple of entrances along Euclid, so it's confusing as to where one building ends and where one begins. But to answer your question - Rosetta is going into the back of the building where the hotel is - they share the same historic hallway. Hotel is on Euclid, Rosetta is actually on Vincent. tedders55 - We internal renovations won't be done till early next year, so I'm guessing the external signage won't be for a bit.
November 3, 201014 yr Bldgs. not that confusing once one is outside. They were built different times, have different history. I see the construction on the roof of the larger building, which has the hotel, big lobby/hallway, etc.
December 13, 201014 yr Hey folks, I don't know know about you, but I'm having a hard time keeping track of all development projects occurring along Euclid Avenue. From downtown to the East Cleveland line, here is what I'm aware of and/or have questions about that is proposed, planned, under construction/renovation or built/renovated in the last 12 months: > Anything in the East 4th area? > Schofield Building, SW Corner East 9th, Rehab into 140-room Kimpton Hotel hotel, 24 apartments, and ground-floor restaurant; $40 million, PARTIALLY FUNDED. > Breuer Tower/Cleveland Trust Rotunda, SE corner East 9th, Rehab into hundreds of residential units and/or hotel units. December 13, 201014 yr ^I think you are missing the renovation of the Truman Building, The John Hartness Brown Building, and the Security Federal Building. These are all at different stages of funding/progress. Also, I don't think that you mentioned the expansion/remodeling of the Allen Theater. Then in Midtown, don't forget the Midtown Tech Center project. Lastly, did you include the MOCA relocation into the Uptown project?
December 13, 201014 yr The Art Museum could be included in this too even though its address is East Blvd. (? or Wade Dr.). It fronts on Euclid Ave. ^... Lastly, did you include the MOCA relocation into the Uptown project? Yeah, this should be it > Cleveland Museum of Contemporary Art, NE corner of Mayfield, New construction of its first permanent home; $27 million, UNDERWAY

I thought the Allen was already renovated? Is it being renovated again or differently? I can't keep track of the proposals and plans in the section from East 40th to East 79th, and I'm never sure what the Clinic or UH is up to. It looks like there's a new building going up at UH between the new Cancer Center and Adelbert. Is this the new Huntington Bank? EDIT: I UPDATED THE LIST WITH THESE PROJECTS: > Truman Building, 1030 Euclid, Rehab into 20 apartments; $12 million (includes neighboring Security Federal Building), UNDERWAY. > Security Federal, 1110 Euclid, Rehab into offices; cost is part of neighboring Truman Building rehab, UNDERWAY. > John Hartness Brown Buildings, 1001-1101 Euclid Ave., Rehab three adjoining buildings into hotel; $55 million, PLANNED. > Cowell & Hubbard, 1309 Euclid, Rehab into offices and educational facilities, with Kent State University's Cleveland Urban Design Collaborative the first tenant; unknown investment, UNDERWAY. > Woolworth Building, 1317 Euclid, Rehab into offices and ground-floor restaurant; $4 million, UNDERWAY. > Allen Theater, 1519 Euclid, Overhaul from a 2,500-seat theater to a three-venue, 1,000-seat complex for the Cleveland Play House; $30 million, UNDERWAY. December 13, 201014 yr I think you might be talking about the new emergency medicine building. The new Huntington bank branch is now in an addition to the first floor of the Triangle tower facing Mayfield.
