Posted August 13, 201311 yr Ohio City, and then a trip down Lorain Ave within Cleveland proper. Lorain Ave...unpretentious, rough around the edges to be sure... in some areas that is an understatement. This is easily the most diverse 6 miles in the state of Ohio. ANd if that's not enough, a significant amount of Old school Cleveland commercial architecture remains, despite the street being divided for the construction of I-90 and the placement of suburban-style strip malls like Westown.
August 13, 201311 yr Great commercial street tour! "You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers
August 13, 201311 yr Super! I don't remember a similar Lorain-centric photo thread. Only gripe, you skipped over Mi Pueblo. p.s. As a general rule, the newer the building, the worse the architecture/street presence.
August 13, 201311 yr whats not to love? except you want to dig up the westown developer and kick him in the nutz.
August 13, 201311 yr Thanks! I've always loved Lorain's (mostly) intact street wall. Unfortunately, its redevelopment has taken a back seat to Detroit Avenue (with the exception of Kamm's,) but I'm hoping that changes soon, especially in western Ohio City, the stretch between W. Boulevard and 90, and the W. 65th, 117th, and 130th areas.
August 13, 201311 yr Oh forgot to mention that Babes aka "Hobo Joes" has some pretty sweet specials. I'm remembering two Polish boys for 7.00 on Tuesdays. Decadent!
August 13, 201311 yr kleins radiator is begging to be a hipster bar. that front is a gold mine, may it never change.
August 13, 201311 yr ^I thought the same thing...and what a great name for a bar! Thanks! I know, Detroit seems to overshadow Lorain...but Detroit runs near the lakefront neighborhoods, so it makes sense. The I90 break on Lorain also does a ton of damage on making it a true contiguous great urban street, which sucks since it is mostly intact otherwise. Is the Lorain antiques store the one that used to be "Suite Lorain"?? Also, I was looking if you had a pic of "antiques in the bank" at Fulton and Lorain...googled it and see that its actually a 5/3 Bank now!
August 13, 201311 yr Great set of photos! That's quite the walk from Ohio city to kamms corners. Lorain is by far my favorite street in this city. The amount of renovations and planned renovations occurring lately is impressive. Hansa house and the new brewery incubator as well as the redevelopment of the eastern edge of DS/western edge of OC are really a game changer. In a few years, this should be Cleveland's premier urban corridor.
August 13, 201311 yr Very comprehensive tour - thanks for posting! clevelandskyscrapers.com Cleveland Skyscrapers on Instagram
August 13, 201311 yr Clueless -- fantastic job! I write about this street nearly every week and travel to/through it often as a resident and customer of many of its businesses. Thanks so much for visually sharing this great street with UrbanOhio. "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
August 13, 201311 yr Love giving lesser known areas their due. Standing O! to all who patronize the businesses. Yes the Kleins Radiator storefront is something, those are hard to come by and this one is in ostensibly good condition. Its my favorite of those that Ive pictured here, except for the George Washington school at the end, you know...the one with the Dunkin Donuts drive-thru in its fron t yard, lol. Well I suppose it could've been demoed... glad it wasnt
August 14, 201311 yr Great set of photos! That's quite the walk from Ohio city to kamms corners. Lorain is by far my favorite street in this city. Hansa house and the new brewery incubator as well as the redevelopment of the eastern edge of DS/western edge of OC are really a game changer. In a few years, this should be Cleveland's premier urban corridor. Great photos, great street, but I'm not so sure of that. As of right now Lorain looks absolutely bombed out. It has a LONG way to go and a Hanseatic beer garden that serves up cold Slovenian brews isn't going to fix it all overnight. Not that I wouldn't love a Lasko right now, or whichever beer is on their sign.
August 14, 201311 yr This is really a spectacular set, Clueless. Up to city hall to tighten that overlay to help protect it.
August 15, 201311 yr I love the hot dog place...not saying I would actually eat there! Also this appears to be a sizable Lebanese and/or other Arab area. Any idea on the population? http://www.mainstreetpainesville.org/
August 15, 201311 yr Form these pictures one wouldn't think that immigration was stagnant in Cleve. Nice post!
August 16, 201311 yr Dont know any population numbers but the area on Lorain from about W 115th to W 130th is sometimes referred to as Little Arabia beccause of shopping and residents. Iirc, Palestinians are th most represented in CLeveland. It is definitely the regional shopping and (authentic) dining destination for Middle Eastern/Arabic specialties (like Asiatown and, to some extent, Little Italy are to their respective communities). I believe businesses took a hit post-9/11...if that was the case then things have rebounded nicely
August 16, 201311 yr Form these pictures one wouldn't think that immigration was stagnant in Cleve. Nice post! Seriously. My favorite picture might be the commercial building with Saigan Trading, Pepe's Barbershop, and Aqsa Travel.
