May 11, 201114 yr KJP...I did not get the impression from the article that PH wants to build an actual 58 story building but just see 58 floors of residential in the district encompassing various new and old buildings. Of course that 58 number is kinda strange. Wonder where it came from?
May 11, 201114 yr KJP...I did not get the impression from the article that PH wants to build an actual 58 story building but just see 58 floors of residential in the district encompassing various new and old buildings. Of course that 58 number is kinda strange. Wonder where it came from? Dude. Please note the use of the emoticon and then the text in the following paragraph that starts with "But seriously...." May 11, 201114 yr What about 58 one story buildings all along Euclid Avenue in Midtown? How about that, 327?
May 11, 201114 yr Alright kids, settle down. clevelandskyscrapers.com Cleveland Skyscrapers on Instagram
May 11, 201114 yr With the "58 stories" they can start with eight floors or so in the two bldgs. whose facades have been left unfinished for maybe two years (three?). Nice they removed the mordern stuff but what a shame the developers started and didn't finish. Wonder who they convinced the loan them the money for what they started, or whatever way it worked....
May 11, 201114 yr "58 stories" is an odd target. I wonder how many units they want/see a market for. That would be a better unit of measurement. "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
May 11, 201114 yr "58 stories" is an odd target. I wonder how many units they want/see a market for. That would be a better unit of measurement. I imagine that 58 stories is their 'optimistic' target and that they have already identified "X" amount of floors for renovation in nearby buildings + some not yet released plans for new construction.
May 15, 201114 yr This sign plan for the Positively Cleveland CLE+ Visitors Center at East 4th and Euclid was on Thursday's Landmark Commission agenda..... http://planning.city.cleveland.oh.us/landmark/agenda/2011/05122011/index.php "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
May 15, 201114 yr ^Looks great! But I must say, we're not using our other threads... Playhouse Square and E.4th Street from above to be exact. It could get confusing when we start looking back for some of this info.
May 15, 201114 yr OK. I'll cross-post that image to the East 4th thread since the topic affects both Euclid and East 4th. "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
May 15, 201114 yr I've always wondered if something would be done to make that ugly white building next to the House of Blues somewhat presentable. I see there's a banner going up, but is anything going inside?
May 16, 201114 yr It's Art Deco and would look great if the window were kept attractive. They worked on the exterior when the corner bldg. was restored/renovated by the Marons. I could look it up but I'm quite sure there was a taller building there whereby the upper floors were removed and the first two floors remodeled with the present look - in the period when this sort of sculptured facade was "de rigeur."
May 16, 201114 yr I have no doubt that the building COULD look attractive, but I think it's ugly in its current state. It needs cleaned. It also looks like it needs another window, or some banners, on the upper level.
May 17, 201114 yr Look for a plaque at the base of that building and you'll see that is was awarded in 1937 (I think) as the best commercial structure of that year.
May 18, 201114 yr neat, I'll have to look for that. This is a cool little building of Art Moderne style.
May 18, 201114 yr Look for a plaque at the base of that building and you'll see that is was awarded in 1937 (I think) as the best commercial structure of that year. Is that the "relief" bumsquare mentioned?
May 20, 201114 yr "It's an eagle or a griffin or some other kinda fancy bird/animal". No, it's a human. A female sitting with an opened book.
May 21, 201114 yr http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2011/05/post_465.html Euclid Corridor got a huge honor, we should be proud as Clevelanders yet Cleveland.com posters have informed me otherwise. I guess all those times that I've ridden the healthline to go to street fests, theatre, restaurants among other things, those people I saw on the bus were all ghosts because nobody rides that busline.
May 21, 201114 yr I know you guys always say not to read those comments, but who are these people? How do they have the time in the day to constantly make all these negative comments on any city topic? Its never anything constructive being discussed, just "wah wah Cleveland sucks". Cleveland.com seems to be nothing more than a bunch of depressed, defeatist losers with no optimism at all for Cleveland's future.
May 21, 201114 yr My fiance yells at me not to read those comments but I can't help myself, it's just like when I used to watch Rush Limbaugh's TV show some years back. I think I like to get mad at these a-holes. Either that or I read it because it makes me feel a lot better about myself after thinking that I could have ended up like one of those people.
May 22, 201114 yr Just picture them in their mother's basements, sitting at their computers in their underwear. If you saw them in such a scene, would you bother to ask them for their opinion on ANYTHING? Of course not. And if that image doesn't prevent you from reading the drivel from these unemployable losers, nothing will. May 22, 201114 yr I'll be on the healthline today going out to Hessler street fair and eating at the Falafel cafe, I'll try not to get spooked at all the ghosts I see along the way. And KJP, are those boxers or tighty whities they're wearing? Makes a difference for my imagination.
May 23, 201114 yr Tighty whities. "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
May 24, 201114 yr Felafel Cafe - great place. Hessler was as wonderful as always! Wonder where people will park once parking lot at Ford and Euclid closed. We really lucked out - parked right behind Hillel!
May 24, 201114 yr Felafel Cafe - great place. Hessler was as wonderful as always! Wonder where people will park once parking lot at Ford and Euclid closed. We really lucked out - parked right behind Hillel! I live in Lakewood so I drive to 117th rapid and from there we had the option of either getting off downtown and taking the healthline (the one was did) or take it all the way to the cedar station and pick up the circle link. There are too many easy alternative options to drive there, I'd love for everyone that goes to start taking public transit. Especially since it's supposed to be an environmentally conscious event.
May 24, 201114 yr I had to drive there this year. I paid 6 bucks to park at the University Hospitals garage on Mayfield Road. Hopefully next year I will be able to just walk!
May 24, 201114 yr I parked on street at Magnolia and Mistletoe, then cut across the north residential village to get to Hessler.
