Posted August 22, 201311 yr What is going on with this site? It is becoming more and more common for members to post insulting, attacking posts to/about other members. When did this become an ok thing to do? We have gone from civil adult conversations about projects, issues, and discussions about Ohio cities to most of the posts being back and forth insults because people have different opinions. It has become uncivil and new members are pushed away or stop posting. Same goes for long time members. It began with just a few members but it has gone unchecked and more and more people feel the need to include insults in their posts. Additionally moderators on several occasions have participated in this behavior or have even started it. Another issue I have is people purposefully posting links to crazy opinion pieces and acting as if they are legitimate news in order to create conflict and cause pointless uncivil debate. This is especially true in the political/current events sections which gets carried into the rest of the forum as people like to insult others on past political statements in topics completely unrelated. Unfortunately moderators participate in this behavior as well and often times post it themselves. It has gotten to the point where you can’t even enter a development topic without seeing insults or rude remarks. Fortunately most members are great and do not participate in this behavior, act kindly to new members, as well as old, and politely share their opinions without resulting in pathetic behavior. Unfortunately a few can ruin it for everyone, and if this continues to go unchecked, the numbers will grow and this forum will suffer from it.
August 22, 201311 yr Hey, screw you buddy! :x Sorry, reflex. You are seeing the natural evolution for any internet forum. You can't really avoid it if you hope for any kind growth. The alternative is to clamp down on sense offenders, but that's only going to kill the forum momentum. There will always be some noise to the signal. Have to tune it out or go out of your way to post more signal. I don't really have insider contacts or anything to get breaking news. The best I can do is post the occasional construction photo.
August 22, 201311 yr Stay out of the politics section. Most of what you're talking about is there. Though maybe the Cleveland sections are getting bad; I don't read them much.
August 22, 201311 yr Hey, screw you buddy! :x ...The alternative is to clamp down on sense offenders, ... Doesn't the sheriff have some thing where they have to report where they love every six months for life? ;)

I'll admit I'm not on the Cincinnati or Columbus sections much so I'm not sure how things are over there, but the Cleveland sections are bad. Most of the biggest offenders are from the Cleveland area so that probably explains why.
August 22, 201311 yr I have been registered for more than 7 years and really can't say things are uncivil at all now compare to the past. In fact, thinking about it, I can recall much worse in the past and the mods having to take action quite regularly. If anything the board has become less interesting and less informative over the years.
August 22, 201311 yr I agree Htsguy about the lack of change in civility...... with the exception of the brief life of the AFC North thread :)
August 22, 201311 yr I think it has become less informative/interesting because people have stopped posting as often. Way less picture threads it seems. Probably because no one hardly comments on them so people stopped wasting their time. That's where a "like" button could be useful. Most posting traffic is in the polical/current events section as city discussions constantly get axed because people can't remain civil. So now we have to wait for projects to happen to have something to talk about. Why are city discussions well moderated/overly moderated(suspend users, don't lock/delete thread), while the project section, current events section, and transportation section are free for alls?
August 22, 201311 yr I thought this was going to be a "Jeopardy" column about battle posts not related to the civil war. :(
August 22, 201311 yr CO - some may have been lost in the Great UO Crash of 2013, but MayDay has addressed these very same concerns at length multiple times before. I seem to recall at least once it being done in response to your request
August 22, 201311 yr I have to agree that unpopular posts tend to get shouted down on occasion (not all the time, but enough that I've noticed), and there is a tension between certain posters (sexual or otherwise) that has carried over between threads. That said, there is the 'report to moderator' button on each post, which will at least alert the Mods to the problem. As far as the discrepancy in styles between boards, I have to think that has as much to do with the personality of the particular Mod monitoring the board as anything else.
August 22, 201311 yr I'm just gonna move this here as it was OFF-TOPIC in the thread it was initially posted :whip: FWIW, Hts121, I think you often come off as being unnecessarily combative. You act as if you are right, everyone else is wrong, and there's no point in discussing the matter. I've seen you do this to 327 in just about every topic he posts in, many of the current event threads...really anywhere you post. It's very unbecoming.
August 23, 201311 yr edale, don't you know zere eez notheeng to discuss! Hts hass sprechen! http://www.mainstreetpainesville.org/

