I feel like Car2Go's use of Smart Cars discouraged use on freeways. In Columbus freeways are an extremely important part of the road infrastructure -- moreso than other cities. Like say Dayton, where the arterials have synced traffic signals and it has an old outerbelt or Cincinnati where the arterials like Reading, Montgomery, Colerain and Columbia Parkway get you a lot of important places that the interstates just can't and move you around town almost as quickly if not faster.

Columbus adds a second car-sharing service

Car-sharing service Free2move launched in Columbus on Tuesday after parking the first 20 of an eventual 150 Jeep Renegades in the city's core the day before.

The service offering a range of rental options – running errands for 56 cents a minute to reserving a specific car for an entire month for $699 – joins Zipcar, which focuses on the Ohio State University campus.

Free2move arrives almost four years after Car2go left Columbus, saying it could not gain enough members after five years of trying. That service later merged with another and now operates only in Europe as ShareNow.

Rideshare Pick Up & Drop Off Zones Launch in Short North this Weekend

A pilot program launches Friday, July 15 designating rideshare pick up and drop off locations in the Short North.

A partnership between the City of Columbus, the Short North Alliance, Uber and Lyft, the program will create eight marked zones along High Street, bordered by Goodale Street to the south and Fourth Avenue to the north. The zones will be in effect from 10 p.m. – 3 a.m. Thursday through Saturday and utilize COTA bus stops not in service during those hours.

“The pilot program will present the opportunity to create a safer environment to manage rideshare use and traffic flow along High Street in the busy Short North,” said Jennifer L. Gallagher, Director of the Columbus Department of Public Service. “It offers another potential tool to support mobility options in our city and safely manage high curb demand.”

Just bring back the CBUS.

Columbus's long-time commitment to be anti-public transit is just dumb.

New Rideshare Service Wridz Launches in Columbus

A new rideshare service launched this week in Columbus with the goal of taking on Uber, Lyft and the many taxi companies operating in the region.

The Texas-based company, Wridz, claims that its business model offers a better experience for both drivers and passengers. Instead of a portion of every fare going to the company, drivers pay a set, monthly subscription fee, and in return get to pocket almost the entire fare for every ride they give.

Subscription fees for drivers vary by city but average around $100 a month, according to the Ride Share Guy website.

Columbus, specifically Short North is getting an on demand valet service. Rather than drivers making their way to parking on the street and garages, drivers now get to stop where they please while they swap out with a valet who will take their car and return it when they are ready. This is in addition to the dozen plus valet zones already in existence for evenings.

Just another thing to impede the flow of transit... well, whatever transit is left.

Free2Move Ends Car Sharing Service After One Year

Car-sharing service Free2Move has officially ended their original service plan in Central Ohio, just shy of one year after they expanded into this market.

“Customers feedback has shown that you need a longer-term solution than Car-sharing,” stated the company in an email sent out yesterday to customers. “And we have the solution! So we decided to adjust our offer for the citizen of Colombus (sic) and to propose exclusively Car on Demand, our all-inclusive month-to-month car subscription alternative, and consequently to end our Car-Sharing offer.”

One thing I noticed in my previous life as a bus commuter was how much worse the recent streetscape project had made the bus ride through the short north. Even on the "express" 102 it crawled through the neighborhood much worse after than before. Which is a shame, because the other aesthetic improvements and pedestrian experiences are much better now. But transit, especially commuter transit suffered a blow

Now the obvious answer is commuter traffic doesn't belong at surface level on our city's busy main commercial thoroughfare, but aside from a High St subway tunnel - how else can transit through the short north really be improved? I'm drawing a blank tbh

I suppose an El would be cheaper than a tunnel.

I was looking for a solution more realistic than a subway tunnel 😉

Jersey City NJ has been busy converting Newark Ave. into a pedestrian only promenade. A little higher density than Columbus, plus there's a PATH station at one end.

Wow. I was in Jersey City like 5 years ago, and they had just started (from what I could tell) pedestrianizing the area with makeshift barriers and paint. This looks great.
