City Gospel Mission

I frequently get donation requests in the mail from City Gospel Mission.  I have donated to City Gospel Mission before but wanted to know people's opinion of this charity.  How would this charity rate in your mind to helping people of Cincinnati?

Seems like they have tons of adverts in the paper, especially around thanksgiving.  Makes me wonder how much of their budget goes toward actually serving meals.  They have attempted to get a permit years ago to demolish two buildings at 215 Magnolia Street, but were denied by the Historic Review, because they were not structurally unsound.

The buildings still sit there, (I think).

I've known men who stayed there, and they say it is better accomodations than the Drop Inn Center, but that is because it is a much smaller program, and only sleep a few dozen men at night.  (They can be more picky about who they let in?)  They serve lots of meals also.

Thanks for the info.  Are their any local charities that anyone would recommend?

Here is my favorite, these guys are awesome!  www.happeninc.com

Could you tell me more about First Step Home, Jimmy?  Do you have any personal experience with them?

Well this isn't exactly for the homeless, but a worthwhile charity that Holly and I are involved in is Miracles for Life.  This is the charity that we did the Mulberry Hill Tour for Life for.

Miracles for Life® (MFL) is a national, non-profit organization dedicated to raising awareness and funds to promote organ transplantation as one of the world’s greatest medical achievements and recognize the individuals touched by organ transplantation. We celebrate donors and recipients, as well as organ donation advocates, medical professionals and volunteers, in particular, as heroes. We strive to make these organ donor heroes a focus in the public eye, raising organ donor awareness, thus increasing the consent rate.

They have an upcoming event if you would like to go to it, we will be there the night of the 17th if you would like to join us and we will introduce you to the chairman and you can get to know the people vs just sending in a check to some address.

One of my aunts is a volunteer on their board, so I know that they do a lot with little money.  Their focus is women and alcohol / drug recovery.  They have done both rehab of historic buildings and new construction for housing and job training in the Walnut Hills area.

I personally have not done anything other than give money, so I do not know all the details.

Since the member base of Urban Ohio has grown, I would like to bump this thread and get opinions for Cincinnati charities and City Gospel Mission.
