I thought there was a thread on this already.  The title 'mayor' somewhat misleading since the Mayor is just one of the city commision.  This is not a "strong mayor" form of government one finds in other cities.

Dayton prepares to lick New Mayor

...the incumbent Gary Lietzell lost a three-way primary, and now the top two vote getters City Commissioner Nan Whaley vs County Auditor AJ Wagner face off for the title round.

Former mayors Rhine McLin and MIke Turner (now congressman) have endorsed AJ Wagner.  Interestingly McLin is a Democrat and Turner a Republican.

Nan is going to win this.  McLin and Turner aren't really that popular in the city.

I figure she has an in with the public employee unions, and thats a motivated voting bloc.

off-elections have low voter turnout, so candidates like Nan, with that kind of support, have the edge.

In any case it would be interesting to see a precinct level map or vote summary to see if there are any patterns developing in political geography...

Plus, she's talking about LRT, streetcars, more bike trails and bike lanes, so that helps her out with the more urban crowd.  If only Dayton had money...

Yeah...there is that hipster/yuppie/"urban pioneer" vote that Nan seems to be playing for, too.

AJ seems to be running a "neighborhoods" campaign.

Interestingly, Esrati was actually "winnowed in" during the primaries (instead of finishing behind the pack), so is actually running in the general election this time.

Congratulations to Nan Whaley!

Whaley wins Dayton mayor race, Williams and Mims to commission

Nan Whaley has won election as Dayton’s next mayor.

Whaley had 9,091 votes to A.J. Wagner’s 7,029, or 56 percent to 44 percent, with all precincts reporting Tuesday night from the Montgomery County Board of Elections.

The two candidates in the mayoral race expressed very different views of what the city needs.

Pretty much a status quo election for Dayton....

I am sort of disappointed in this due to AJ seemingly getting it about the decline out beyond the historic districts (and even whithin them, if you look at Hufffman).

Whaley vs. Turner

Congressman Turner: Dayton ‘doesn’t have resources’ to house illegal immigrant children

U.S. Rep. Mike Turner says Dayton doesn’t have the resources to address an influx of immigrant children.

Turner held a press conference Monday on the heels of Mayor Nan Whaley contacting officials at the Department of Health and Human Services to offer Dayton as a site for the relocation of immigrants crossing the border from Mexico. He was joined by Phil Plummer, Montgomery County Sheriff and State Rep. Michael Henne, R-Clay Township.

“The mayor is not in a position to take unilateral action,” Turner said.

...

OTOH...

...

Whaley's Response: “Today Congressman Turner attacked me via a letter to President Obama for cooperating with the federal government,” Whaley said. "Even though he himself voted for the law that made it easier for these children to come legally. Mr. Turner has been in office for 12 years and he’s failed to move immigration reform forward.”

Mayor Whaley: Immigrant children a humanitarian issue for Dayton

Dayton’s mayor and its congressman have continued to spar over Dayton potentially housing immigrant children.

Mayor Nan Whaley tells me she views the issue of immigrant children potentially being sheltered in Dayton as a humanitarian one, as U.S. Rep. Mike Turner, R-Dayton, held a press conference saying the area “doesn’t have the resources” to handle helping them. This comes after Whaley was contacted by federal officials about Dayton potentially serving as a site for the relocation of illegal immigrants crossing the southern border.
