Posted August 28, 201311 yr I'm looking for advice on the best way to organize my photo library. What do you use as a local client to organize? What cloud storage do you use to sync to? Etc.?
August 28, 201311 yr This is a great topic, and timely for me, as I've got about a year's worth of photos I haven't uploaded and now I don't know how to get caught up. I've been using Flickr, and using their uploading software from my computer, which lets me create groups / sets / tags right before I load the pics to the site. Plus, Flickr has the added advantage these days of overing 1TB in storage for free. Historically it worked ok, but I am the very definition of an amateur, so I'm interested in what my more esteemed colleagues have to say.
August 28, 201311 yr I am interested too. Currently our photos are a CF. I have 13 years worth of digital photos stored on my home PC w/external back up and various photo sharing sites. I am not sure how many gigs they are. Basically they are organized loosely by year and season or special event.
August 28, 201311 yr Glad this is a pain point for others too. I mean that in the best way. I have years of digital photos and scanned photos from the way back machine. To me I like to be able to use a taxonomy like: Year>Month>Event/Subject. Right now I do this by cresting a folder hierarchy with Windows folders to force Picasa to handle them this way. For example: 2012>August>My Wedding Using this, Picasa - for example - will organize the folders for me as long as the date tags are correct. The date tags are no problem for recent digital pics because they are date stamped. however, older digitals (that have been transferred from HDD to HDD over the years) and scans of prints have incorrect date stamps. In this case, Picasa will put them in chronological but it may not be in the expected spot on the folder list on the left. I wonder if I am missing something given that Picasa has the option to create "Albums". Am I handling my organization at the wrong level? (Using aptly named MS Explorer Folders) Should I just be importing and letting Picasa do heavy lifting? How is that best done? I am not married to Picasa. So many questions, but that should get it started.
