They moved into their new digs in October 2009. I'd like to keep this list to anything that opened in the past year, or is under construction, planned etc.

It's a very cool building, and helps add to that area's remarkable vibrancy that's getting more remarkably vibrant all the time.

What about THE Art Museum?

It is the largest cultural project in Ohio history.

This is where difficult choices have to be made. I'm leaving out projects that don't have addresses on Euclid, or if they don't does the building or an improvement relating to it touch a Euclid sidewalk?

So on that score I left out the art museum because it has an address of 11150 East Boulevard and no improvement involving the building comes close to Euclid. In fact it's farther from Euclid Avenue than these other projects.....

> Middough Building, 1901 East 13th Street, $30 million renovation by Playhouse Square Foundation.

> Courtyard by Marriott-University Circle hotel, 2030 Cornell Road, a $27 million new structure.

Tough calls. It's great that we have so many projects that we can be discriminating and still come up with a very long list of meaningful projects.

I believe RTA includes CMA when discussing the economic impact of the Euclid Corridor Project (in terms of total dollars invested in development projects).  While that claim is beyond speculative, you might as well throw CMA into the mix since the original 1916 building (which was renovated as part of the overall expansion project) fronts Euclid.

As well RTA should. But there are even more projects that aren't on Euclid (but may be only one building or two away from Euclid) that are likely a direct result of the HealthLine. But that's not what this list is about. This list is about filling in Euclid Avenue with new construction and renovated structures. And if it isn't "on Euclid" then I'm not including it. So there.

Fronts Euclid from a mile away. ;)  I wouldn't consider this a ECP project.

I'm not even listing ECP-spin off projects.

Well I don't think it's quite an entire mile from Euclid, MTS, but I see your point.  While I don't consider this a ECP project either, RTA assuredly does.  Thanks KJP for putting together your list of Euclid Ave. projects.

Does anyone know if there is any other work being done to the May Co. Building besides the work done for Cadillac Ranch and the Tri-C Hospitality Management Center and would that be added to the list?

^ Good suggestions.  the "Butcher Block" restaurant with chef Brandt Evans (awesome) is supposed to have its own entrance even though it is associated with Tri-C. I dont think that's enough to qualify for this list. (But I haven't heard much about this lately, maybe it's not going to happen)

KJP- you run a tight ship!

I can sort of understand your stance on the Art Museum. But beware of the ghost of Sherman Lee for dissing his House of Worship --- enter scary Vincent Price laugh --- LOL

Seriously, I think Cleve Hearing and Speech Ctr should be acknowledged, but that's just me.

Yep. Because I've seen lists grow into meaningless monsters if you don't keep 'em focused.

If anything, I made the list for my own selfish reasons. I wasn't able to keep track of what's-what along Euclid. So many projects are happening that I needed to take inventory. Thanks to you and others for your helping me get a better grasp on it.

Do you make a lot of lists for yourself?

Can anyone post an illustration of the huge thing going up at 6700 Euclid?  There was an illustration posted here maybe three months ago and, if it was ever correct, it sure is nothing like what is being constructed.  Fortuntely, there is a sign with illustration on the Carnegie side but no on Euclid, as far as I've seen lately. There was in the early construction weeks - looks like they moved it to Carnegie. In any case, it would be nice to have it here.

How about an illustration of the senior housing project to go up where the two highrise, twin apt. bldgs. are being demolished? I think its a real shame they were not saved (I know an architectural firm came out with a restoration/renovation proposal to save them for the senior use) so I hope the new construction is at least a decent design!

Sometimes, if I think it will cause a better appreciation or understanding of the scale of something.

Of course Marous finds it necessary to blatantly copy the building across the street, except with eifs and probably thin brick.

Yes, thanks.  The senior project proposal I had had for 6700 but it might have been my mistake. Since the two 1920s bldgs. are nearly obliterated (too bad restoration/renovation wasn't a higher priority), I hope construction begins very, very soon (and yes, I know it's virtually winter!).... At least put a decent illustrated sign up.

The large complex and the senior housing buildings in the pictures look very cheap material wise and as though they will begin to look shabby in a short amount of time unless meticulous maintenance is given to them. The senior housing building looks horrible IMO. Euclid deserves better than this but I know...we've been over all this.

Atleast the second building isnt what it will look like from Euclid

KJP ... I believe these 3 projects are merely planned, not underway.  There is not work happening now and no plans for work to officially begin in the next few months ... Truman Building, Security Building, Schofield Building

I've seen construction lights on in the evening in the Truman building, and I count the work that's been done with the Schofield thus far as "underway." Not sure where to place the Security Building, but since the developer is apparently undertaking these projects simultaneously I chose to list them all as "underway." Anyone else have thoughts about the status of these buildings as separate or combined projects?

