Its the area where they were pouring fresh concrete, probably and this is just assumption, the temporary structure/bracing wasn't installed properly, prior to the pour. The concrete pumper was swinging off the side of the building, happen to turn the corner when everything happened. One guy has been taken to the hospital so far.
November 25, 20195 yr There is likely to be a shutdown of all construction activity for some period of time while they investigate what went wrong. Worst case scenario, they find one of the subcontractors to be at fault for not following safety procedures and fire them, adding a much longer delay to the project.
November 25, 20195 yr Dang, did they find the missing person? I hadn't seen anything on that. That's really scary. Obviously, something went horribly wrong with the concrete forms.

November 25, 20195 yr Confirmed 3 injured 1 dead. https://www.wlwt.com/article/1-dead-3-injured-in-partial-building-collapse-downtown-cincinnati/29959216 Tragic. Not sure what will happen to this project now.

This project won’t be delayed that much. They will do a investigation over the next couple weeks and analyze the structure itself to make sure the building is stable and then will start back up. The collapsed portion isn’t that large and the damage doesn’t look to have effected other floors that much. What’s key here is this was not a break down of a “settled” part of the building, it was a section of brand new concrete being poured that gave way.

The “delay” will mostly depend on how long it takes them to carefully remove the debris and rebuild that section and anything else that was damaged after they get the all clear to resume work
November 26, 20195 yr This is the work I do, so I'll be paying close attention to what happened here. I don't know anything about this project in particular, but the equipment they were using was all wood and some really old scaffold supports under the portion that collapsed. It seems like a repeatable floor, so the crew either didn't support this section as they should have, the designs were inadequate for the loads, or the equipment wasn't good enough and failed. I wouldn't be surprised if this was a critical failure of some of the formwork since the scaffolding looked ancient. Since the floor looked identical to the ones below it, I doubt it was a design failure since it didn't fail in any other bay on any other floor.
November 26, 20195 yr Grinding and scraping concrete off the 6th floor slab wouldn't be horribly time consuming if there wasn't the gigantic caveat that there is a human underneath it. They can't exactly go to town cleaning up the mess until they have recovered the missing person. I'm curious how much of the partially collapsed 7th floor will need to be demolished, I'm not super familiar with the post-tensioned process to know if they will have to remove that entire length or if they can tie-in reinforcing mid span.
November 26, 20195 yr Right, the fact that the search operation is still underway makes it seem very likely that there is still at least one person buried under the collapse. Really tragic.
December 3, 20195 yr Work resumes on downtown building after partial collapse By Erin Caproni – Digital Producer, Cincinnati Business Courier Crews will resume work at the Fourth & Race development on Tuesday after a portion of the building collapsed during a concrete pour last week, killing one worker and injuring four others. Following the partial collapse on Nov. 25, general contractor Turner Construction partnered with structural engineering consulting firm Thornton Tomasetti to evaluate the site for stability. The review found that the first five levels of the building are secure along with the portions of levels six and seven that weren’t involved in the collapse. MORE
December 4, 20195 yr My understanding is that this project uses rather thick slabs (12" or so), and when they're pouring they have someone walking around the wet slab with a story pole measuring the depth of the concrete to ensure it's level and at the right depth. There's also people underneath to make sure the forms aren't sagging, which wouldn't necessarily show above as a deep spot, since even pumped concrete doesn't self-level. Considering the thickness of the slabs, it could be as simple as a minor flaw in the form work, like a joint not being fully secured, or a temporary column being knocked out of alignment after the pre-pouring inspection. I don't think there's been any determination so far.
January 3, 20205 yr New project update from 3CDC: Quote A warm spell between Christmas and New Year's Day helped crews make considerable progress at the 4th and Race project site last month. The first concrete pour for Level 8 was completed in late December. On Race Street, exterior masonry work has been completed on Level 1 through Level 6. A weather barrier was installed over top in preparation for the exterior insulation finishing system. On the ground level, commercial window frames have been installed on Race Street and around the corner of Fourth Street. Read on for this week’s full construction update and be sure to check out the construction photos, which are updated weekly.
March 13, 20205 yr Today's update from 3CDC: Quote Exterior Insulation and Finish Systems application is underway on the Race Street façade Windows are being installed up to level 5 Installation of the 4th Street elevator platform is in progress Masons are building headers on the level 5. This is the final masonry work on the garage façade Electricians are installing light fixtures in the Race Street stairwell The final concrete pour for level 9 will take place in the coming days EIFS will be applied to the Elm Street façade next week Work will begin on the western half of the 4th Street sidewalk next week Excited that the sidewalks around this project will reopen soon!
April 28, 20205 yr Pictures of the construction progress from the Hyatt today (4/28). It really is a huge building.

May 27, 20205 yr I walked by this one today and you can sort of tell in the photo above, but the glass and facade are much darker than I was anticipating and as they add more it's starting to feel really dark and foreboding. I'm waiting to see what they do with the material that's rendered as white but considering how large the mass of this building is from 4th Street I'm worried it's going to make that whole block feel a little claustrophobic.

In the renderings they had some type of plants that somewhat covered the garage levels. They haven't been added though and I doubt they will be at this point.

Unfortunately, as a landscape architect, I am all too aware of architects just plopping plants on any and all parts of buildings, just imagining anything can grow anywhere... It is always a cop out for spending money on some aesthetic architectural feature, and almost zero guarantee that any planting will be seriously attempted (or even adequately designed for).

June 26, 20204 yr Another project that I wish was just 5 floors higher. It would make more of an impact on the skyline if it were just a little higher, but obviously I'm not the one paying for it.
June 26, 20204 yr I would be great it if were taller, but I think it does have a nice rhythm to it (from the angle above) with the higher sections at each end.
August 18, 20204 yr I took these a couple weeks ago (or maybe last week? Quarantine time is crazy. I've lost all track). I forgot to post them then.
August 31, 20204 yr From the August 2020 update: Quote 4TH & RACE Permanent power has been turned on and curbs have been poured throughout as the construction crew finishes the parking garage for 4th & Race. Interior framing and mechanical, electrical and plumbing work will continue on residential levels 8-10. The pool area has been waterproofed and the second of three concrete pours has been poured for Level 15, which will be the roof of the building. For additional details, subscribe to regular project updates, and refer to the archive for past updates.
October 23, 20204 yr Sorry my cell phone camera sucks, but this one has a pretty dominating street presence. I like the verticality at the corners, but the eifs all over it makes it look a little cheap/flat.
