New NYC subway map unveiled by MTA. Here's what has changed.

A new New York City subway map has been unveiled by the MTA.

A lot has changed on the subway in the last 45 years, including stations, train cars, platforms, and even how we pay.

But one thing that stayed the same was the subway map.

That is, until now.

The tweaking phase is over

The MTA on Wednesday unveiled a new map of the subway system, replacing the old one that had been in use since 1979.

There is a noticeable difference.

The MTA says the new design makes key things easier to find, like express service versus local, transit hubs for connections, and ADA accessibility guidelines. CBS NEWS NEW YORK

although I haven't seen it fully yet, this doesn't look too similar to the iconic 1972 subway map by Italian designer Massimo Vignelli that people ended up complaining about because it looked too stylistic, does it?  🤔

  • Huh, a correlation between housing/healthcare and a perception of safety on the subway. Ditto for opinions by people who don't ride it often. Who'da thought that...

  • Good. I hated this plan. Instead, extend the N/Q train from Astoria/Ditmars through LaGuardia over to the #7 train line and become the new #7 express into Manhattan with a stop added at 74th/Broadway

Congestion pricing: MTA shows traffic drops, subway ridership increases as Manhattan toll program’s long-term future hangs in balance

Congestion pricing’s long-term future remains uncertain thanks to a pending court case between the MTA and Trump’s Transportation Department — yet new statistics show that the Manhattan toll program appears to be achieving two primary goals: lowering traffic and bringing more riders into the subways.

The latest MTA data showed that on average, 560,405 vehicles entered the Central Business District (CBD) of Manhattan below 60th Street daily during March 2025, down 13% from the daily baseline historical average of 642,500 vehicles into the zone. Over the course of the entire month, the MTA said congestion pricing led to 2,544,945 fewer entries into the CBD.

MTA Holds First Public Open House For NYC’s Light Rail Connecting Brooklyn & Queens

More progress is underway for the interborough express, a new light rail that will connect 20 neighborhoods between Brooklyn and Queens.

Justine Golata  JUSTINE GOLATA - SENIOR STAFF WRITER • APRIL 4, 2025

Queens residents were privy to a first look at the initial plans for the Interborough Express (IBX), NYC’s upcoming light rail that will connect Brooklyn and Queens, at MTA’s first public open house on the project.

IBX status
Sources say MTA is currently looking to select an engineering firm for the project. However, the IBX will depend on proper funding and the MTA’s proposed 2025-2029 capital plan has yet to receive approval. Project executive for the MTA, Charlie Gans, expressed that they are focused on the capital program and hoping all goes to plan. If so, “we can basically take off like a rocket,” he remarked.

The next open house will be held in Brooklyn on April 3rd, 2025 at South Shore High School.

For those with a NYT subscription, a fascinating (and somewhat scary) look into how the trains are actually operated and controlled:

Deep inside a subway station in Brooklyn, in a cramped, industrial room, Dyanesha Pryor pushes in a metal lever on a hulking machine that was installed nearly a century ago. A few hundred feet away, a signal light flashes red and a train that had been rumbling down the local tracks slides to a stop.

Ms. Pryor, a transit worker, pulls another lever and a section of rail shifts into place, allowing the local train to merge onto a shared track in front of a waiting express train. She then restores the signal to green and the local rolls into the station.