"In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck

I believe the Security Building has been done for at least a year.  Isn't that the 2-story building next to Truman that used to house a FirstMerit Bank?  I believe the second floor was renovated into dental offices for the dentist previously located in Schofield.

I agree with sky on Schofield.  At this point, no work has been done other than removing the facade for the purpose of determining whether the building could be restored.  While a Kimpton Hotel is planned for the site, the developer hasn't closed on the financing package yet.  Thus, I would keep this one parked in the "planned" category at least until that happens.  As for Truman, it seems like only one or two workers have been in there cleaning the place out for the last several months.  No idea on when they plan to start the actual renovation work.  This project is to some extent tied to Schofield as the developers want to use the rear of Truman for hotel parking.  I don't know, however, if the financing being sought for the Schofield project also includes the Truman renovations.  If it does, I'd keep Truman parked in "planned" as well.

^ There's been quite a bit of interior demolition and other work on the Schofield, too, not just the façade removal.  McCleveland mentioned it a while back, I believe.

There was some interior demo work in Schofield as well, but until the financing is approved, the actual renovation is on hold.  As best I can tell, not a stitch of work has been done for going on one year.  Prudence suggests we wait for an announcement.

KJP it would be great if you can move your list to the beginning of the thread. It would also be great if a lot of the threads with multiple projects had an initial post that was updated as needed. Thanks for the list.

The only way the initial posting in each thread can include an "introduction" of sorts, like the one you have in mind, is for the author of that post to edit it, or for a moderator like me to edit it with their permission. I cannot move posts around within threads because they are ordered by the original posting date.

Glad you liked the list.

  • 2 weeks later...

A couple small, but important, retail items to post here.

first, at 2912 Euclid Ave directly across from the University Studios Apts (E. 30th & Euclid) a new coffee shop and hookah place called Pasha Cafe has opened. The gentleman in there tonight said food will be avaliable in a week or so . There is no sign up as of yet.

Down the street in Univ. Circle...the 'Circle Convenience' is closed for remodeling through the end of January, accdg to a notice on the door. This is in the same bldg as Luchita's Express, Falafel Cafe, etc. Good news here because the interior of this place was really subpar and, if memory serves me right, I don't think it had air conditioning. Walking around UC on hot summer days and then walking in here was not fun. Maybe that will change.

Correct about circle convienence .  I've heard they're reopening will line up with the returning case students from winter break.

College Town Plaza and walkway - finished, as far as I can tell. At least building was demolished a while back and the walkway looks aboaut finished.

Still need lights, some landscaping, and benches added to the plaza - but almost done!

Were you taking pictures today lafont?

The "Indian Flame" restaurant next to the Euclid Tavern is also getting a complete overhaul and will be reopening by Jan 1.

No.

Does anyone know the status of that jail project to straddle E. 59th?

^Jail?  Or the new county regional state psych hospital?

EDIT: oops, thanks KJP.

Good question though, anyone have any updates?

It's a state psych hospital, not county.

"In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck

i've heard that project is in flux, but nothing final has been determined.

Interesting.  I wonder if the state budget crunch will put this project on ice for a while.

Gotcha, I saw someone taking pictures that day of the building.

Interesting. I wonder if the state budget crunch will put this project on ice for a while.

It's actually a consolidation of two facilities into one, but the state may not be able to afford the construction costs even it if means saving operating costs over the long term. Sometimes it takes money to save money.

"In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck

So what are the two different institutions that are supposed to be combined here?

The transitional homeless housing looks nice, but I'm really not happy about any of these projects.  We needed to be more patient and more selective in redeveloping Euclid.  I sorta hope the state hospital doesn't happen, but even without it the tone is already set.  General public-- stay away.  This is not an urban main street, it's a series of private compounds.

@327 (and others) - I've heard a lot of discontent over these two developments, and also other general anti-urban policies along Euclid Avenue (the most recent being the new hotel up in U.C. requiring dramatic back setting from the street), and, you may recall, the new CSU buildings are all individual buildings set off of the sidewalk.

My question is, does anyone here talk to, or find themselves in conversations with government officials who can change this?  The City Council and Mayor can and should --must(?)-- be looking at the Euclid Corridor from the perspective we share.  Clearly a psych hospital in 2012 is less valuable than market rate apartments and commercial buildings (even if its in 2020 or so...)

Do any of you advocate directly?  Does UO have an avenue for this?
