September 1, 20204 yr The Columbus Police report was released on the shooting of 22-year-old, fifth-year senior defensive lineman Haskell Garrett that occurred early Sunday morning near OSU at an off-campus location: https://theathletic.com/2034514/2020/08/31/police-report-osus-garrett-shot-while-trying-to-break-up-a-fight/ https://www.buckeyextra.com/sports/20200831/ohio-statersquos-haskell-garrett-told-police-he-was-shot-while-trying-to-break-up-fight https://www.elevenwarriors.com/ohio-state-football/2020/08/116185/ohio-state-defensive-tackle-haskell-garrett-told-columbus-police-he-was-attempting-to-break-up-a-fight-when-shot The report of the incident, first reported by The Athletic and then reported by the Dispatch(BuckeyeXtra) and Eleven Warriors, says Garrett stated that he was walking in the direction of Chittenden and Grant Avenue when he observed a male and a female “arguing and being aggressive.” Garrett stated that after telling the male to stop arguing with the female, the male turned toward Garrett, pulled out a handgun and fired, hitting Garrett in the face. Garrett told police that he did not know either the man or woman. Garrett then ran to his friend's apartment on East 11th Avenue, where police found him after responding to the scene of the shooting at 12:28 a.m. Sunday and finding a shell casing and a trail of blood that led to the apartment. In addition to Garrett, police interviewed two additional people at the apartment, including Ohio State linebacker Pete Werner. Garrett was taken to the OSU Wexner Medical Center hospital in stable condition after suffering what Columbus police described as a “through and through” gunshot wound on the cheeks of his face, according to the report. He was released from the medical center on Monday. Columbus Police's investigation into the shooting is ongoing and a suspect has not yet been identified.

September 21, 20204 yr And a homicide over the past weekend that was not within the Columbus city limits, but still notable: Mother, daughter run for cover from fatal shooting outside gun show at former Westland Mall A woman and her 9-year-old daughter lived through terrifying moments Sunday afternoon when a shooting erupted in front of them in the parking lot at the former Westland Mall. When the gunfire stopped, a man was down; he was soon pronounced dead around 4 p.m. by responding Franklin Township medics. The victim was identified by the Franklin County sheriff’s office on Monday as 21-year-old Sage Martin of the South Side. Martin was shot and wounded in another mall parking lot two months ago. On July 18, Martin, then 20, was shot multiple times in his lower body at Eastland Mall. Sheriff’s investigators believe at least two suspects were involved, but they have limited information as to the pair’s identities. The crime “does not appear to be random,” the sheriff’s office said in a release. At the time of Sunday’s shooting, a two-day gun show operated by C & E Gun Shows of Pembroke, Virginia, was wrapping up inside the west side of the former mall. One person, identified as Ohio State student Chase Meola, 23 - a fifth-year marketing major from New Jersey - was found in the parking area of the house when police arrived, and pronounced dead at the scene. Kintie Mitchell Jr., 18, of Columbus, was arrested and charged with murder in relation to the shooting. Reports indicate the shooting was the result of an altercation after people were asked to leave a party in the area. This was the 127th homicide in Columbus for 2020. Ohio State suspended its Phi Kappa Psi chapter in 2018, through August 2022, for hazing. The building is currently being used as a boarding house.

November 4, 20204 yr After 24 years in office, Franklin County Prosecutor Ron O'Brien loses to Democrat Gary Tyack Retired Appeals Court Judge Gary Tyack, still recovering from a stroke he suffered in September, pulled off an upset victory Tuesday night over incumbent Franklin County Prosecutor Ron O'Brien. Democrat Tyack received 53% of the vote to 47% for O'Brien, the longest-serving prosecutor in county history at 24 years. I'm surprised that O'Brien lost - but maybe I shouldn't have been. In the article O'Brien said his loss was not a surprise, citing three factors that worked in his opponent's favor: "First, the demographics of the county have changed substantially in the time I've been in office," he said. "Second, the Democratic party here is very effective in getting people to vote its slate card, from top to bottom. And third, (President Trump) is a very unpopular candidate in Franklin County." In 2016, the changing demographics of the county were evident, when O'Brien survived a challenge from then-Columbus City Council President Zach Klein, 49 to 45%, in part because a Green Party candidate attracted 6% of the vote. Tyack, 74, served more than 24 years as a judge on the 10th District Court of Appeals, which hears appeals from cases in Franklin County courts. He retired from the bench at the end of his last term in early 2019 because of an Ohio law that prevents judges from beginning a term after age 70. Released from a rehabilitation center last month, Tyack said he continues working to regain full use of his right arm and leg, but that his mind wasn't affected. O'Brien prided himself on being a working prosecutor, often teaming up with assistant prosecutors to try death-penalty and other high-profile cases. He was part of the team preparing to try the case against Dr. William Husel, accused of murdering 25 hospital patients through painkiller overdoses. With his election loss, O'Brien will leave office before Husel's May 10 trial date.

