Since they are going to have the more elaborate foundation, they might as well build higher too!

I know, that would add to the cost which is why that is not going to happen.

I agree with the assessment of above of not have many tall buildings due to demand/economics.  It is just too difficult to fill up the office space for a taller building in this market unless there is a major tenant signed up ahead of time.  Both of the two newer tall buildings (BP and Key Bank) had these tenants committed to the space before they were built.  So, buildings between 20 and 25 stories seem to be the sweet spot for Cleveland.

Also I don't think you want tall buildings near/on the waterfront because of the resulting shadows cast. Especially since our shoreline is northern oriented.

As a Cuyahoga County resident, I am a part owner of the downtown Cleveland Hilton.  In the interest of checking up on my investment, and because I had a free night certificate that was about to expire

So then the shadows are cast on the water. I doubt the fish mind. I don't like having the having the tallest buildings near the shoreline because they monopolize the lake views. I'm a more democratic guy and believe the buildings should be "stepped down" the closer you get to the water's edge so they more tenants can enjoy the lake views.

Fortunately, the 31-story hotel is pretty far back from the shoreline.

And reason enough to put 10 stories of apartment/condos on top! ;)

Shade = cold and dreary. Having a northern oriented shoreline means less time in the sun. Add that the city is "behind" us and you could theoretically shade out the entire shoreline with tall buildings.

I think shade means cool and comfortable.

What waterfront on earth tries to block out the sun? Unless you're Montgomery Burns on the Simpsons ha ha.

Anyhow even I can see this is off topic.

Saw my sister-in-law's sister at a family party yesterday; she works for the county and used to work in the County Admin Bldg. She told me the demolition is starting next week, but no clue as to how reliable of a source she is. ;-)

shes probably right, the barricades have been up for a few weeks.

Oh, she also commented on how chock-full of cockroaches the building is (was?). Yuck!! Hopefully they don't save those for the new hotel, lol.

They'll just move to the medmart/convention center.  Hope they have a good exterminator.

LOL yes these are the kinds of problems I wish we had in Cleveland.  Pi$$ing off the beach goers is not one of them!

Some earlier concepts.

I like 'em! The one on the right is definitely a nod to the Group Plan but looks "forced."

I like the one on the right but with a square tower.

When is the next round of design presentations scheduled?

they had catching some sun and views in mind with the one on the left.

I saw two large machines being unloaded this morning.  No one will miss this building.

after demolition, it will be nice to see another skyscraper crain.

has there been any demolition equipment dropped off over the weekend?

Channel 3 news says that demolition will start tomorrow.

good to get it down while its cold - i hope somebody can stop by on occasion and get us demo pics?!

They might have the building demolished by the time anyone has the courage to step outside and pay the site a visit.

But Ed stepped outside for this photo op....

Walked by to see the action today.  Sorry for the angles, I was in a bit of a rush - it was freakin' cold!

Looking into the cleared building

wow i wouldn't think they got that much done already i thought it would be less.

That's one building I will NOT miss.

Too bad they aren't using dynamite  :shoot:

Man, it's such a tease seeing those wrecking cranes so close to the Justice Center!

Someone at The Greater Cleveland Film Commission should be working with the Hollywood crowd to take advantage of these demos in future movies

We've had worse, looks-wise.  But it's size and scale are to minimal for this important parcel.  The hotel, obviously, is a far superior use... so good riddance!

there's an new article on Cleveland.com about the demolition. the have some cool photos of the demolition.

Beautiful destruction.

Wow those are fantastic, thnx for that.

Of course, now that you've shown us that, we will demand that you take daily construction shots of the new hotel when it starts to rise.

Can you delete the pics from your quote? Scrolling through them twice is annoying.

There will be a webcam soon

^Nice!

And of course I'll add pics when I can- maybe from a different angle if there will be a webcam soon.

when will the web cam be online?