I was actually looking forward to that (I hope I'm not confusing you with someone else--talk about adding insult to injury--lol) I stopped doing photothreads a year ago after my one for the Bastille Day celebration in NY. I believe I got exactly one comment--from ColDayMan--and I think he was just being nice. I happened to be very proud of those pictures--not that I'm fishing either! (frankly, in my case, I think its just snobbery against the point-n-shoot crowd ) http://www.mainstreetpainesville.org/
August 23, 201311 yr I think a "like" system would work well. The problem I have is that I have to run a script to convert my posts on my four web sites to be compatible with BBcode here, which is fine. But it makes it more time consuming to do so, and the number of views have sharply decreased from their peak about two years ago. I still get plenty of views and comments on other sites, so I'm not sure if it's just an UO thing or burnout. I'd like to do more brief posts. You know, two images or so, some text and then a link. That way, the original content stays where it needs to be without having to jump to a forum. If someone likes it, then the "like" button can be pressed and there can be some gratification.

It isn't that I'm "being nice" (believe me, I'm not that nice!), it's just respect. Well I finally got my compliments! haha. I suppose I implied that I'm not posting photos anymore based on not getting many comments, that's not entirely true. Truthfully, probably what holds me back is the time and process of posting photos - with my mac I have to export the images so that I can capture my edits in Aperture, then upload to a website, then put them on here. Not that I'm telling any of you anything you don't know, but it can be time consuming. As far as NYC pics, I've posted some of them piecemeal on various threads I think, so I'm not sure if I'll do one dedicated thread.
August 23, 201311 yr There's two subtopics here, lack of positive feedback, and lack of civility, but both seem to come back to a desire for more personal validation on the site....which is natural. You look for a little positive reinforcement when you put something out there on the internet. Personally, I blame ColDayMan for the whole problem. All of these issues seemed to start rearing their ugly heads right around the time of the disappearance of his 'Love' alter ego. That b!tch brought the harmony.

On that note - I have a new website - www.kevinsmithphoto.com (scroll down) Yes smith I think you pictures are some of the best on this site, in fact , some of the best Ive ever seen. THis one below is one of my favorites of all time. As I said when you posted it back in June 2011...it is "top-notch." Quite simply award-winning and there are many more. How you havent gotten more coments, I dont know. No secret that Ive posted many threads and a number of construction updates -- all Cleveland-centric -- and am pleased when fellow UOers appreciate it by commenting. Although it is a lot of work, and it can get kind of exhausting, and Im getting tired...and so on and so on, I'd still do it even without much feedback because in the end Im doing it for the CLE and not for anything personal. Probably sounds extremely corny, but it's true. I guess you gotta just assume that its appreciated even if not expressly commented on
August 23, 201311 yr All these compliments are makings uncomfortable! Ha. Kidding and I didn't mean to turn this into me - I'm just as guilty about not commenting on the great work the rest of you guys do.
August 24, 201311 yr I have to admit that I like seeing a good lawyer fight on here. It's like, "Yeah! I'm watching lawyers battle it out for free!"