November 13, 20204 yr Not really sure what to make of this: New Columbus police policy will end most minor theft arrests, including 'porch pirates' The change in Columbus Division of Police policy, which went into effect Friday, says officers are not to arrest or issue a summons for most nonviolent misdemeanor offenses, including theft. Division directives had previously said officers should not do this, but allowed officer discretion. The directive's language has now been changed to officers shall not, barring them from taking action in the majority of instances. Officers must now file a report with the City Attorney's office, which will decide whether charges are warranted. The directive does still allow for officers to detain a misdemeanor offense suspect to check for any outstanding warrants. City Attorney Zach Klein's office issued a statement after the Fraternal Order of Police raised concerns about the change in directive removing officer discretion, citing the lack of resolve for victims of theft. December 23, 20204 yr Unarmed Black man fatally shot by Columbus police officer responding to noise complaint A Columbus police officer shot and killed an unarmed Black man while responding to a call early Tuesday. ... Police spokesman Sgt. James Fuqua said officers were dispatched at 1:37 a.m. Tuesday on a non-emergency call to the 1000 block of Oberlin Drive on the city's Northwest Side for a disturbance involving an SUV running on and off for an extended time. Fuqua said the complaint came from a neighbor. At a press conference Tuesday afternoon, Mayor Ginther and city Department of Public Safety officials revealed more details about the shooting: When officers arrived on the scene, they found a home's garage door open and a man inside. The man, who was visiting someone at the home, walked toward officers with a cellphone in his left hand and his right hand not visible, according to a review by city officials of one of the responding officer’s body-worn camera footage. One officer fired his weapon, striking the 47-year-old Black man, who later died at OhioHealth Riverside Methodist Hospital. The officers involved in the incident did not turn on their body cameras until immediately after the shooting, but it was recorded because the camera captures 60 seconds of footage before it is turned on. The state Bureau of Criminal Investigation is leading the case, as is now city policy for shootings involving Columbus police officers. This shooting happened less than three weeks after a Franklin County sheriff's deputy shot Casey Goodson Jr., a 23-year-old Black man, in the Northland area during a Federal drug sweep. The investigation into that shooting is being led by the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Ohio. "Columbus residents have lost faith in him and in division's ability to change on its own. Chief Quinlan understood. He agreed to step back, so the city can move forward. I appreciate Chief Quinlan’s service to the community and the changes he was able to implement in his time as chief." Quinlan was demoted back to a deputy chief, while another deputy chief Mike Woods will serve as interim chief while the city begins a national search for a permanent replacement. The decision comes just over a month after Columbus police officer Adam Coy fatally shot a 47-year-old unarmed black man, Andre Hill, at the entrance to the garage of a home where he was an invited guest and following a summer of racial injustice protests where police use of force came under question.
February 4, 20214 yr Former Columbus Police Officer Adam Coy was indicted by a Franklin County grand jury on a murder charge and arrested Wednesday for the shooting of 47-year-old Andre Hill. Hill, an unarmed black man, was fatally shot by Coy after Coy and another officer responded to a call from a neighbor on December 22, 2020. Coy also faces an additional three counts from the grand jury, felonious assault and two counts of dereliction of duty — one for failing to turn on his body camera when he responded to the scene, and another for failing to inform his fellow officer that he felt Hill presented a danger. Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost, whose office will prosecute Coy, released a statement on Wednesday detailing the charges against Coy. Yost also tweeted in reference to the Coy prosecution that “The rule of law comes down to this: the same rules for everybody.” Columbus Mayor Andrew Ginther posted support for the indictment, saying that while the indictment “does not lessen the pain” of Hill’s death, “it is a step toward justice.” https://www.thisweeknews.com/story/news/2021/02/03/ohio-attorney-general-adam-coy-indicted-death-andre-hill/4381820001/ https://lawandcrime.com/high-profile/former-ohio-police-officer-indicted-for-murder-in-dec-2020-shooting-of-unarmed-andre-hill/

COL homicides down March-May initial lockdown then exploded and remains on-going. Even cities that didn’t see a spring 2020 homicide slow down have seen an explosion of homicides since the summer. Pandemic is taking the blame in many big cities (Philly 50 January homicides-pandemic, Chicago 51 January murders-pandemic). The pandemic is not to blame though. What is causing the COL violence? Dereliction of Duty is related to? Failure to turn body cam on? I also don’t get politicians (mayors, governors, presidents etc) making opinions, firing cops, and being happy a cop is indicted. This is a national thing though and not just Columbus. Prejudicial comments and behavior before any fact finding. Out of context video clips. Lots of political grandstanding for “woke” cred. This $3 million bond is for show. the key narrative here is white cop shoots/kills black male. At least Columbus released this cop’s body cam video but that’s not always the case nationwide; Minneapolis, for example, never released cops’ body cam videos from the George Floyd matter. Not sure this will end in a murder conviction though based. Tragic situation regardless.

