January 11, 201411 yr Since they are going to have the more elaborate foundation, they might as well build higher too! I know, that would add to the cost which is why that is not going to happen. I agree with the assessment of above of not have many tall buildings due to demand/economics. It is just too difficult to fill up the office space for a taller building in this market unless there is a major tenant signed up ahead of time. Both of the two newer tall buildings (BP and Key Bank) had these tenants committed to the space before they were built. So, buildings between 20 and 25 stories seem to be the sweet spot for Cleveland. Also I don't think you want tall buildings near/on the waterfront because of the resulting shadows cast. Especially since our shoreline is northern oriented.
January 11, 201411 yr Also I don't think you want tall buildings near/on the waterfront because of the resulting shadows cast. Especially since our shoreline is northern oriented. So then the shadows are cast on the water. I doubt the fish mind. I don't like having the having the tallest buildings near the shoreline because they monopolize the lake views. I'm a more democratic guy and believe the buildings should be "stepped down" the closer you get to the water's edge so they more tenants can enjoy the lake views. Fortunately, the 31-story hotel is pretty far back from the shoreline. "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
January 11, 201411 yr Fortunately, the 31-story hotel is pretty far back from the shoreline. And reason enough to put 10 stories of apartment/condos on top! ;)

Fortunately, the 31-story hotel is pretty far back from the shoreline. Shade = cold and dreary. Having a northern oriented shoreline means less time in the sun. Add that the city is "behind" us and you could theoretically shade out the entire shoreline with tall buildings.
January 12, 201411 yr I think shade means cool and comfortable. What waterfront on earth tries to block out the sun? Unless you're Montgomery Burns on the Simpsons ha ha. Anyhow even I can see this is off topic.
January 12, 201411 yr Saw my sister-in-law's sister at a family party yesterday; she works for the county and used to work in the County Admin Bldg. She told me the demolition is starting next week, but no clue as to how reliable of a source she is. ;-)
January 13, 201411 yr Oh, she also commented on how chock-full of cockroaches the building is (was?). Yuck!! Hopefully they don't save those for the new hotel, lol.
January 13, 201411 yr Oh, she also commented on how chock-full of cockroaches the building is (was?). Yuck!! Hopefully they don't save those for the new hotel, lol. They'll just move to the medmart/convention center. Hope they have a good exterminator.

January 13, 201411 yr I read a post somewhere that mentioned they are starting abatement work in the building right now and then demolition will commence. https://www.instagram.com/cle_and_beyond/https://www.instagram.com/jbkaufer/
January 14, 201411 yr I like 'em! The one on the right is definitely a nod to the Group Plan but looks "forced." "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck

January 27, 201411 yr They might have the building demolished by the time anyone has the courage to step outside and pay the site a visit. But Ed stepped outside for this photo op.... January 28, 201411 yr wow i wouldn't think they got that much done already i thought it would be less.
January 28, 201411 yr That's one building I will NOT miss. Too bad they aren't using dynamite :shoot:
January 28, 201411 yr Man, it's such a tease seeing those wrecking cranes so close to the Justice Center!
January 28, 201411 yr Someone at The Greater Cleveland Film Commission should be working with the Hollywood crowd to take advantage of these demos in future movies
January 28, 201411 yr That's one building I will NOT miss. We've had worse, looks-wise. But it's size and scale are to minimal for this important parcel. The hotel, obviously, is a far superior use... so good riddance!
January 28, 201411 yr there's an new article on Cleveland.com about the demolition. the have some cool photos of the demolition.

February 1, 201411 yr Of course, now that you've shown us that, we will demand that you take daily construction shots of the new hotel when it starts to rise.
February 1, 201411 yr Live from the Justice Center (over the last couple of days... and sorry for the reflections)] Beautiful destruction. Can you delete the pics from your quote? Scrolling through them twice is annoying.