Try moderating a Browns board, especially the week of a Stoolers game or during a quarterback controversy. A lot of the flare-ups I’ve seen come from new people, what I call “Gee, Aren’t I Great” (GAIG) posters. They stumble across this site when one of their pet issues heats up, apparently expecting everyone to reaffirm their view of how wonderful they are. Some aren’t ready for the fact that dissenting viewpoints (let alone sympathetic-but-critical questions or comments) are very much a part of the culture here. Some of them wise up and see the value of the kind of debate that goes on here, some wander off looking for friendlier confines. We get a few personal beefs, but there's very little of the piling on those create elsewhere.
August 26, 201311 yr We get a few personal beefs, but there's very little of the piling on those create elsewhere.[/color] ...as long as you think even the slightest setback will be the downfall of civilization, you will get along just fine here
August 26, 201311 yr The reason I like this forum is because of the quality content and the civility. I think the boards I read are fairly well moderated (I just became a mod so I'm not patting myself on the back, here). I've tried joining a couple of other non-Ohio related forums before, and the complete lack of moderation, the attacks, and the negativity quickly pushed me away. As E Rocc said, by net standards, this is very civil. Also, I love the photos people post. I wish I could travel as much as some of you do. Photo threads are my favorite ones to read.
August 26, 201311 yr Mainly the Cleveland transportation threads are what get bad. Current Event section gets bad but Im not in that section that often. But thinking back on things, the transportation section is where most of the problems occur.
August 26, 201311 yr ^I've made the mistake of going into the politics sections before. I try to avoid commenting on them now because they don't really lead anywhere. I don't read the Cleveland Transportation thread, so I don't really know how bad that is.
August 26, 201311 yr I don't know if I'd really say there are too many problems. Disagreements, sure. Problems, not so much.
August 26, 201311 yr I think it all depends on the sensitivities of a given member. I've tried to refrain as best I can on responding to certain members since I was individually called out for essentially being insensitive a month or two ago. I know certain members won't get offended no matter what you say (E Rocc, to his credit). I know some members will fake being offended (cough, cough EVD) at the slightest ribbing. And there are some that you'll offend no matter what you say if your take disagrees with or somehow discredits their own (no names please). I don't venture into the Transportation section all that much..... but I keep up on the current events section routinely and despite the constant insults from those people that can't (for whatever unkown reason) seem to refrain from opening the section, I find the discussion some of the more civil and diverse you will find on an internet forum given the topics of discussion and compared to other sites.
August 26, 201311 yr then there are those people who get "offended" when anyone even remotely suggests that there's a legitimate point of view that veers (be it ever so slightly) from their rigid doctrine of political correctness and lash out in fake outrage (it's scary that it could be actually be real) at the "offending" party as if they were expressing a thought straight from the pages of Mein Kampf. Not naming names...cough cough http://www.mainstreetpainesville.org/
August 26, 201311 yr Well, FWIW, EVD.... I've never been even the slightest bit offended by anything you have ever posted. Disagreed, for sure. But never offended at all. If you take my fact-checking your posts as being offended, I don't know what to say. And I don't think I have ever used the term 'political correctness' except in response to you constantly injerjecting it into the conversation. You can feel free to prove me wrong...... (spoiler alert: this will be one of those times when I ask for proof of my allegedly prior comments and you fail to provide any). BTW, you also are notorious for trying to tie in the Nazis (see #13 and #34). You know what they say about the first to bring up Hitler....

November 20, 201311 yr It doesn't really affect me, and I don't care either way. Definitely not trying to rat on anyone or even complain, BUT... I've noticed, in the past couple weeks, people have started to get pretty loose with their language (at least Cincy posters have; I think it started with the mayoral election). If you guys want to keep up the language rules which have been pretty well kept in the time I've posted here, you're going to have to do a better job of nipping this problem in the bud. If you want to let the four-letters fly, by all means, let it go. I posted in this thread because it was the first one I saw where it sort of fit.
November 21, 201311 yr Let's at least use the magical asterisk so that workplace web blocks aren't triggered. We get some complaints that people can't view UrbanOhio at work because the language here will trigger office-based blocks. Thanks. We have automatic cuss filters on the scout.com Browns website, which led to interesting results. A Cincy linebacker named Dave Pollack had his name #ed out, but "Terry Tate, Office Linebacker"'s employer's name was not.