May 26, 201114 yr Some news on Euclid I learned today while looking for space for my organization: -NASA will take the second floor of 7000 Euclid for some Research & Development. -Cleveland Clinic Moving into 7100 Euclid for offices -6700 Euclid starting to look really good and Jump Start (Company to help small businesses) moves in tomorrow, some other letters of intent and potential suitors for this space. -There is a red brick building right next to Dunham Tavern that has been purchased (not the huge eyesore across from Gallucis, but the east side of Dunham)...and apparently there are plans for restaurant to be there. Thats all.
May 26, 201114 yr That's all great to know. I thought 7100 Euclid (Baker Electric Building) was basically full, but apparently not.
May 26, 201114 yr 7000 Euclid- wasn't that the building that was supposed to be "Victory Lofts" a couple of years back?
May 26, 201114 yr ^ could have been. They have enviro clean-up right now, removing asbestos...building will be ready mid-September
May 26, 201114 yr They mention that in this article in Crains about 3rd frontier and the effort to win an International Space Station lab in NE Ohio. Ohio puts $2M behind effort to bring International Space Station lab to NE Ohio "SLA would not be based at NASA Glenn Research Center in Cleveland. Instead, it likely would be based in a soon-to-be renovated building adjacent to the new MidTown Tech Park on Euclid Avenue. NASA Glenn wants to remain neutral in the race for the space station lab so it might win work from whichever firm wins the contract." http://www.crainscleveland.com/article/20110525/FREE/110529926
May 27, 201114 yr From an e-mailed agenda.... Community and Economic Development Committee TUESDAY, May 31, 2011 9:30 a.m. MERCEDES COTNER COMMITTEE ROOM 217 CITY HALL Ord. May 28, 201114 yr Just a reminder Investors plan $55 million hotel project in historic Euclid Avenue buildings Published: Thursday, November 18, 2010, 6:05 PM Updated: Friday, November 19, 2010, 11:18 AM By Michelle Jarboe, http://www.cleveland.com/business/index.ssf/2010/11/investors_plan_55_million_hote.html The investors behind JHB Hotel have a signed letter of intent with an upscale brand, said Pete Whiskeman, a partner in the project. He declined to identify the brand but said the project would involve a 200-plus-room hotel, indoor parking and 12,000 to 13,000 square feet of ground-floor retail. The hotel would open in 2013, timed to the debut of the casino, the convention center and the medical mart, a planned showplace for medical devices.
June 1, 201114 yr Yes, 7000 used to have the "Victory Lofts" sign on it. Ca. 1980 it was the Arts Building. About that hulk to the west of Dunham Tavern: Who the hell owns it and what the hell are the plans for it? What the hell is going on there? It's the ugliest, ugliest monstrosity in the neighborhood.... :wtf:

It's the ugliest, ugliest monstrosity in the neighborhood.... :wtf: It was bought by RTA so they could hack off the front of it to widen Euclid for the bus lanes. RTA put a cosmetic front on that building so at least it doesn't look like an arm amputated with a pair of dull scissors pointing at Euclid. But it sure ain't pretty no matter what. RTA should have demolished the whole thing. "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
June 1, 201114 yr Yeah, the art is a slight improvement but sure wish they'd get rid of the whole enchalada pronto! I'd love it if it were beautfully renovated and put to good use but that ship has sailed, apparently. Really distracts from Dunham Tavern (when oh when will that historic structure be painted properly?) and the whole area!
June 1, 201114 yr Still hoping the mainly fire-destroyed half of Erie Square is saved (with plenty of insurance $, I suppose). The fact it's still standing - could that mean something?
June 1, 201114 yr ^ i thought i heard grumblings that the big eyesore would be raised.... Raised? To where would it be lifted? Oh, you mean RAZED!!!! As in demolished?? --- KJP, CORRECTING KIDS AND THEIR ENGLISH SINCE 1985 "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
June 16, 201113 yr Driving down Euclid this morning for the first time in a long time I was disappointed to see so many newer buildings only one or two stories high. To really populate this corridor I would like to see a lot more 4-6 story buildings filling in the empty spaces. Still, the corridor between University Circle and Public Squre seemed to be a lot livelier than I can ever remember.
June 16, 201113 yr The shorter buildings will help create density and activity (both of which were sorely lacking when this whole process started). In time, the momentum may entice a developer to build something bigger. Be patient.

To really populate this corridor I would like to see a lot more 4-6 story buildings filling in the empty spaces. Still, the corridor between University Circle and Public Squre seemed to be a lot livelier than I can ever remember. Agreed. Various stakeholders and decision-makers have seemed determined to "fill it in" ASAP at all costs, with no regard to its supposed status as the main street of a major city. The worst part is that so many of these inappropriate buildings were put there by government agencies and non-profits, who should be expected to show more concern for the present and future well being of their city. You don't see this sort of thing happening on High Street, Woodward Ave, or any equivalent anywhere. And we can't blame developers here when they're not the culprits. It's not clear to me how RTA putting pair of bus garages on Euclid, and Red Cross doing likewise, is in any way helpful to street activity. For that matter, the same could be said for the Pierre's ice cream expansion. Certainly not a bad thing, but unrelated to creating street activity because it's industrial rather than mixed-use. Thousands work at the Brook Park Ford complex, yet street actvity nearby hasn't picked up one bit. Street activity is generated in relation to the nature and purpose of a building... not all buildings are equal in this regard.
June 16, 201113 yr ^While I generally agree with the gist of your post (primarily that city officials our so happy to see somebody building something that they are not stressing good design or trying to implement an overall plan), if the High Street you are referencing is the one is Columbus, they just tore down a block of buildings and basically replaced it with a lawn (and I am pretty ignorant about Detroit but what if anything is getting built on Woodward)
