^ yeah, I believe it was mentioned either up thread or in a photo thread of the tour. Were you on the tour? I was one of the folks giving the tour.

As a Cuyahoga County resident, I am a part owner of the downtown Cleveland Hilton.  In the interest of checking up on my investment, and because I had a free night certificate that was about to expire

How does one get a hard hat tour?

Took this pic as I was out enjoying this beautiful 70 degree December weather!

Congrats! Your photo made it onto  Cooper Carry's Facebook page.

The bedroom interiors are awful! You would think the interior designers for Hilton would do better than that. :|

Is it supposed to be 80s themed?

It is missing one "hot" detail:

Flattering, but sad they couldn't give any credit to where they found it lol

Sorry to hear that!

Yes, I would respond very directly with them -- that they cannot use the graphic without giving you credit using the wording that you provide them with, such as "Photo by Steve Posh, courtesy of UrbanOhio.com" or whatever your real name is.

If they give you a BS line "it's too late" then tell them "You will be hearing from my attorney."

"In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck

^Agreed but as they are a for-profit entity and are using the image to promote their business, PoshSteve is well within his rights to request reasonable compensation, not just credit as the photographer.

I actually had written more along those lines after my suggested "You will be hearing from my attorney...." such as "...regarding compensation and the filing of a court order in the event you are unresponsive." But I didn't want to get TOO pushy. :)

Fact is, many publications don't pay for photos anymore as they can always find a decent photo in the public domain for free. So they offer a photo credit as their compensation and, if the photographer seeks more, the publisher moves on. Increasingly, publishers are run by cheap-a$$ conglomerates who make billions while firing their well-paid staff who have paid vacations, health care benefits and retirement plans, then replacing them with pay-per-submission freelancers. It's a lousy time to be in the writing/photography biz unless you're a technical/PR writer or multi-media specialist with a company whose mission has nothing to do with writing or photography!

I did comment on the picture on their facebook saying I'd like some sort of recognition for their usage of my photo. I'm not too upset about it being shown there. I checked out their website though to just make sure it wasn't also being displayed in their portfolio. I'd be a little more serious with them if it was being shown there too. Terrible how often this type of thing happens though. I'll keep everything you guys have said in mind though if they try to give me trouble. Thanks!

KJP[/member]  I guess that depends on the conglomerate one deals with.  Not all converted from staff to contractors.

Professionally speaking, many photographers, like recording artists, wanted more control of their product, so in many instances it was easier to convert and pay them as a contractor.

Cuyahoga County expects $25 million back from hotel project

CLEVELAND, Ohio - When the Hilton Cleveland Downtown hotel opens June 1, Cuyahoga County is expected to receive $25 million in unspent contingency funds, the project manager reports.

And guests who park in the county's Huntington Park Garage will be able to take an underground walkway to the hotel by spring 2017. County Council is expected to approve a $9.8 million contract next week to build the walkway below Lakeside Avenue.

Jeffrey Appelbaum, the Cleveland lawyer managing the project for the county, told council members this week that the hotel project is on time and on budget and no unexpected expenses are anticipated.

6 months left and they are already calculating leftover contingency? I guess all of the big headaches are out of the way.

At this point in construction everything you're dealing with is finish work which is almost never problematic on a project like this. And even when it is the costs aren't as large as, say, problems arising during foundation work or something along those lines.

Yes, you would hope new construction the problematic things are figured out. I would just be nervous about announcing it with a lot of work to go still.

^"Substantial completion" is expected by 4/1 according to the embedded ppt, so only about 3 months left of serious stuff.

$25 million???? That's enough to put 10 floors of condos on top ;)

All kidding aside, I did notice last night that the new tower lacks any red aircraft warning beacons.  All the other buildings around have them....

I wouldn't worry about it much since the building is still under construction.

That's also enough to make a significant contribution to the construction of the multi-modal station to further connect the convention center, med mart and hotel with regional and intercity transportation, as well as a staging area for conventioneers' charter buses.

That $25 million could leverage at least as much in federal rail, transit or intermodal transportation funding. I'd hate to see it go to a use that doesn't leverage additional dollars for our region.

I think you have a beginning of an advocacy letter there KJP...

I read that article as $10 mil of that was going to the underground walkway.

And the Huntington garage is going to cost $17 million to renovate.

I think you have a beginning of an advocacy letter there KJP...

I wrote one to Budish and county council members last year urging them to use any unspent construction reserve funds for the multi-modal hub. I received no reply.

i would prefer the extra dollars be used to complete  all the Malls landscaped as was planned by GGN.  The citizens of Cuyahoga County should be rewarded with a public space that was funded by our dollars.

They are. It's called Public Square and it's shaping up to be really nice.

not true. non of the money from the quarter cent sales tax hike was allocated towards Public Square. It was allotted towards The Convention Center/The Global Center/ Convention Center Hotel/ and a baseline for Malls B-C landscaping

Centerpiece of the new 32-story hotel's hospitality offerings will be The Burnham...

(from the above link)

Nice.

Also would have been nice if "The 9" took a spoon-fed great name and named a bar or restaurant "The Breuer"

This place is going to be very cool. Can't wait to see the design of the three story restaurant. It will have a large outdoor presence as well which should benefit the mall.

Don't know if any one else has noticed, but on the north side of the podium they have been doing the foundation work for the tunnel that will lead to the Huntington garage. This way that portion will be done when they resume construction again sometime in the fall.

So the steel framing cap is in it's finished form. Unlike the renderings it does not get a solid cover. The hotel representatives statement is as  follows " The steel cap does not get a cover, it's designed to showcase and compliment the metal detail throughout the exterior. "  It feels unfinished  to me compared to the other details.

Well that's interesting. Although I think I like it better without it covered. But what about the area over the porch? Wouldn't that still be covered. You almost couldn't call it a porch without it.covered.

Here are some shots from this past Friday:

All are good, but the 2nd and 4th are superb.

yeah those are great angles. i like the first one best with the juxtaposition of the rock hall.

its reminding me a bit of the modern, a new apt building just over the gwb in ft. lee, nj. the glass anyway.

Hold up, is this an alternate universe somewhere? Is the Skybar being closed in?...wtf...

^ Looks like it's just a temporary exterior wall that they're erecting to protect from the elements while they do interior work?

Well that makes sense, I hope.

That's all it is folks

I'm surprised with our climate they won't install some sort of sliding glass panels to make it still usable in the winter?

The skybar will be enclosed via a storefront system but there's an outdoor patio portion to it as well. So it'll still be able to be used during the winter, just not the patio portion.
