Posted October 5, 201311 yr Hey again, everyone! Here's pictures from the third day of my summer trip to the Windy City. This section consists of pictures from Navy Pier and from a bike ride I took along Lake Michigan into Lincoln Park and back, and then the second Tigers/White Sox game @ U.S. Cellular Field. Walking over the Chicago river... River East Entrance to Navy Pier, said to be the most popular tourist attraction in all of the Midwestern United States. It's like a fair/amusement park. Bob Newhart statue, unveiled by TV Land a few years ago in honour of "The Bob Newhart Show", which took place in Chicago. Lake Point Tower Chicago Children's Museum Pictures from in around Navy Pier before the crowds Looking towards Lake Michigan... Lake Michigan The Chicago Loop from Navy Pier Bike and Roll Chicago @ Navy Pier My weapon of choice... Getting ready for our trip, with some very nice ladies visiting from Liverpool, England, and Justin, our tour guide. The Lake was very choppy and it was brisk wind today, but made the ride a lot cooler! Now in Lincoln Park… just on the edge of the Gold Coast Abraham Lincoln statue Lincoln Park Conservatory Lincoln Park Zoo This seal finally stuck its nose out of the water... The Lion was sleeping in... The Jaguars were out, but the Tigers weren't It seems to want to do a fashion show and walk for us... Further along, encountered the Alfred Caldwell Lily Pool, a U.S. National Landmark, a prairie-school (made famous by FLW) landscape architecture project designed by Alfred Caldwell. It was made in 1889. Heading back towards Navy Pier... Back at Navy Pier... The World-Famous Billy Goat Tavern @ Navy Pier... As they call, a Cheezborger, Coke, and Cheeps… LOL! The famous Navy Pier Ferris Wheel Entrance to Navy Pier Park Views from the Ferris Wheel... Smith Museum of Stained Glass Windows Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. where I ate supper, It's based on the movie, "Forrest Gump" View of the city from where I sat… this was wonderful... Watermelon Margarita and a Shrimp platter… :D Bread pudding with ice cream for dessert… even better! From there… it was on back to U.S. Cellular Field for my second game between the Tigers and White Sox… this time from the Upper Deck.. Chicago skyline from the ball park… Upper Deck seats this time... Start of the game... Max Scherzer pitching… to Alejandro De Aza PRINCE! Tigers jump to a 1-0 lead in the second... Chicago skyline @ night from U.S. Cellular Field... Upper deck views of the park… this is from left field... Now from right field... Back to my seat... Tigers tie the game at 3! Max Scherzer being relieved... Jeremy Bonderman takes over... Extra innings now… a lot of the crowd left… in the 11th inning Phil Coke comes in relief... White Sox hit a single, good enough to drive in a run and win the game, 4-3 in extra innings… life has been tough for me, being a Detroit sports fan on the road... Fireworks after the win... U.S. Cellular Field after the game... Captured this shot of the Aon Center and the Blue Cross/Blue Shield building when I got back to my hotel after the game, courtesy of the CTA red line... October 6, 201311 yr Nice! I don't think I've ever seen Navy Pier that dead. Good thing you got to check it out though before the massive renovations begin. And yay! You saw a Sox game at a modern stadium with a team that's won a world series, not that dumpy antique up in Wrigleyville! haha, jk BTW, next time you ride bikes, buy an annual membership from the Chicago Department of Transportation. You get unlimited use to a city bike for one year for only $70. That's like twice the price of a Navy Pier bike for a few hours. I've considered ditching my own bicycle for the membership because it's so ridiculously cheap and you can write off the membership in federal taxes....so basically a free bike.

October 7, 201311 yr nice pics! those Chicago bikes look less dorky and conspicuous than the NY bikes--on which you're a riding billboard for Citibank! Oh no, the Chicago bikes are just like the Citi bikes in NY. They are TANKS! When I'm on one, I feel like I'm driving a hummer and can ride through walls and up steps. Then there's the bikes at Navy Pier or McDonald's bike pavilion which are normal kinds, but they are pricey. BTW Sox-35th has been closed as the southside Red Line has been shut down for total rebuild. I know the Sox were discounting tickets to make up for the inconvenience. But I just usually take the Green Line down there. Jaybird, did you take a red line shuttle from Chinatown or transfer at Roosevelt? I've been curious what visitors have thought of the systems shut downs. Chicago typically doesn't keep trains running during large construction projects. They just cut service, dispatch more buses and hope for the best until the work is done.
October 7, 201311 yr i love this style of thread because its like we are going along with you for the day so its very engaging. the thread is also a keeper for its variety and inspiration for things to do in chicago here. nice pics! those Chicago bikes look less dorky and conspicuous than the NY bikes--on which you're a riding billboard for Citibank! well the bikeshare bikes are made to be heavy and dorky everywhere so they dont get stolen. but if you dont like the ny version, then you could rent a 'bike and roll' bike instead. same company, same bike!

The second day, though, I was able to take the Red Line all the way down to 35th-Bronzeville-IIT, normally where the Green Line goes, at least until the Red Line rehabilitation is completed. Basically the Red Line took the same route as the Green Line.
