Posted July 16, 201311 yr Hello All! I just moved to Toledo and am looking for housing. The areas I am most drawn to are the Warehouse District, the Historic District of the Old West End, and Old Orchard. Couple questions: 1) How safe do you feel in each of these areas? 2) I have found a non-active website for the St. Clair Village Apartments in the Warehouse District, however I can't seem to find any current websites or phone numbers (the three numbers I found appear to be a fax number, a number to an elderly complex, and a woman's cell phone). Does anyone know if these apartments still exist and if so, how I can contact them to check them out? 3) Are there any other areas of Toledo that have interesting architecture with a relatively safe feel? I'm hoping to find an area where I can walk my dog around at night, but am quickly learning that that might be a lot to ask for in any area of Toledo... Thanks!
July 17, 201311 yr ^Toledo has an area in its downtown called the Warehouse District (as of course does Cleveland).
July 17, 201311 yr St. Clair Village is still very active; I toured it last year and it was well-maintained. I would suggest talking to one of the shop owners if you want contact information for the building management. Also in the Warehouse District are the recently-completed Standart Lofts (http://standartlofts.com/).
July 17, 201311 yr I don't have much experience walking around at night in the Old West End or Warehouse District (I've always felt safe in both), but you can certainly feel safe walking your dog at anytime in Old Orchard.
July 21, 201311 yr Friends of ours live in the OWE and feel pretty safe. It's like any other urban neighborhood -- can't be paranoid but can't be stupid.
July 22, 201311 yr If I had to move to Toledo today, I would say Old Orchard is the spot I would move the family. It's safe, has a great mix of older brick homes, tudors and all that fun stuff that the old upper middle class neighborhoods have...as far as housing. The retail around it is not anything special, rather suburban/exurban. As far as retail around the OWE, there's virtually nothing. I would say Old Orchard is the most intact older, walkable neighborhoods in Toledo. When I say walkable, not walkable in the sense of walking to restaurants, bars, however walkable for just taking a walk. Cheltenham is the main residential street running through the neighborhood.
July 23, 201311 yr If you live on the northwestern side of Old Orchard, it isn't far to the Secor/Central business district. It is certainly bikeable - rode through there often from UT.
