October 13, 201311 yr Nice pics - except for the bat. I *hate* bats. clevelandskyscrapers.com Cleveland Skyscrapers on Instagram
October 13, 201311 yr What's with all the dead trees in the Smokey Mountains? Are those reforested trees from the 1920s that are already at the end of their lives?
October 15, 201311 yr Those are balsam fir trees, dead because of the invasive Balsam Woolly Adelgld. You'll see something similar in large patches of Virginia, Kentucky, West Virginia and other states with similar pine stands - only those are mostly Hemlock Woolly Adelgld's attacking hemlock trees. The survival rate is just 20%. You'll see signs of infestation when the tops of the trees start dying or the shedding of the bark. -- I can't believe you did those Ohio and West Virginia cities in one day Chris... the Huntington Arcade is coming along nicely, as is the rehab of The Frederick (the interior is gorgeous) and the Keith-Albee Theatre.
October 15, 201311 yr Excellent! The Smokey Mountains are just gorgeous. It looks like Charleston has some pretty charming urban, tree lined streets too. Great thread!
October 16, 201311 yr Always had a thing for Charleston.....anytime I'm on 64 I always stop and walk around downtown! Great pics
October 16, 201311 yr Love the bat! I worked in Appalachia for four years. Can't say I'm in a hurry to ever get back there. But the place is filled with some great people.
October 16, 201311 yr so nice and such a great time of year to travel around there. wish i could get up to the catskills, it prime leaf viewing everywhere.
October 26, 201311 yr Ink looks grossed out in Portsmouth pic #4. Was it one of those days where Portsmouth smells like jizz? I don't remember that particular arcade in Huntington. Wait, doesn't Huntington have two historic arcades?
October 26, 201311 yr geez, I noticed that Natalie Cole played Huntington on Oct. 10. I guess her star has fallen from her peak of fame. Okay, that was a joke  Actually all these cities look pretty decent and well-maintained. http://www.mainstreetpainesville.org/
October 26, 201311 yr The sad thing is that Gatlinberg is the most pedestrian-friendly postwar settlement in The South.
October 28, 201311 yr Ink looks grossed out in Portsmouth pic #4. Was it one of those days where Portsmouth smells like jizz? I don't remember that particular arcade in Huntington. Wait, doesn't Huntington have two historic arcades? There's only one arcade that I know of in Huntington. October 31, 201311 yr Huntington also has the Lewis Arcade at 825 4th Avenue, although I can't remember if its accessible.
November 20, 201311 yr Charleston, WV is a real sleeper of a city. I'd put it up against small southern darlings like Charleston, SC or Savannah, GA, but obviously very different cultures and history. Charleston, West Virginia's downtown is one of the best of any city that size in the country. 50,000 people? It shouldn't be anywhere near that good... Portsmouth still looks pretty depressing, but thankfully it looks like it hasn't changed too much since I last saw it ten years ago. Did demolitions stop?
