March 19, 201510 yr Some pics from today (3-18-15) Wow, a boots on the ground update! Thanks! https://www.instagram.com/cle_and_beyond/https://www.instagram.com/jbkaufer/

March 24, 201510 yr There was a set of pictures a while back that had a red-based scheme that looked very dated. This is much better. I like the blue scheme

March 24, 201510 yr The curtains are bugging me. Maybe the need to b more neutral in tone or maybe ironed out?? I don't know.
March 24, 201510 yr The decor is not modern enough for the hotel structure. It a step in the right direction, but there needs to be more straight lines....and get rid of those ugly 80s curvy chairs!!
March 24, 201510 yr A time-lapse video is now posted on the webcam portion of the project website. It stops at roughly November is construction sequence. http://www.cuyahogacounty.us/en-US/earthcam.aspx https://www.instagram.com/cle_and_beyond/https://www.instagram.com/jbkaufer/
March 24, 201510 yr While the room design appears to be going through revisions a couple of notes I have. 1. The blue is a much calmer aesthetic. 2. The curved shape counter fights all architectural choices for the hotel design. Everything has to to do with hard edges or triangular shapes. Even the use of a bridge underbelly as an artistic wallpaper 3. The contemporary feel is clean just not unique. Most has to do with The Hilton brand. As for the hotel architecture. 1. Architectural details that were detailed in the renderings have definitely been altered for budget concerns. It appears the cornice along The Lakeside facade was eliminated as well as the setback for an outdoor overlook. I am disappointed these changes occurred since the cornice/roof overhang defined the height of the existing Group Plan buildings.
March 25, 201510 yr ^ That's really disappointing. Are you certain that the cornice was eliminated? Does that mean there will be no overhang anywhere on the podium?
March 25, 201510 yr That is disappointing indeed. Hopefully they will still add the steel components that line up with the canopy supports to break up the uninteresting flat curtain wall look we currently have. https://www.instagram.com/cle_and_beyond/https://www.instagram.com/jbkaufer/
March 25, 201510 yr ^ I think dave is just speculating based on the recent pictures. Unless he's an architect or something involved with the project.
March 25, 201510 yr It appears that a bunch of metal poles are sticking up along the top of the edges of the podium roof. I'm no expert, but this would suggest further construction of something on the roof, no? Would this perhaps be the overhang? My camera phone is terrible so I can't really take any pics to show what I mean.
March 25, 201510 yr ^ Or they could be a safety rail for the workers. A few of the pictures showed a metal wire connecting each pole.
March 25, 201510 yr ^That would be my guess as well. I believe providing a safety rail of some sort is an OSHA requirement during construction projects. Note the wood rails on all the tower floors. https://www.instagram.com/cle_and_beyond/https://www.instagram.com/jbkaufer/
March 25, 201510 yr Ahh I see, that makes sense. I think I'm just trying to delude myself into believing that the overhang will be there. I'm probably setting myself up for disappointment. Not that the original design was particularly inspiring, but they sure did everything they could to remove as many interesting architectural details as possible. Now it's on track to be a pretty bland and forgettable building. Meh.
Meh. So, the whole building is now "bland and forgettable" because the cornice and setback have been eliminated? That's a bit of an overreaction. There is much more to the building than that.
March 25, 201510 yr Well, I didn't think it was anything special to begin with anyway. I don't mind the loss of the patio, but the cornice is a big loss imo. Oh well, I guess the light strip going up the side of the building will still be cool (unless that has also been removed).
March 25, 201510 yr Some details are clearly gone like the fourth floor patio area. However, I would wait a bit before worrying about other design changes. The ornamentation is probably the last thing(s) installed. For example, somebody upthread was worried the horizontal blocks that wrap around the corners were nixed because they weren't installed yet. If you look at the recent photos there is clearly a mounting point on the corner where the blocks would be installed. Be patient. There is still a year to go.
March 25, 201510 yr I'd actually think they'd be one of the last things installed. They block crane access to the building and would get in the way of anything being lifted to roof garden level.
March 29, 201510 yr Also, it appears that they removed the horizontal details on the concrete part of the "podium." How much are they going to dumb down the design before it's finished? Here is a shot of the horizontal lines on the Ontario side. Not as defined as the rendering but I snapped this while stopped at the light.
March 30, 201510 yr It concerns me how many details were altered from the architectural renderings to the actual execution. I am fine with adjustments but none appear for the better.
March 30, 201510 yr As I stated upthread, this is what you get with a design-build project. Don't let it concern you, nor should you lose sleep over it... Things change. Some for better, some for worse. I don't think I've seen an architectural rendering that has not changed throughout the course of a project. Again, the basic premise is the same... We get a 32 story, modern high-rise with a pretty cool design. This is something we couldn't have dreamed of years ago, and now we like to nitpick it to death.
March 30, 201510 yr The nitpick is what was presented is not what is being told. When a rendering shows certain details that the public were shown to be factual we have every right to question the changes. When I render and the details do not match I am questioned. So should the design build team.
March 30, 201510 yr Questioning is fine. More often then not though as mentioned many times in this thread the reason for details not being there could be they are being added later or they were cut for budget reasons.

April 3, 201510 yr On the other hand, hasn't a top floor bar been added since the first designs came out?

April 4, 201510 yr Hilton Cleveland reaches construction milestone 4:07 p.m. EDT April 3, 2015 CLEVELAND -- Hilton Cleveland in downtown Cleveland raises the tower crane Friday, reaching another milestone in its construction. The crane moved an additional 80 feet, placing it 350 feet in the air to continue construction moving up the tower. April 4, 201510 yr Clefan98[/member] yeah... I think it's supposed to be around 380ft. I'm not 100% sure (im not on the project, just involved through the office), but I can confirm.

April 9, 201510 yr ^From the article: "Anticipated milestones include completion of the hotel tower by September 18, with completion of the hotel's facades a month later. "You're going to see some pretty dramatic work on that tower this summer," Appelbaum said." The article also says about 12 stories of the tower are complete, so by September they should be done with all 32 floors...completing 20 floors in about 20 weeks...should be fun to watch!

April 10, 201510 yr oh that looks very good. bright and airy. i dk about the steel girders sculpture thing dangling overhead tho, that looks a little scary lol!
April 10, 201510 yr I see they've hired an interior designer that has no understanding of how to design within the styles of the building. Unnecessary curves are a signature of a mediocre interior designer.
April 10, 201510 yr One man's opinion https://www.instagram.com/cle_and_beyond/https://www.instagram.com/jbkaufer/
April 10, 201510 yr Actually that's a pretty common opinion. Being unable to relate the exterior massing/design to the interior shows an inability to create a cohesive product and to work alongside the architects and a sense of "I know better than the people designing the building" which is often the cause of poor relations between interior designers and architects.
April 10, 201510 yr i dk about the steel girders sculpture thing dangling overhead tho, that looks a little scary lol! Not to worry, they'll be value-engineered out.
