Another element of the WSDOT project I mentioned a few posts above is the removal of the highway ramps that cut right through the wetlands of the Washington Park Arboretum. These highway ramps were originally going to be part of a larger project called the R. H. Thompson Expressway which was fortunately killed by public backlash/freeway revolts (you can see the unused stubs in the left photo).

In a move that was probably inspired by Portland's Lovejoy Columns, one set of columns will be left standing as a monument to the groups who blocked the construction of the highway:
