Posted October 24, 201311 yr Groveport Town Center project moves forward with Ace Hardware as anchor tenant The city of Groveport will break ground this morning for a downtown redevelopment project that’s been a long time in the making. The Groveport Town Center project consists of a 10,000-square-foot Ace Hardware and a 7,500-square-foot speculative building for other retailers, office tenants and restaurant operators. I first reported on the then-village’s desire to redevelop the parcels in 2004. A couple of years later, the Pizzuti Solutions division of Pizzuti Cos. took a run at the redevelopment project. October 25, 201311 yr Oh man, there has been talk of this for many years. I lived in Groveport until I was 12. That reporter lived there too, down the street from me. Picture it, the year is 1984 and GCrites80s is 5. The reporter's older brother (or cousin, can't remember) and him show up to my house and the older one is doing that smoking fingers gag that you used to buy at the joke store. I'd never seen it before and start freaking out. Mom wasn't helping either by playing along. Brian was like 4 and also was in on it. It was a traumatic day.

October 25, 201311 yr Groveport gets a bad rep for things that are not actually Groveport. Places like the unremarkable Noe-Bixby area that is 5 miles away from actual Groveport and the Madison Mills area near Williams Rd. that is also Not Groveport. All that warehouse stuff near Rickenbacker and Lockbourne is also Not Groveport, really. Actual Groveport has a fascinating history going back to the mid-1800s and is definite UO material.
October 25, 201311 yr I will lead the both of you on a Groveport photo tour and you will walk off devastated.

March 9, 201510 yr OHIO AND ERIE CANAL REST STOP Deal will save Sharps Landing building BY ANDREW MILLER, THIS WEEK COMMUNITY NEWS Wednesday, March 4, 2015 - 10:04 PM A deal between NorthPoint Development and the Groveport Heritage and Preservation Society will save an original Ohio and Erie Canal building from being destroyed when warehouses are built on what was Sharps Landing. Groveport City Council approved a new warehouse project Feb. 23 at the corner of Rohr and Pontius roads. The site is part of Sharps Landing, which served as a rest stop for canal boatmen just west of the 1800s-era village of Groveport. The Ohio and Erie Canal has long since been replaced by streets, railroads and Rickenbacker International Airport, but an original historic home and low brick building remain on the property. NorthPoint Development will give the Groveport Heritage and Preservation Society $200,000 and two years to remove a low brick structure from the site of what was Sharps Landing. The Preservation Society hopes to reassemble the structure in Heritage Park. July 27, 20159 yr Group hopes to move canal-era building to Wirt Road BY ANDREW MILLER, THIS WEEK COMMUNITY NEWS Tuesday, June 16, 2015 - 10:32 AM Groveport City Council approved necessary zoning changes June 8 before donating city-owned property to the Groveport Heritage and Preservation Society for the relocation of an abandoned canal-era building. Council voted unanimously to approve ordinances granting the society variances from the current residential use zoning for two parcels at 536 Wirt Road. Members then agreed to give the parcels to the society and approved changes regarding setbacks, parking and landscaping issues to make way for the possible move of a low brick commercial building constructed in the 1800s for the Ohio and Erie Canal. A new warehouse development at the corner of Rohr and Pontius roads, approved Feb. 23, will be the end of the historic Sharps Landing property; however, a last-minute deal between the developer and the preservation society may have saved this one building. Groveport City Administrator Marsha Hall said the society intends to disassemble the building, brick by brick, then reassemble it on Wirt Road across from Heritage Park and the historic log cabin. October 29, 20159 yr Huge spec distribution center planned in Groveport By Brian R. Ball, Staff Reporter - Columbus Business First Updated: July 16, 2015, 11:37am EDT Financing help through the Columbus-Franklin County Finance Authority has cleared the way for a developer to build a 1 million-square-foot speculative distribution center in Groveport. Missouri-based NorthPoint Development worked a deal for the financing authority to sell $28.5 million in bonds to St. Louis-based lender Associated Bank so it could build the property on 67 acres it bought at Rohr and Pontius roads in late May. November 18, 20195 yr Canadian company to build distribution hub in Groveport A Canadian company has picked Groveport to expand its North American distribution enterprise. StarTech.com, which is based in Ontario, Canada, will build a 253,900-square-foot distribution facility on a 40-acre lot at 4450 S. Hamilton Road. The company is a manufacturer of IT connectivity parts including cables, hard drives, display and video adapters and A/V products. The new facility will allow the company to relocate 81 jobs and $2.59 million in payroll and create 30 new full-time equivalent jobs and $1.69 million in payroll in the next few years, according to documents from the state. It will be the company's third expansion in the city since it first leased about 48,000 square feet at Pizzuti Co.'s Creekside Industrial Center in 2011. StarTech has since then undergone three expansions that increased its local footprint to 200,000 square feet, with its U.S. presence now headquartered at 2000 Creekside Pkwy. in Lockbourne. https://www.bizjournals.com/columbus/news/2019/11/13/canadian-company-to-build-distribution-hub-in.html

It's already under construction. That is also a fairly old satellite view. To the north of that AEP building is a data center owned by AEP; which can be seen on Streetview. Groveport Madison High School is complete (and already too small...), the temporary/old buildings in front of it are gone, and there are ball fields along Hamilton Rd. On Groveport's 2020 docket are intersection improvements to that intersection where you have the address pin. It doesn't say though what those improvements will be. I wish they'd improve light timing at 33/Hamilton/Williams. I drive that every day, and yeah, it's a bad set up to begin with, but the light timing makes the traffic twice as bad as it should be in all directions. Edited November 18, 20195 yr by aderwent

January 13, 20205 yr It looks like the old run-down Eastland Golf and Family Fun Center is going to be redeveloped into some type of extended stay/apartment development. I believe the company behind this development is also currently building a 240 unit apartment complex in Reynoldsburg. It also appears that an Aldi grocery store will be built as part of this development. The below application was recently filed for the same parcel.
January 13, 20205 yr I used to hang out there all the time as a kid. It was the closest arcade to home.
September 6, 20204 yr The minigolf course and driving range above were demoed this week. Right now the clubhouse/arcade is still standing. Maybe it will be integrated into the extended stay development as an office, clubhouse or poolhouse (maybe all 3). There's a lot more grading to be done to get rid of the large mound of dirt that the minigolf course was on.

January 26, 20214 yr These buildings will really help improve Groveport's "downtown", so hopefully they can start construction sometime this year. Groveport has a solid residential core, but it is desperately lacking commercial space. These developments will help immensely. One of the buildings will be going here, at the corner of Front and Main, next to the Ace Hardware and across the street of the elementary school. The other is going here at the corner of College and Main where the old car lot used to be. This one is smack in the middle of Groveport, so it will be easily walkable for a majority of people who live in the village.
January 26, 20214 yr Tougher to wait until they're leased during a pandemic to start construction but it's still a fair principle.

March 31, 20214 yr Groveport's Main Street project moves forward despite councilman's concerns https://www.thisweeknews.com/story/news/local/canal-winchester/2021/03/19/groveports-main-street-project-moves-forward-despite-councilmans-concerns/4744136001/ Plans to transform Groveport’s Main Street corridor are moving forward, but one City Council member is questioning the project’s size and cost. Council voted 5-1 during its March 15 meeting in approving a contract for design-build services with Dayton-based Miller-Valentine Group to construct two buildings in an area where residents have long wanted to see new restaurants and retail. The project is known as 1847 Main, referring to the year two rival villages – Rarey’s Point and Wirt’s Grove, located on the Ohio and Erie Canal – incorporated to form what is now the city of Groveport. According to the building designs, one two-story structure at College and Main streets, called Wirt's Grove, would be more than 12,000 square feet, with five storefronts on the first floor and nearly 70 parking spaces. The second building at Front and Main streets, Rarey's Port, would be more than 14,000 square feet, with six storefronts. Parking would be available at the nearby municipal building. The price of the contract with the Miller-Valentine Group is $195,789 for the Rarey’s Port building and $200,136 for Wirt’s Grove. As part of the project, the city also is completing a comprehensive planning study for Main Street and the historic downtown area through the Groveport Community Improvement Corp., a not-for-profit organization whose mission is to enhance Groveport’s economic and community development efforts.
March 31, 20214 yr It hasn't been announced in the media (to my knowledge) how much money Groveport is getting from the stimulus bill, but whatever it is it will probably make than councilman's point moot. Groveport is quite down on restaurants and retail as compared to Canal and even Lithopolis. Sure we have supermarkets but that means we don't have anything else. And you can't really count anything north of 33 since that's in Columbus, you have to drive 2+ miles to it and the restaurants are all chains. We only have the one bar and it's Harley. Even so, it's still possible that these spaces will fill with insurance offices, dog groomers, chiropractors and more pizza.

I'm hopeful each building will get at least one decent tenant, whether that's a coffee shop or restaurant or bakery or whatever. As you said, there is a serious lack of non-chain restaurant options in Groveport. The town could easily sustain something like a Das Kaffee in Lithopolis or a Harvest Moon in Canal. I'm within walking distance of where each building will be built, so I would definitely be a regular customer at any half-decent coffee shop or restaurant.

I find it highly unlikely that such an inconsequential street would be named after the founder of one of the two towns which merged to form Groveport. Also note that Wert moved to Obetz, where he later died, after the towns merged, leaving the Rarey's as the powerful family. Furthermore, Wirt Road runs through what was originally Rarey's Port. Wert's Grove was further west around what is now College Street. It seems like a street named after Wert would be in the area that used to be Wert's Grove. My other, more humorous, theory is that the Rarey's sarcastically honored Wert by naming an inconsequential street on the edge of town after him, but misspelled his name on purpose. And now I know way too much Groveport history and I need to get back to my day job, lol.