February 21, 20214 yr So what was the deal? He shot him for no reason because he's racist or the guy was resisting arrest, acting crazy and threatening, running away from the police and other things the media tends to not report on? If there's so many racist white cops shooting unarmed black men for no reason, the solution pretty simple to me. Just hire an all-black police force to patrol predominantly black neighborhoods. Then the debate is over and I don't have to hear about it all the time. A lot of people aren't going to like me saying this but I'm guessing a similar number of black men would still get shot or killed by officers. Even $1M bail seems excessive. If you're going to have a million dollar bond, you might as well set it at 500 billion for most people. Police (even the white ones with all their white privilege and whatnot) don't make that much money and don't have the resources to handle a bond lowered to even $1M. To your point about Woke and politics, that DA in Los Angeles is trying to institute a no bond policy for ALL criminals, meaning dangerous threats to society can run the streets until their court date, if he hasn't already. I wonder how that'll work out for them in woke Cali. On 2/4/2021 at 5:21 PM, CLENYC said: What is causing the COL violence? On track for 240-250 homicides in 2021? Wow. Common Pleas Judge Michael J. Holbrook told prosecution and defense attorneys at a status conference Wednesday that he can't image finding time to hold what is expected to be a six- to eight-week trial until the "middle of next year (2022)." Husel, 45, was indicted in June of 2019, but his trial has faced repeated delays because of COVID-19 safety protocols, which has dramatically limited the ability of the courts to conduct jury trials - plus a change in leadership at the Franklin County Prosecutor's Office.

April 13, 20214 yr One dead in officer-involved shooting at St. Ann’s Hospital in Westerville WESTERVILLE, Ohio (WCMH) — One person is dead Monday after a shooting involving multiple police and security officers in the emergency department of St. Ann’s Hospital. According to Westerville and Columbus police officials, police responded to a call of a man passed out in his vehicle. They requested medics, and the man was taken to St. Ann’s emergency room, with the officers accompanying him. Officers learned that the man had domestic violence warrants out in his name, as well as a weapons under disability warrant in Franklin County. It is unknown at what point or how the man became armed, but the shooting involved multiple rounds, with Columbus police, Westerville police, and St. Ann’s security present. Police said it was personnel from St. Ann’s and Columbus police who fired their weapons. None of the six officers involved was injured, but the suspect was. Emergency room staff did attempt to resuscitate the shooting victim, but were unsuccessful, Westerville City Police Department Chief Charles Chandler said. We are on track for a record bad year-significantly worse than last years dismal record. We are not the only city experiencing this and I don't know why it is happening really and I have no idea of how to stop it.
April 21, 20214 yr Two Dispatch articles about yesterday's officer-involved shooting on the far southeast side: Ma'Khia Bryant: What we know about the Columbus police shooting of the 16-year-old girl Ma’Khia Bryant: Columbus police release body camera footage in shooting of 16-year-old "In an unprecedented move, Columbus police showed body camera footage of the shooting of a 16-year-old girl by a Columbus police officer just hours after the incident on the Southeast Side." "The shooting, which happened about 20 minutes before a guilty verdict was announced in the trial of Derek Chauvin, a former Minneapolis police officer who killed George Floyd, prompted hundreds to protest at the shooting site and Downtown." "The video shows an officer approaching a driveway with a group of young people standing there. In the video, it appears that the 16-year-old, identified now as Ma’Khia Bryant, who was moments later shot by police, pushes or swings at a person, who falls to the ground." "Bryant then appears to swing a knife at a girl who is on the hood of a car, and the officer fires his weapon what sounds like four times, striking Bryant, who died a short time later."

Quote Ohio's new 'stand your ground' law is in effect SYG went into effect this month. I know many people see the officer's actions as justified based on the video evidence so far. But if Bryant had a reasonable and honest fear of being in immediate danger of death or bodily harm, she was justified in holding her knife. We will likely never know the details of the encounter that led up to that point. Just...very curious to me that none of the big SYG proponents have come out in support of Bryant. A very complicated and tragic situation, regardless of who was "in the right" with regards to the law. Very Stable Genius

A very complicated and tragic situation, regardless of who was "in the right" with regards to the law. I kind of was too until the neighbors audio/video came out. But also stand your ground I don't believe means actively attacking. I admittedly haven't read the law yet but only 1 of the 2 appear to be actively attacking Bryant(the one who was shoved to the ground), she(Bryant) then appeared to attack the female in pink. Overall a tragic situation, could have also been much worse. *As a side note, it's amazing to me that a taser has not been developed that can penetrate basic clothing. It would more than likely leave one hell of a scar but would be much better than the alternative. My guess is the projectile would have to be shot at such force that it could too potentially kill someone. If anyone bow hunts or is a fan of archery you will know what I'm talking about. **SORRY FOR THE RANT**
