Let's look on the bright side, people! The Justice Center is now completely blocked when you're looking west on the Mall.

As a Cuyahoga County resident, I am a part owner of the downtown Cleveland Hilton.  In the interest of checking up on my investment, and because I had a free night certificate that was about to expire

Project update/August 2015

CONSTRUCTION Drywall is progressing in the Podium lobby.  8/25/15 What has been completed: •More than 32,217 cubic yards of concrete placed. •More than 130,000 square feet of glass curtainwall façade panels installed. •More than 16,000 square feet of insulated metal panels installed. •More than 139,126 lineal feet of mechanical, plumbing, and sprinkler piping installed. •More than 711,200 lineal feet of electrical conduit and wire placed. •More than 222,000 pounds of sheet metal ductwork installed. •More than 227,235 square feet of drywall mounted. Through August 2015, a total of approximately 601,500 manhours have been performed on the project, and more than 1,525 people have come onsite for construction.

SCHEDULE Construction continues to remain on-schedule! •Concrete construction is complete through Level 33. •Mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection conduits, duct, and piping are progressing through Level 24 and will continue up the building as areas become available. •Interior walls are progressing through Level 21 and will continue up the building as areas become available. •Glass curtainwall panel installation is progressing through Level 26 of the Tower. •Metal panel façade installation is complete. •Installation of exterior steel at the North canopy has begun. •Installation of the interior elevators is progressing in both concrete elevator cores. •Installation of the Podium escalators is continuing. •Interior painting, flooring, and drywall are progressing in the Podium. •Installation of kitchen equipment in the Podium is progressing. •The temporary construction hoists are operational to Level 31. •Exterior sitework has begun

I can't tell which part is going to be the rooftop bar in the live cam pictures. Does anybody know? Also, what are they doing to the top of the building? It looks like they are still adding floors.

Hopefully they took my advice and are adding 10 floors of condos....

I wonder why the furthest north post was not evenly spaced as the others along West Mall Drive.  Has anyone else noticed this?

One more on a hot and humid Cleveland morning.

Wow. It looks like they placed tat least two stories of glass on the Mall side since I took my photos on the 21st

Here is my contribution to the thread from some sightseeing the fiancee and I did last week.

Staycation???

Right. They seem to be average one story per week.

Staycation???

Yes. We have a wedding to pay for next year, ya know.

Ya know in the Philippines it's customary for the brides family to pay for everything*

*not sure if that's true, but worth a shot

I wonder what's going on at the top of the building now... The building has nice height (not quite as tall as I wanted) but I'll take it....

I'll take some pictures this week with my ZOOM lens. You can see where they are building the roof bar and outside patio. According to the renderings the roof will pitch upwards to appear taller. Not sure if this is to hide mechanicals?

I have attached the rendering for reference. It appears the angled section above the bar is a skeletal glass surround.

It looks to me like they are working in and around the SkyBar area. The roof area of the bar they seem to be erecting now will become the platform structure on which the angled roof section will sit--this is only my guess from analyzing the illustrations of the most recent design. It is very interesting to witness the emergence of the SkyBar though, isn't it? This building will be a very nice addition to the Cleveland skyline.

As promised:

Thanks!  Nifty Camera

Its really neat how you can easily see the old Coast Guard station in the 2nd picture, when I normally would not have thought these two projects related in any other way.

you gotta get that first picture again when the hotel is done

lakewood too - i saw what you did there mister lol! great to see these.

I just noticed cutouts in the flooring past the elevator shaft closest to Lakeside.  Can anyone explain what they're supposed to be for?

^ Fireman's pole.

[off-topic] The Gold Coast seems so much more dense from a distance than it actually is.

Skylight for the lobby? lol.  In all seriousness, plans show fire escape stairs in this area. The outer glass wall will have a slight enclosed solid wall setback from the glass

could they be running vents or pipes in that area? idk

20,000 people in one square mile is pretty dense.

Cool pics!

Nope, all the pictures were taken from One Cleveland Center. 30th floor

What I find fascinating are the following comparisons Mr Applebaum stated on the too expensive to build 300 spaces under the podium.  "That parking right now beneath the surface is about $60,000 per space, obviously very expensive to build that parking down there," said Appelbaum, who added they will look at alternate parking solutions but it's nothing that will slow work on the project" 300 spaces x $60,000  = $18,000,00    Huntington Parking  upgrades/rehabilitation cost 18 million dollars plus now more money for an underground walkway and an additional half a million dollars to study the feasibility!  Sad

^I'm sure the hotel project is accelerating the schedule, but I thought the improvements to Huntington were needed regardless. Isn't that garage in terrible shape?

^I'm sure the hotel project is accelerating the schedule, but I thought the improvements to Huntington were needed regardless. Isn't that garage in terrible shape?

it is but the idea that parking could have been attached at the same price as what they are dumping into the Huntington Garage seems wrong

I hadn't realized until now the Hilton was being built without its own underground garage.  So now they want to drill a tunnel?  I'm not quite clear on the engineering plan.  How much extra capacity does Huntington have?  It seems really late in the game to be studying feasibility on any aspect of this.

^The parking in Huntington is already lined up to be allocated to the hotel. I think they are prepared to go ahead without a tunnel, and to rely heavily on valets. There were a few Cleveland.com articles about the topic a year or so ago. Taking a closer look now seems to be a result of having money left over in the contingency fund and maybe a better understanding of some of the engineering that would be required.

From what I remember, they nixed the garage below the hotel when they determined they'd have to drill caissons for the tower footing. They said it became "too expensive" to do both. Here we are over a year later trying to cobble together extra money to make the Huntington garage work. The $18 million renovation is supposed to increase the number of spaces in the garage since the valet section would allow for cramming more cars into tighter spaces (and double parking).

Never trust renderings... I wasn't impressed. I'm loving this building, it is adding some great diversity to the skyline. Although if built a little bit more south it would almost cover up the justice building!

^^Not only that, but the Huntington is used Monday thru Friday pretty heavily by both city of Cleveland and County workers.  If the renovation does not include an increase in spaces, there are bound to be some upset workers in the near future who pay monthly to use the garage.

^ True but the county moving to E.9th and Prospect freed up 600ish spaces at Huntington.

How many businesses/buildings have leases with the Huntington Garage with allotted spaces?  Will this remain as an open garage for all or every space assigned?

My thought is the Hilton people have been talking to the people at the 9.... THE BIGGEST issue there is people waiting 30, 40 minutes for their car in a busy weekend night. That's with valet only a block away in the county administration garage on prospect..

This project is so bizarre to watch on the webcam. Over the last month or so, they'd built what looked like a double-height floor on the top of the southern end of the hotel. I kept thinking that seemed to be different from what the rendering showed. Now, over the last 24 hours, they seem to be dismantling it. So odd.

I think what you were seeing in earlier photos was the scaffolding as they constructed what you see currently in the webcam. Then they took it down after they were completed. If you look at the renderings it's as if the top structure is pretty open so I wouldn't imagine there would be too much structure at the top.

Looks to me like they shifted the stair tower further north than the original plans.  Plans showed the stairs right adjacent to the elevators.

Does anyone have pictures of the back of the hotel construction? I want to see what they completed as they are removing the scaffolding from the south part of the building..

Does anyone know what's going on at the top of the building?  They had it build up, then took it back down (see the earthcam from day to day).  :wtf:

Saw this nice report/update on WKYC last night. But amused that they flashed renderings of the Denver Hyatt Convention Hotel, the correct rendering, and then the initial rendering (which I believe used an office tower in Indianapolis for rough massing) from when idea of the hotel was first announced. The three don't even look alike. Idiots ...  :-o
