Oh, and looks like they're finally starting on the steelwork for the large triangular structure on top! Exciting.

As a Cuyahoga County resident, I am a part owner of the downtown Cleveland Hilton.  In the interest of checking up on my investment, and because I had a free night certificate that was about to expire

^God must be staying in one of those rooms.

^ Can't be.  The GOP convention isn't til next year.

Why did they nix the designs on the potium such as the balcony on the side and the built-out portion in the back? Was it due to costs? I hope the final product looks better because it looks like a glass box right now.

It will always look like a glass box.  The exterior is...glass.

One may even go so far as to describe the general form as box-like.

I'm not an architect, but it's looking great to me...beautiful building and it has added a lot of "GLASS" to the Cleveland skyline which is much needed!  IMHO most cities have lots of "box like" buildings using all kinds of materials to clad them. LOL

I agree with you Larry. I am not an architect either, but I am a professional visual artist and designer with an eye for good architecture. And, in my opinion, when completed this building will represent excellent architecture, and almost sculptural design. The reflective glass curtains wall makes it appear interesting from different angles depending on the vantage point of the viewer and the color and quality of light being reflected in its glass skin. It is far from boxy, even at this unfinished stage.

I'm still (pleasantly) surprised at the quality of this building, considering the architectural firm that designed it. Nothing against Cooper Carry, but I was NOT impressed with their hospitality portfolio when I first browsed through it. I think the Cleveland Hilton is going to be the standout best project on their hospitality portfolio (though I'm also a fan of the DC Marriott Marquis).

Hello folks!  Since most of you are avid followers of the Hilton Cleveland Downtown, I need your help. As you may know the hotel is trying to do a special art piece which will be located in the lower lobby that connects the hotel to the convention center.  It is a photo mosaic mural using photos submitted by  Clevelanders. The mosaic mural is hoped to be quite large so when you come to visit the hotel you can find your image as a permanent part of the building. We are woefully short on submissions. We just created a hashtag #myclephoto where you can post your pictures (as many as you want) or you can go to myclevelandphoto.com to submit. There will be a drawing where someone can win a weekend stay at the hotel. Please spread the word. We need about 2000 more images to make a big mural.  Thanks!

Awesome- thanks for the heads up!

Welcome, myclephoto. You've come to the right place! I will also copy your post into the Cleveland Random Photos thread here at UO.

Fantastic!  One thing to note is ideally the pictures should be of you, family or friends in front of your favorite Cleveland background. That way you can find yourself on the mural.

Does anyone know if thehotel will have the strip of light going up the building at night like the renderings?

Absolutely

Cool.

New downtown Hilton hotel heads into home stretch

September 27, 2015

By DAN SHINGLER

On the heels of a long, fairly dry and very productive summer construction season, the exterior of the Hilton Convention Center Hotel in downtown Cleveland is nearing completion.

The interior rooms don't yet have the luster they'll be showing off next year, but the shell and frame of the building are nearly done, and topping off ceremonies are planned for Thursday, Oct. 1.

It's already a gleaming major feature on the Cleveland skyline.

another pic of the light strip !

Pretty cool! Although I wouldn't want that light strip outside of my hotel room window...  :-P

tumblr_mcdp170R411qza49co1_500.png

I'm wondering if they will be able to control the brightness and colors of the strip.

oh i didnt realize they were going to do that. i like it, its pretty cool to have some of that kind of lighting downtown.

yes hopefully its done in such a way as to not bother the guests who are trying to look out the windows at night or sleep!

They have the frame up for the crown on top of the building, if you want to call it that.  So now I think we see the final height.

Thanks! Great angle and detail! Too bad it's not as tall as the Justice Center.

Looks like they'll be able to get this fully enclosed and the crane removed by winter. Then it's all interior buildouts, which is fine work to do while January rages outside.

Beautiful pics.  This is easily going to become one of my favorite buildings in the city.

I was flying into CLE on a redeye this morning and got a very brief view of downtown and saw the strip lit up from over the lake. I thought to myself, "that almost looks like where I the Hilton's diagonal light would be." But then I talked myself out of it, thinking it was something else that I was seeing. It was quite bright from far away ... awesome!

From the Hilton website... Some interesting things here. I will be interested in who the chef will be, but sounds nice!

RESTAURANT WITH A VIEW

Our three-meal-a-day restaurant will be a showcase to one of Cleveland’s most prominent and popular chefs. His international menu will reflect the uniqueness of the three levels of our modern 224-seat restaurant, designed around the all-glass window views. On the upper level, our culinary team will delight our Guests with a fine-dining experience encompassed around the world of flavors. On the lower glass-front level viewing the courtyard and Zen Garden, Guests will be introduced to a more casual version of the chef’s specialties. Then, our casual menu will overflow into what will be everyone’s favorite area: our expansive outdoor patio, shaded by cantilever umbrellas. A private dining room will also be available for special event reservations.

Haha I'm almost positive that's a placeholder

^ Oh thank God

Only open until 11pm on the weekends??

Only open until 11pm on the weekends??

I suspect that would change to later hours, based on its popularity, etc.

I would say 11PM is probably accurate.  I don't think they're going for Cleveland's "after hours" crowd trampling through the Hotel Lobby and elevators at 2AM en route from the Velvet Dog.  Not to mention, they're back open for breakfast at 6AM.

Who is this prominent chef they speak of

"Prominent Chef", you know, he has that place, "Highly Regarded Restaurant" over in "Trendy Neighborhood".

Looks like they're going to narrow the existing car ramp and cover the vacated portion as a pedestrian connector....

My educated guess to the Chef would be Chris Hodgson/Driftwood group because they operate the restaurants Sanctuary in the Doubletree (Hilton) in Beachwood and Westlake

  • 2 weeks later...

A couple more pictures of the Hilton. The light strip looks like it's installed inside the glass facade. It's very bright and lights up the interior hallway (stairwell? I can't tell). The other picture is nothing special. I just thought the reflection was kind of neat.

Thanks for the photos Mendo. I have to tell you, as an artist I am loving this building. It reflects the infinite variety of the light and color of Cleveland with such drama. Each day, and every angle is different. Check out the Oct. 16th still shots from camera 3 from 8:30-11:30.

A few pictures from a tour of the hotel.  I'll post all of them in a photo thread.

The hotel room ceiling heights will be 8'-3".

Drywall pieces are coming out factory cut to reduce waste and cutting time.

Many electrical and plumbing components come to each floor precut to length or pre-assembled.

Convention Center roof and angled section were the inspiration for the angled section of curtain wall that tilts out.

The Grand Ballroom is 21,000 sf.  Second largest in Cleveland.

The hotel room finishes were rather drab.  The theme murals are cool but beige wall covering with beige tile in the bathrooms.... yuck.
